Silver Arrow Brakes

Blasting & painting calipers is a different story than spraying cars. It might be a better result at a paint shop than hoemeade - supposed it is done correctly using correct primer and paint. You sould take out the internals to save the dust caps during blasting, and plug all holes with blind plugs to avoid grit residues from the blasting inside. You must really ensure that the shop has understood what they are going to do.

:watchdrama: Arnt is absolutely correct. Blasting calipers (regardless of the blasting media used) is invasive unless all the previously stated precautions are taken. The brake calipers' function & your life depend on it.

Regarding paint...several manufacturers produce paint specifically for brake calipers to withstand the hostile atmosphere (heat, brake dust, environmental exposure & fluid) calipers are exposed to.

If painting the calipers, make sure you or the shop uses this specially formulated paint.
 
ok so they have to be clearanced to the caliper not for the diameter of the rotor?
It depends on the build date of the car. The rear dust shields are smaller diameter through early 1993 model year production and need to be trimmed for diameter of the rotor. From mid-1993 model year up, larger shields were installed that accomodate the 300mm rotor without any mods needed. No modification to the caliper cutout area is needed though.

Thank you guys for your opinion. I agree with you , so decided to wet sand them and put a clear coat on them :hornets:I coated them today night and left them to dry out . Looks nice and shiny :banana2:
 
I received my shipment from Classic center yesterday. I used the part no. in Steves post below (129 423 0512) but received 275mm rotors rather than the rear 300mm drilled rotors. That no. is on the rotor. Can anyone (help Dave!) shed some light on where the problem lies please?

edit; I just looked in Daves brake pdf file and the number above is what's listed.

Hmmm...look like gen-u-whine MB labels and parts (only the MB rotors have the gray paint on them).

That is a mis-labeled rotor. The rotor itself should have a part number stamped into the metal if you look carefully on the hub area, and also the outer edge (I forget exactly where it is located).

Warehouse screwup - d'oh!

Yes. Found it along the outer circumference of the hub area. VERY hard to see but clearly says A 1684210612. Mercedes star both ends. Also EGA3R 280 312 M. Dimensions are 276mm x 22mm. Thank you.

Is there a DIY thread for this upgrade?

I think it is very straight forward and super easy to install so there is no HOW TO thread but I might be not right.

As long as you have later style LCA the only hard thing will be to to take off bearing to replace shields.

I don't think we had a how to thread (unless Dave has it documented somewhere), but a lot of info is listed in this thread. For a DIY job, if you have the smaller [rear] dust shields, you need to cut them so that's one DIY job. If your LCA are the early ones, installing the later LCA's is other DIY job, for which a spring compressor is preferred and we had one or more Klann compressor's for sales here. You should mark the LCA's bolts location for easier remounting and keeping within the alignment specs before you head off for a new alignment.

On top of that:

1. Install SS lines.
2. Install new rotors - might have to knock out one of the extra pins, so the back of the rotor can be seated flush.
3. Install new calipers - unless you need to paint them, a rebuild set (if going with a rebuild vs. new) should not require replacing the seals which means they go on as is. If paint is in order, how good of painter are you and are you willing to tear the calipers apart yourself, paint them properly and reassemble?
4. Install new brake pads and sensors.
5. Re-bleed the new brake fluid (try to shoot for 29psi).

Concur - Zimmerman rotors are excellent. I have drilled Zimms on my 560SEL. I am also going to put new ones on my wife's E320 wagon very soon.
 
Gents, a couple questions please

I have a pair of s600 calipers from a 2001 s600. They are black in color, not silver. They are brembo calipers, and the rotors say they are 300mm

Do all versions of that period of Brembo calipers fit under EVO 2 wheels?
Is there a big difference in stopping power or bolt pattern, between the Silver Arrow calipers, and w220 chassis, S600 V12 calipers?

Would these calipers bolt up to my 1991 300e? (sorry guys, I don't have a 500e!)

If they bolt up, and they fit under EVO 2 wheels, and they're almost as good as authentic Silver Arrow calipers, I may have just scored!

W220 calipers do not bolt up to the W124.

Weird that they're both from the same era and generation and the bolt patterns are different
Would have been sweet though, since SL's of that era are few and far-between at junkyards, and w220's are a dime a dozen
 
The 201, 124, and 129 have similar front axle geometry concepts. The 220 is the first MB iteration of the variable steering axis geometry pioneered and patented by BMW. Yes, it hurt to say that. So, as far as mounting position differences required due to wheel and hub offsets, etc. etc. they are considerably different. That’s why there is virtually no compatibility between the 220 and the prior vehicles for front axle and brake components .

8.25" wide EVO wheels, yes.

7.5" wide EVO wheels, no. (Or at least, not without thick spacers, 15-20mm or so.)

Do the SA Calipers Fit Standart w124s with LCA and Steering Knuckle like a1243300420? And not like a1293300220..

The steering knuckle is not the issue, the LCA is. What year/model are you asking about?

Ok... so there is no big difference between the w124 and r129 steering knuckle?
Here specially about ´95 E320T with the LCA.. but if you maybe take an 300E, change the to LCA and they will fit too??

The R129 knuckle uses larger bearings, but the external dimensions are the same.

95 E320 (with M104) will have the late LCA's and the big brakes bolt up no problem.

The 300E (with M103) will have early LCA's, and should have late (OE) LCA's installed to make everything clear nicely.
