Interesting custom headlight / air scoops. Wonder how well the lights work. Also looks like distributor ignition?

I read Digit Power on the motor, and on the license plate.

License plate I can imagine, when the car is borrowed for an exhibition.
Putting your name on the motor seems unlikely, when you're not the company that made it.

So maybe those two senior AMG mechanics started Digit Power.
And were hired by Kicherer.

Since I’m somewhat of a fan of these kinds of historical puzzles, I can’t really pass this one by.

  1. It would be very interesting to see the original version of the (left) photo from the magazine — with license plates and any accompanying captions.
The photo looks familiar but I have a feeling that is from the pages of 2000-2015, for sure not from 1996.
UPD: this 'edited' image is actually from gdtm enthusiast very, very old website. That's the reason I have seen it before.

  2. The exhibition photo appears to be taken at a stand where Digit Power, for some reason, displayed this car. I may be mistaken, but it strongly resembles one of the halls at Palexpo during the Geneva Motor Show. The bonnet is open not so much to showcase a Digit Power product, but rather to draw attention to the wagon with a V12. Which, given the abundance of truly unique cars at the Geneva Motor Show, sounds like a rather doomed mission — especially in the context of what was, even at the time, an obviously dated Mercedes estate.
My assumption is that, for some reason, the owner or commissioner of the car (maybe even not informed Kicherer about it) lent it to Digit Power for display at the show. Possibly, Digit Power also used the opportunity to experiment with the ECU.

p.s. Another possibility: since Digit Power were quite actively involved in selling various performance cars, displaying this wagon at their stand may simply have been an attempt to sell it.
p.s.s. ...and I've just got another rumour tip: that the car at that time was sent by the owner to Digit Power to sort out some bugs and weird things

And here is an interesting list from Digit Power 2001:

  • all of the “current” tuning cars available for demo drives
  • all of the auto shows where the company was present in 2001
  • all the magazine articles

As you may notice, for some reason Digit Power was not ready to mention the megawagon under its own name in the magazines…

And it’s important to understand that the German tuning scene was full of these kinds of intricate overlaps and rebranding of showcars.

One only has to recall the case where a E46 M3 was built at Hartge, yet later presented as a Racing Dynamics product.
Or how Manhart much much later began publicly promoting itself as the technical team behind some of the most ambitious swap projects for… Hartge.

p.s. I would not be surprised to learn that the very same small team of talented V12 swap specialists was actually behind many of these W124 builds in the 1990s, later presented under brands like Brabus, Lotec, Väth or Kicherer.

And since each project helped them refine their craft and experience, the welds and sheet metal work in the engine bay inevitably turned out slightly different every time…

And to complicate things even further, let’s loop the discussion back to our earlier topics — with the same veteran players involved:

I indeed have a Fahrzeugbrief where an E31 Manhart 860i reads "Leistung gesteigert durch Hartge-Motor".
And also an E46 Racing Dynamics R50 Tornado with 5L V8 is in my archive. I didn't know this was Hartge motor too.

About Digit Power maybe having made the motor in the S124, I am corrected by Ian Kuah on fb.
This I answered him.

You are right. I was too much focused and derived on what I read here: 1994 and Ludwigsburg.
Image in #3.
I figured, this cannot be MKB. Afaik this was 1989 and Burgstall.

Since I saw Digit Power badged on the motor, I thought maybe they made it?

However, just recently I also heard about an SL72 owner that claims his motor is made by MKB.
With 7299 cm³ !!

Maybe MKB not only made the motor in the S124, but also was a subcontractor and motor developer for AMG?
Since I have seen an SL73 MKB with LH-Jetronic from 10/1994.
A sort of testcase for future AMG SL73?

The interior of the car in the magazine has indeed different wood, but the buttons are equal.
Besides the screen. But this might have been added later to replace the radio.

I like everything except the LARGE HOLES in the HEADLIGHTS!(n) I guess it’s great for RAM AIR but I could live w/ a few less HP.

Maybe change to the Diesel Cutouts in both front fenders instead.

525ps in a car with no traction control sounds like a Very Bad Idea.

Also, the speedometer in this car is not original. Consider it TMU (True Mileage Unknown). Speedo is from a vehicle with ASR, and that wagon does not have ASR.

From that article (in German) on post #14, below by @TimL, I understood that at least a mechanical LSD was installed on this S124 at the time of conversion.
I sure hope it has LSD! Preferably Torsen/ATB type (Quaife, Wavetrac) since the factory clutch-type LSD wears out the frictions, and they are NLA (not to mention a TON of work to replace).

Even with LSD, nothing will cut power when the rear end breaks loose, except the driver's foot. That's where ASR (or ESP) works magic.
