Extraction rules! I run the car until oil is hot and flowing nicely and then suck it out of the dipstick tube. I also suck oil out of the oil filter canister.
Ricardo, do you change the filter first, before sucking out the sump?

Also, what extraction device do you use?

:apl:

I remove the filter first then do the extraction from the sump. Then suck out any oil in the filter can. Replace filter and pour in new oil. I think I follow a gxsr procedure for this printed out years ago. I refer to that print out every time. It tells me how much oil to pour back in…

I use a miTy vac that is powered off my compressed air hose. The excess oil gets dumped into the local endangered species frog pond.

Are you still planning to move on to something else after having hit the 200k milestone?

I seem to remember that you had mentioned that you didn’t think you would keep your car beyond the 200k milestone, but maybe I fot that wrong. In either case, I hope you keep your 500 E!

Yes, I hit my daily driver milestone of 200k miles. I need to retire this car from daily driving. Time for someone else to turn it into a show car Sunday driver. All the mechanical bits are done.

Ricardo, why the early retirement? And what's the planned replacement?

:nobmw:

I am ready to start daily driving something else, and with the NLA situation growing, feel it is best to only Sunday drive this car. But I don't have the car storage (why can't a man have a 6 car pole barn on his property?) so I think a new owner could potential finish the car. Take care of the little cosmetic details: refinish the wood trim, perhaps respray the front/rear bumpers/rocker panels, and get a top class paint correction/ceramic coat. (oh, and never got to my project to have Augmented Wheels make 18" stock wheels like those Rials). Then do what Jlaa does and start making tiny cosmetic improvements in the engine bay and underneath.

2018-2021 S-class coupe is my intended replacement at the moment. Big GT cruiser for long distance road trip vacations.

I just submitted my car to Bring-a-Trailer , hope they accept my submission....

and in the process I realized I forgot to document two major Ricardo & @Jlaa projects.

1)the HVAC blower motor and regulator change which made a huge difference in HVAC performance May 2022

2) the windshield wiper mechanism removal and repair, also a May 2022 event

My E500 died on me today after sitting for too long. Used my State Farm app to get an emergency tow. While waiting for the tow truck the car started again (about an hour later). Killed by moisture in the distributor caps. Rotor and caps were last changed in 2002, at 92k miles. New Bosch ones on order. Fun times. I am getting punished for not using this car as a daily driver.

That's a bummer. Make sure you get factory parts (made by Beru) and also make sure you get new Bosch insulators behind the caps and rotors. Check your cam seals, though I am sure they are fine given you had all of the work done on the engine a few years back.

- left & right cam seals replaced (Victor Reinz) Added to the How-To here: HOW-TO: Replacing M119 distributor caps & rotors | "HOW-TO" Tutorial Articles
- left and right caps & rotors & rotor to insulator O-rings changed to Bosch (over 100k miles on these parts from my records)

My E500 is running SUPER STRONG again!!

You don't want to see this (Right side of Engine)

New seal after learning how to install them with a makeshift tool.

A little shrinkage, I bet that fossil came out in pieces.... mine sure did.
We had such an annoying / frustrating time getting out the 2 seals in @RicardoD 's car ---- and then getting out the 2 Elring seals which we had freshly installed but buggered up by folding over the inner lip ---- that I immediately went home and decided that I needed SIX seals for my own car for the future when I tackle this job. 🤣
