Running Hot?

Hello,

I am helping someone purchase a car. We went to look at one yesterday, I noticed it was creeping up to 110c with the A/C on and idling for a while. Once driven it would come back down to normal operating temps. Should this be of any major concern? I know my C36 hits 100c then the fans kick on and it drops back down when it has been idling in hot weather. There was also a spot of rust above the plastic trim on the trunk-lid, if there is rust here is it safe to assume there is more elsewhere? Car had 128k miles. Lived 90% of its life in Illinois. Looked nice to me overall. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks.

110C is higher than it should be unless ambient temps were extreme (over 100F). This shouldn't be a deal-breaker, just something else that will need to be fixed post-purchase. The electric fans should have been running on high by 107C so that would be the first item to check.

If you spot rust anywhere, it's almost guaranteed there will be more that is not as easily seen. The question is how much. Best to get the car on a lift for a better inspection underneath.

Thanks GSXR, can you please confirm what temp the fans should kick on? They come on around 100c on my MB. Thanks.

The electric fans turn on low speed based on refrigerant pressure only, regardless of engine temp.

The electric fans turn on high speed at 107C coolant temp, with everything factory/stock.

If you have a "cool harness" modification, the fans may turn on high speed between 90-100C, depending on the exact resistor which was installed.
