Offered for sale is my 1992 500E.

VIN = WDBEA36E8NB522215

I've owned it since March 2001. Purchased from the collection of gentleman racer/turkey farmer Jim Matthews, with 139k at that time. It has been a daily driver forever, but recently I inherited another car. I no longer have garage space for the 500E and it's simply time to move on. I am advertising it only on this board because, more than anything else, I want it to go to a good home. Whether it stays on the road, becomes a project, or is parted out, is for the buyer to decide. It has served me and my family so well that it deserves to be handled with the respect that this community will afford it.

It drives well, and better if it is used every day. Recent maintenance items include new rotors/pads, trans pan gasket, an upper rad hose, and rear sway bar links in May, 2015; rear tires in Feb, 2015; a new blower assembly in Jan, 2016; new starter in Nov, 2015, and a new muffler in October 2015. For years, this car was maintained by Karl and Manfred Merkle in Indianapolis; both brothers are now retired, another reason for it to move on to a DIYer or someone with dependable help.

The photos show the car's issues, which are obvious and plentiful. The bent front bumper occurred some years ago when the car was on loan to one of my sons at IU in Bloomington. The interior is worn, as shown. The AC has slow but persistent leak(s), but it cools well enough when charged. A charge lasts for most of an Indiana AC season. If it seems low in the rear, that's because the SLS system was disabled years ago, when Karl/Manfred advised switching to conventional rear dampers rather than repairing the SLS.

I don't really have a price in mind, so please submit any questions/offers. The buyer (or for that matter, any board member) is welcome to a private tour of the Indianapolis shop of Chip Ganassi Racing, where I work (and where the photos were taken). From this shop, we run 4 IndyCars, including that of current champion Scott Dixon. We also run the factory Ford GT program from here, just back from winning the 24 hours of Lemans on the 50th anniversary of Ford's historic 1966 triumph. Most car guys find the shop irresistible, as do I.

maybe that pearl gray translates into 199 :teufel:

Nope, I checked the VIN / datacard, it's 122.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Gray/Gray, 281kmi (Indianapolis area, Indiana)

I talked with Jim Matthews about this very same car a time or two in the mid/late 90s, definitely at Sebring and possibly Daytona, too...

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Gray/Gray, 281kmi (Indianapolis area, Indiana)

I wanna come buy it just for the shop tour!! Not only the Indy cars, but would LOVE to see the Ford GT's! Fresh from a win at the Glen this past weekend too.....

I hope someone decides to save it.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Gray/Gray, 281kmi (Indianapolis area, Indiana)

Update: In consideration of potential buyers who are far from Indy, the car has received an ignition tune up. New rotors (with adapters), caps, and plugs. I probably overpaid (my shop uses MB factory parts) for the work at $1k. But the car is ready for cross-country travel, and that first inch or so of throttle pedal still puts a smile on your face. It may look a little rough, but for an introduction to these cars, it is a solid and reliable driver. I think it would be well-bought at $4250 or so, please let me know what you think. Thanks.

The price is reasonable considering the miles & condition. I think I'm glad it isn't closer to me or it might follow me home!!

Pretty sure this will sell fast at that price.

How hasn't it been bought? I'd buy tomorrow if I was closer.

Always have been a fan of Mercedes Brilliant Silver (I think it is the best silver on any car) but I have to say the Pearl Gray looks good in the photos.

Love the color. Anthracite? Too bad about the cancer. Great donor / big bodywork project.

Anthracite Grey is code 172, that is a different color - much darker, more like a light charcoal.

Pearl Grey code 122 is more like a dark silver.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Gray/Gray, 281kmi, $4250 (Indianapolis area, Indiana)

I think it's safe to report that Bruce and I made a deal, a great deal for us both! I drove the car from Indy to Nashville with no problems, only topping off the transmission fluid in Louisville. As luck would have it, I popped a small hole on a radiator hose Sunday while double checking my trans fix. Quick changes will include the fuse swap (get rid of the old aluminum ones) and change out the other leaf style fuses. I still don't have a 'permanent plan' for old Rusty just yet, I'll keep y'all posted. On the way back I realized I own three silver 124's!

Let's update the update. I sold this car earlier this year. It is now on the west coast and being used to revive other 500E's and an interesting project with Matt Farah! It was a rusty mess, about to break in half!
