Today, we had a site outage of several hours. This was due to an issue with the hoster's servers. I had two phone calls with technical support at the hoster (international phone calls, as I'm currently in Sydney, Australia) and they indicated that the site traffic exceeded the limitations that my hosting package provides.
I'm going to watch this carefully, and I already have a remedy in the works if this condition continues to persist. I am not totally convinced that the site traffic is actually exceeding the limits (which is 50,000 hits per day).
Bottom line ... if the site goes down for more than a full day, then I am going to initiate "Plan B" which I have waiting in the wings. This plan is a virtual server platform that I have already bought and paid for. What I will have to do, during the downtime, is transfer all vBulletin forum files (images, site code, and database) to the new server, change some settings, forward the 500Eboard.com domain to the new domain on the new server (which would be very temporary until the 500Eboard domain gets transferred to the new server), and bring the site back up.
While not an extremely difficult process, it is tedious and requires some technical proficiency. However, it's something I can easily handle.
Bottom line, is that if the site continues to go down, please rest assured that I "am on top of the situation" and will remedy the situation as quickly as humanely possible. As I'll continue to be on the road for much of August, I'll carry all information and needed tools to perform a possible site server switch with me, so I can do the work at night while traveling.
Please be patient if the site goes down ... don't wig, go postal, or otherwise freak out. We'll get it fixed. The good thing is that I have recent database backups and copies of all files, so we shouldn't have problems with losing any information. And of course, a move to a new server will include a dump of the current database. Effectively, no one should notice any problems after the domain transfers to the new site.
Again, this is describing a worst-case/nightmare situation ONLY. Hopefully things will settle down and the site will continue as it has with no issues.
My apologies for the downtime, which seemed to last around 4-5 hours.
Happy 500E-ing !!
Cheers from the Land Down Under !
