Recovering Sunroof Lining

The sunroof lining is pretty complex. Two main pieces with lots of framework.

I would like to ask anyone that has had their sunroof recovered a question. Did you cover the existing material or remove it and replace with new cloth? I ask because the strips of plastic that are heat bonded to the fabric seem like they may be difficult to remove without damage.

The other option to cover over existing cloth seems like it might be too thick. In my experience these cars are limited in their tolerances.

Any advice or experience would be appreciated!
