Does anyone have 124-820-02-56, perhaps in their used parts hoard collecting dust or on a junked car .... that they want to get rid of?
I'd like to give you a few clams for it if you are willing to part with it. This is what it looks like. I want to conduct an experiment and hack up one of these to add a rear backup cam.

I could always go the ebay route but thought that I would "keep it on the board" first before going to ebay.
Thank you.

The experiment being to see if you can get the hole drilled without the plastic disintegrating?

Yes, more or less. Generally speaking I've observed that aftermarket backup cams meant to be installed on sedans have always been too ugly for my eye. They fall into two categories -
  • The "under lip" triangle form factor, which, for OEMs looks really nice and small, but the aftermarket makes 'em too ugly. See this as an example of the huge aftermarket triangle-type pimple that I installed on my w210. These typically protrude 1.25" or more below the horizontal mounting surface. This is because all of the electronics are housed below the mounting surface, and the threaded tube that projects above the mounting surface is just a channel to route the wiring.

  • The license-plate frame type, which I find too aftermarket looking for my tastes:

So I realized that you can now buy triangle backup cams that recess more of the electronics up above the mounting surface. This one protrudes only 2/3" below the mounting surface. However, since the part that projects up through the horizontal mounting surface is more than just a threaded tube, I need "meat" to hog out ... hence the desire to experiment with an old license plate light lens housing.

Yes, I knew they now had "flush mount" but also knew there was nothing I was going to drill out on any of my cars to make it fit. Which is why they were in the license plate frames to begin with. I thought briefly about butchering one of the "Go Blue" plate rings (see attached), but then just stopped because I don't need backup cam, and to have it "just because" isn't compelling for me. With your use of the W210 I'm totally tracking.

Carry on...
