- changed front brake pads - Akebono EUR561 from Amazon for $52 (note these only come with two brake pad sensors, you need 4 total for the fronts, I salvaged two good one from my current set)

- rotors measured at > 29mm with my RotoCal (bought from Klink, love this measurement device).

I have a knocking in my front suspension when I wiggle the steering wheel left / right. Thought I screwed up the Idler Arm Bushing replacement but couldn't understand how. Turns it its my drag link left side ball joint is loose in its socket and will knock when you grab a tire and shake it back and forth. Relieved I didn't screw up the Idler arm thing but just finished buying the rest of my front suspension refurb parts.

I had a similar sound but it wasn’t structural - it was improper re-attachment of the cover on the left tie-rod end.

- removed and replaced all 4 brake lines with Deerfield Precision Stainless ones

- flushed brake fluid after with MB Fluid, only the finest for my car. I wonder what generic manufacturer makes this stuff. Use Gerry's brake fluid HOW-TO.

Power steering pump is leaking! I did the reservoir fix earlier but its time to replace the pump. Declined power steering pump replacement with Bosch remanufactured unit, quote was $1800 total including labor.

I have a ZF pump in the car and will proceed to try and remove and rebuild the pump myself.

I think the reseal kits are NLA on these pumps now... let us know if you run into problem sourcing the kit.

Which fluid is leaking, SLS fluid or P/S fluid? Can you tell where the leak is coming from on the pump?

Yikes! I hope they are not NLA. I just placed an order for the ZF kit form mboemparts. I will see what happens.

Ricardo, the most common leak is the front shaft seal, which will leak SLS fluid (not P/S). Unfortunately that seal is not sold separately, although it may be possible to source one based on the dimensions.

Hope I'm wrong about the seal kit, btw!

:wormhole:

Talk to Dave's Uncle Kent Bergsma -- he may have some sort of rebuild kit as part of his bevy of repair kits. :joke:

It does appear that the ZF kit is NLA from MB; though the LUK reseal kit for the Vickers branded pumps is still available from MB.

There may be some options available to try to buy:

Amazon.com: SWAG Hydraulic Pump Gasket Set Fits MERCEDES W210 W140 W124 C140 0004603780: Automotive

Power Steering Pump Seal Kit 0004603780 - Febi Bilstein - Mercedes-Benz - 000-460-37-80 | Pelican Parts

Mercedes A 0004603780 Power Steering Pump Seal Kit

Most parts places seem to be saying that it is currently back-ordered, with no ETA.

That what I've seen too - backorder everywhere, no ETA. If we could find a similar tandem pump with the same diameter shaft, there MAY be another p/n out there that could work. Maybe. But I doubt it.

AFAIK, Jono is replacing the entire pump with rebuilt units until the seal kits are available again (or, until new site sponsor owner Uro releases a kit).

:hornets:

The pelican Febi kit is out of stock. Found one on eBay from Bulgaria and taking a shot that it is the real deal for $30 (see photo below). I also ordered the Amazon one you found Gerry. Thanks. ( Also ordered the clip which was easier to find). If both look good I have one for my parts stash! Now on the to rest of the parts for this job.

ZF rebuild kit is 000-460-37-80 and snap ring 002-994-26-35

Ricardo,

If you do end up getting two kits, and have an extra, I'll be happy to take the extra kit off of your hands for my deep parts stock.

Gerry,

I am working on a garage clean-up project and setup outdoor storage for non-valuable items to clear up inside storage for my parts stash.

But I think my stash will be 1/100 of yours. At least I have a pair of 1994 E500 USA headlights and 1 extra left one.

Resealed the power steering pump reservoir and changed out hose again per my How-To
https://www.500eboard.co/forums/ind...-reseal-power-steering-fluid-reservoir.10965/

2nd time was easier but on a scale of 0 to 10 this one is sucks balls. Anyway its done and now I can hope my so called need to rebuild my ZF pump is just a leak in the reservoir area again. I changed to these new style clamps on the left for the little hose. Originals on the right.

Also my ZF rebuild kit did arrive from Belgium finally! And still waiting on my one from Amazon so I may end up with a spare to help someone else down the road. These are NLA as of this posting.

Sooo Ricardo,

The clamp on the right looks like a Pep Boys purchase and NOT original. Where did you purchase the new clamp on the left? It looks German and of much better quality.

PS: I would be happy to take the extra ZF repair kit off of your hands if you want to sell it.

lol

MB uses both style of clamps, for different applications... and some of the original sizes used back in the early 90's are NLA and have been replaced by other clamps with a wider range of allowed diameters. Most of the time, the original clamps can be re-used if they are not damaged or badly distorted.

- oil change, Redline 10W40 + Mahle oil filter , ~6k mile oil change interval
(about ~ 5k miles every 6 months with my current driving habits, 16k since the engine came out).
- also replaced the fuel pressure regulator as preventative maintenance with a Bosch unit 0280160587. Looked to be the original still in the car.

Ricardo,

You have done an amazing job w/ your car. Using your car as a DD requires a lot more attention to maintenance. I just spent my morning reviewing all of your posts from day one. Your proactive approach should keep you going for a long time.

One issue you bought up that you missed was documenting your engine out timing chain work by Max and Nick at 164K miles. You put it in out of sequence with no pics. If I remember correctly, you did post more info on that work w/ a few pics. It must be in the 119 engine threads.

If you want to and can find the thread I’ll bet that Gerry could copy it into your Owners thread to help complete your documentation.

Keep up the good work

lol

Thanks Terry, my car is running great. I think Blower Motor is my next project but my current one still seems to be running fine. I finally have a DC AMP meter to check out the current draw to the blower motor but I keep forgetting to check. My timing chain engine out pictures are somewhere on this board.

Things are pretty quiet. Hardly driving car at all since March 2020 shelter in place started. I let my wife take the car out and as usual something goes wrong. Check Engine light went on which in our cars is RED, meaning you have a serious problem. Really it should be amber. So this freaked my wife out knowing that RED lights are bad. I was able to clear it up for her after a quick phone call.

Finally got around to checking it and its the EGR valve code 5 (5 blinks on the DM module LED). Looks like I had this problem in 2016
Check Engine Light - DM code 5 - EGR valve | M119 Engine and it was a broken hose connection.

For now, I just reset the light and next time I take the car out see if comes back and dive into a bit more.

P.S. More horrifically I asked my wife how she liked and she said the dreaded words "grandpa mobile" Paid for grandpa mobile I corrected her. Nobody love this car but me.

Likely it’s a broken vacuum line from the passenger fender well (behind headlight) to the EGR valve. I had same and fixed it with my recent top end job.

😭😱. FWIW my 12 year old prefers the 500E over the Sport Beetle. She says the Sport Beetle is too stiff, gives her a headache, and that the 500E draws more attention which she enjoys. Must be the color ......

3/7/2021 @ 188,628 miles, Check Engine light on due to EGR Code

- examined area around EGR valve and noted broken elbow connector 117 078 02 81 (see photo)
- replaced with some vacuum tubing I had on hand, need to order more elbows
- clear code on DM module 19

Interesting, during the COVID-19 quarantine year, I put on about 1,200 miles. And my son has done about half of that as he is now driving "the brick" part time as he calls it.

Nothing to report, car just hit 190k miles, thanks to my son driving it a bit more but now he is back off to college

(oh, I just remembered, I changed the front windshield wiper blade, with an OEM part of course).

One more year I think to 200k miles.

Nice work, Ricardo! FYI... put the new tires on the rear of the car. The rears wear faster. This should help even out the wear on the set of 4.

Also, if the new battery is not AGM, definitely run a vent tube from the battery out the side vent flaps.
