Rear headrests and sun shade

Hi,
I hadn't lowered my rear headrests for a long time so figured out that it was time to press the little button on the dashboard.
They didn't move... Wondered why until I realized that my rear sun shade was on and that there was a security on our cars : no headrests down with the sun shade on...So I retracted it and the rear headrests went down.
I moved them up and down few time with the rear sun shade down so as to work the mecanism a bit.
Then I deployed the rear sun shade and move my rear headrests up ; but when I tried to retract the rear sun shade, it didn't work. I checked the fuse (ok) and disconnected the battery for a while, but without any effect.
So now the rear headrests and the sun shade won't go down : well done boy !
Has anyone any idea of what's going on ?
Thanks in advance...
Alex

Well my sunshade was removed by PO. My rear headrests don't move either. I verified I have proper vacuum from under the seat, but did not remove seat back to inspect the units that actually actuate the headrests. I do have nos units ready to swap out if needed. So I shall watch with great interest your outcome. I was not aware of the safety issue, so perhaps electronically my system has a phantom thought of a fully extended sun shade that doesn't exist[emoji90]

I know my sunshade was not fully seated in when lowered and that triggered headrest not to go down with switch. I pressed shade into its housing and my headrests worked. Make aure shade is not stuck play with it because it shade is not fully in it will not let you lower headrests with switch

Great that you checked the #9 fuse (if you haven't already, you may want to swap the aluminum fuses for brass). Best to unseat and re-seat it to be sure. I'm also assuming the car was running when you were trying to raise/lower the headrests? The manifold vacuum needs the engine to be running.

Lastly, you may want to apply some Teflon lubricant to the track that the arms slide in at the top of the shade to make sure it goes all the way up (and down). If the shade is not all the way down (even if it looks like it is), the headrests will not release when you push the button.

Robert can you think of anything with respect to the movement when the shade is removed? I replaced all fuses when I got the car and it came to me without the sunshade.

Louis -

All I can think is logic is built in for when the shade is down all the way that a circuit is closed which allows the headrests to recline. The system checks to see if the circuit is broken (i.e. if the shade is not fully retracted *or* if the shade was removed without being fully retracted). If it is, then the only way to get the headrests to retract is to complete the circuit. My thought is that if this is the case, you'll have to complete the circuit using a shade -- even if it will never be deployed -- to get the headrests to move.

Robert

Im thinking a plug with wires that complete the circuit. Do you (or anyone reading this) know how many pin plug the shade connects to back there as I am sure the fabricators of my interior refurb left the wires in tact back there. I guess I need to remove the parcel shelf and have a look see when it isn't 120+F in the garage.

Hi,
My shade is completely deployed, meaning all the way up, and the headrests are locked in the upward position.
I don't understand why it doesn't work...
Alex

I know, I know, but the problem was that the sun shade didn't want to retract...
I say "didn't want to" because, today, it did after I "played" a bit with the headrests which were locked in he up position.
Dont' ask me why...
