Hey Folks, after putting this off for far too long, today is my last day at work, heading in shortly to clean up the office and say goodbye to everyone.

28 years ago today I started working at the airport as a temporary winter worker, plowing snow and manual labor in between storms.

I'm leaving as the airports COO, and it's been quite a ride... bittersweet to be leaving, but way past due.

Time for the younger folks to take over....

Now I can take a lot of time to tinker with the fleet.....

Anyway heading in to work for the last time in a few moments, here is whats left on my countdown clock just now.. Cheers

Congratulations! I imagine running an airport in the region you are in is very demanding. The aviation environment, much like the automotive, fosters great friendships I know you will want to keep alive. You may have to drop in from time to time to keep your replacement on track!

I'm not far behind you.

Man, what a story! Congrats, and enjoy!

Cheers, 🍻

Congratulations! I retired from full time practice on Dec 1st. I am through with all the dumb-ass bulls--t I had to deal with before. However, between SS, Medicare, and making sure my job pays me all they owe me, I have a new list of DABS items to deal with..... but I do enjoy sleeping as late as I want and spending time with my cars and my boat.

Good for you! I am about 3 years or so behind you. My exact date will depend on when and how much I sell one of my AMG collector cars for. I love my AMGs, but I want to retire as soon as comfortably possible. I greatly look forward to 10 years of health and energy and doing whatever the hell I want to do before my body starts to give out. I owe that to myself after a good, prosperous career.

Congrats! on your retirement. I’m sure it been long anticipated and deserved. It now time to get on with life and do all of those “I’ll get to it next year put offs”

You will miss the rat race at first but eventually that will dissipate and you can get on with enjoying your new life, maybe travel, hobbies or whatever you want to be involved in. Especially, more time with your E500Es

Here’s wishing you the best for the future!

Good Luck:wahoo:

Totally agreed! It took a few years to stop missing the rat race and start viewing “rat race” / “career” = someone/something else purchasing and monopolizing the best years of one’s life. The faster one can stop missing the rat race, the better!

Thank you everyone for your kind words of encouragement, and well wishes!

Oddly enough, many people I know, (who are close to retirement themselves), have been poking me for a while about not retiring earlier, and now that I have, the same characters are saying, "What are you going to do now", with a tone emplying I'm making a mistake.. too funny

There's a "Back Building" on our property that was previously a cabinet makers work shop, it's good sized at 24' x 38' I believe, (high ceilings, completely open inside, and no walls or posts). Unfortunately over the years it's turned into a storage building that's packed full of stuff that needs to get sorted, cataloged, sold, and/or trashed. I can't find anything in there anymore. I've put my daughters on notice, to get all their stuff out of there, once spring gets here the tossing begins.... The plan is to turn it into a decent work shop, with a new garage door to give access to the fleet, and the various other pieces of equipment I have. Perhaps a lift if there's enough ceiling height, ( I think it's about 12 to 13', I need to measure it). Also I'll wall off a man cave in one of the corners, etc. with conditioned air, beer fridge, etc. That will take care of the MB interests for now, all car acquisitions will stop unless there's a swap of some sorts, and I'll most likely trim the fleet down over time anyway. The lure of a large disposable income kept me in the game too long, so now that retirement is here, the luxury of buying things I can do without is over. There is some wiggle room left, but that money needs to really get prioritized now. Amazon and others will start wondering what happened to me....lol

The wife and I were boaters for years. We were boaters before MB lovers, belonging to a local yacht club and had a nice sized fly-bridge cruiser for years. We lost that boat to hurricane damage years ago, and never got around to replacing it. I still belong to the yacht club, located on the Hudson River, about 65 miles north of NYC, Nice big open water with access south to the Atlantic of course, and also to the Erie and Champlain canals to the north, which can take you to the St. Lawrence Seaway, or the Great lakes and beyond. Now being retired, both of us are interested again, so Boat shopping will start as we get closer to spring. One of my old dreams was making the "Grand Loop", which a few of the club members have done. Head north up the Hudson River till you get to Albany, jump on the Erie Canal which starts/ends there. Head west on the canal until you hit the great lakes, then other canals until you get into the Mississippi River. Down the Mississippi to the Gulf of Mexico, then head east on the Gulf to the Ft Meyers area of Florida. Jump into the Okeechobee waterway, (canal), which runs across Florida to the Atlantic, coming out at Port St. Lucie I think. Then take the inland waterway north up the east coast and back into the Hudson river where it meets the Atlantic in NY Bay. Doing that will require a nice sized live aboard boat, probably a trawler type with an economical diesel motor, a gen-set, for elec. and hot water when not at a dock with power. Boat shopping is as fun as MB shopping... :)

If the COVID thing ever lightens up, we love to travel, (not just boating), and our oldest daughter who lives in Perth, AU is getting remarried this year (we think, COVID delays). Her fiance is from Northern Italy, with his family owning a BnB in the mountains north of Milan, near Como I think. So we're reserving time and money for a trip to Italy if it happens. Maybe stay longer and explore Switzerland as well, we'll see...

Beyond that I'm and avid gun collector, and belong to a 2000 acre private hunting preserve near the original Woodstock concert site near Bethel,
NY. I'm also a long time fly fisherman, once spending a lot of trout fishing time in the Catskills of NY, now it's Alaska in Aug. for the Coho Salmon runs. Ice fishing, cross country skiing, camping have filled my time in the past as well, but work has kept me from many of those things for a while.

Anyway, for those folks asking me, "what are you going to do now?", I just give them a smile and tell them I'll figure it out, I won't be bored at all.

Anyway, thanks again for all the warm wishes.... It's Time for fun and games.......Cheers...

Excellent plan. If your shop ceiling is 12' or more, you can put in a full-height lift. Entry-level 2-post, 9000-pb lifts will be around $4k plus installation. It is worth every penny. I have a Direct Lift 9D installed in 2011. Get the type without a floor plate, it's in the way for rolling anything underneath (trans jack, etc).

About the "what are you going to do now?" question, keep this in mind:

Nobody, ever, on their deathbed has said: "Gee, I sure wish I had spent more time at the office!"

:yahoo:

That "Grand Loop" is appropriately named! What's that, about 2 or 3 weeks? And when would you do it, early summer after de-icing and before hurricane season? I've driven a smaller version of that loop too many times...😉 Jokes

@Jlaa I never for one second missed the rat race... I started sleeping with no alarm clock, and recognized how much of a loner I actually am... of course I still work, but on my own terms, and after I finish sleeping. Sleep is right up there next to water and sunshine in my book.

I believe 2 of the members did it in 6 or 7 months, the 3rd wintered over in Florida with friends, I think he took about a year. This trip isn't about the destination, it's the travel itself, taken at a pace that lets you smell the roses. Hence a trawler with a diesel engine is my wish, not fast to begin with... and trying to make a marina every night if possible....

Congratulations! How has the first couple weeks been?

Was chatting with my boss yesterday. We’ve known each other about 12 years and get on pretty well.

He’s got 18 or so years on me and is giving up the rat race later this year so he has been pondering all the things he can now ‘get up to’ without having to worry about the 9 to 5, or rather 6 to 8 as it routinely is for us…..

It’s great to hear of all your plans, and best wishes for them. Having to ever question yourself as to how you’ll occupy your time must be a nightmare, but it seems to be a question many people unfortunately face.

Thanks Ed, It's funny, in the past two weeks I haven't had the time to start anything I have on my list, in fact local family needs have actually added to the list. Our mother who is in her 90's, although fairly healthy, has needed more than normal attention. Today is the 4th doctor visit in the last two weeks. Then the wax seal on her toilet started to drip a little last night, that's added to the list, My wife has needed help getting to a doctor herself twice, and the biggest time eater is my Aunt and Uncle. They are moving to Maine in 3 weeks, and have needed help cleaning out their house, wow what a huge clutter, and I'm over there every day helping to sort, box, clean, trash stuff, and they have given me a bunch of stuff which I can't refuse, but no place to put stuff myself. Now we have a potential Nor'easter storm headed our way on Friday-Saturday which could drop a few inches or maybe a foot of snow. Last night Mom called to say her email stopped working, OK another thing before I can begin on my stuff. Goes on..
It's funny, retired friends have said to me they don't know how they found time to get anything done while they were working, I kinda agree for now... OK, time for coffee and make a to do list for today...... lol.....Thanks again...

And then they stop working, and they figure out that they actually hadn't gotten anything done while they were working, and all those "other" things are still piled up waiting for them to do... sounds like you're beginning to relate. But (and here's the important part), they're much happier doing those things than what they were doing at work. And with that part I can definitely relate.. and so will you. It's all just more fun when you set the priorities and can take care of and spend time with those you love.
