ADMIN EDIT: Car is now for sale at a broker in central CA for ~$100k, with stock chrome wheels (Evos available at extra cost). See post #201 for details. Thread title updated.

Don't know what to make of this listing.

He doesn't put the VIN in the regular Ebay slot but lower in the listing. Doesn't match anything here.
Also, he blacks out the VIN on the attached pic of the window sticker?

VIN = WDBEA36E6RC154682

1994 Mercedes Benz E500 w124 500e LOW MILES - EXCELLENT - ORIGINAL - RECORDS

Please see many Hi-Res photos including undercarriage here:
https://imgur.com/a/vzRGk

This 1994 Mercedes-Benz E500 is in perfect condition and is arguably one of the finest and original w124 E500’s in the country. It looks, runs, and drives like new.

The first owner bought it new from W.I. Simonson Mercedes-Benz in Santa Monica, California and it has never left the state.

He meticulously cared for it, using it as a weekend car and accruing approximately 2,000 miles a year until he later stored it in his private collection. He sold it in 2015 to his former next door neighbor, who is a well-known car collector, Porsche PCNA instructor and moderator on Rennlist forum (whose name and info will be given only to next owner of the vehicle).

Paint is all original with no dents, dings, prior accidents, or paintwork. The original selling dealer painted the lower side trim and bumpers body color at time of original purchase and sale of the vehicle. (See window sticker and dealer add-ons)

The engine is extremely clean and the cadmium plating is perfect. (See detailed pics)

The interior is excellent, with absolutely no re-dyeing of the seats or sagging of the headliner. Carpets and floor mats are flawless. Bolster wear is extremely minimal. (See detailed pics)

The dashboard is in impeccable condition with no cracks, scuffs, warping, or discoloration.

All interior wood, including in the dash, door panels, and front and rear central storage compartments is perfect.

Absolutely everything works properly, including the gauges, lights, sunroof, seats, radio, CD changer, antenna, mirrors, and seat heaters amongst everything else.

Original Mercedes-Benz phone is also included (not in service).

No rust or corrosion at all and the undercarriage is extremely clean. (See detailed pics)

Included is the original window sticker with dealer add-ons, all books, warranty card, Lo-jack booklet, and radio card.

The spare tire and tool roll are both original and unused.

Included are the original 4 keys including an unused valet key still in its plastic and 3 master original keys in OEM leather sheath (only two pictured but have all three original and the valet).

It has been meticulously maintained with many detailed records. For example, some of the oil changes done at the dealer:

Date Miles
=======================
2/10/95 767
11/9/95 5842
10/21/96 9967
4/30/97 11055
6/15/98 12834 (major service)
3/16/99 14266 (flush service)
6/14/00 15152
1/8/02 17169
12/3/03 18750
9/16/04 19299
2/1/05 19758
6/21/05 19879

The car was consistently started, warmed, serviced, and driven approximately 3,000 miles over the last 12 years while in his private collection.

Distributor caps and rotors, all air filters, rear hydraulic cells replaced and SLS fluid and system flushed, oil pan gasket replaced, transmission service, and brake and coolant flush all done recently in 2017. No leaks or drips at all and the self-leveling suspension works as it should.

Engine wire harness looks to have be replaced and updated but I couldn’t find it in the records so I bought a new OEM upper wiring harness which is included in sale. (See detailed pics)

The original wheels and Michelin tires with a lot of tread remaining (22k miles on them) are included but I replaced them due to age and also because the original wheels sold with the car are the less attractive chrome dealer installed option. (See window sticker and add-on)

Car is wearing brand new Mercedes EVO II wheels 17x8.25 shod with new Michelin SuperSport tires. These were allegedly the last set of these wheels made according to the Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine where they were purchased from, however it seems that claim might have been made more than once, but I would safely assume they are not available new anymore.

I also have a set of Three-Piece AMG OZ-Racing 17in wheels or 18in Two Piece AMG BBS wheels available to buyer at extra cost. (See detailed pics)

Last pic shows smaller than a dime sized flaw in clearcoat on front bumper. (Last pic in link)

Re: FS: 1994 500E Pearl Black/Gray 22K miles Ebay Orange, CA

Wow, a brand new car, with a new upper harness and extra premium wheels

from the pictures it appears to be as new, even the driver bolster is new looking

eBay is a strange venue for a car of this quality, bet the reserve is very health....

I pulled the data card, normal looking, but I see a 78 in the codes.. is that referring to something being "grey"?

Re: FS: 1994 500E Pearl Black/Gray 22K miles Ebay Orange, CA

Wow indeed. Don't think I have ever seen one this new/clean. (Excluding Jono's 500Es.)
Glad/sorry it will be well out of my price range, so no temptations will arise.

Looks really nice. Given how much the seller wants for the AMG wheels, I'm guessing the reserve on the car is in six figures.

:duck:

+1. It's likely that some folks here that are active Rennlisters can add some details.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

If the ask is close to or in 6 figure territory, my only requirement is that the Mercedes phone works (i.e. I have to be able to make calls) which means AT&T would have to bring back their TDMA -- 2G -- network.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

I too find the non listing of the VIN in the dedicated slot to be a bit off-putting as is the blanking of it on the sticker. Presumably, there is nothing to hide, but that doesn't bolster confidence.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

From the ad:
"He sold it in 2015 to his former next door neighbor, who is a well-known car collector, Porsche PCNA instructor and moderator on Rennlist forum (whose name and info will be given only to next owner of the vehicle)."

I gotta laugh at that. I think the seller is suggesting that the former owner being a Mod on RL is a good thing???

I have found that the mods on that site are some of the biggest douchebags in the entirety of the online car world. And I've been a part of a metric shyte tons of car forums over the years. They take the cake. Without a doubt.

Looks like a beautiful car on the cosmetic side.

That there has been ZERO SERVICE on the car in TWELVE YEARS is surely a red flag. If I read the ad correctly.

Interesting that the car was delivered to an Alabama MB dealer, but the seller states that it was originally sold out of California.

Listing on eBay is zero cost way to market it. The Reserve will be astronomical to ensure it doesn't sell on via that channel.

$0.02

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

That there has been ZERO SERVICE on the car in TWELVE YEARS is surely a red flag. If I read the ad correctly.

That was covered in the ad:

"The car was consistently started, warmed, serviced, and driven approximately 3,000 miles over the last 12 years."

I hope that doesn't mean it was idled to operating temp monthly.

:wormhole:

Oddly crafted ad.
He offers a chronological schedule of services which end in 2005. Then slips in a soft/vague reference about being "consistently" "serviced" since then.

Matters not to me...
It's too nice to drive. Too not interesting enough to put in a corner of the garage and look at for the next ten to twenty years.

:)

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

I'm interested to see what this car will bring in. I'll bet not as much as the reserve........

No prior record of this car in my private, detailed database.

This is a collector's toy. Beautiful car, but not a daily driver unless your name starts with "Sultan of".

Nice to see good undercarriage photos, btw. Better presentation than most.

This beautiful car is produced to be enjoyed in a highway fast, downshift when flooring it while overtaking [emoji3]

this is a lovely car, shows well, serviced well and presents beautifully....you cant go wrong with the evo wheels....but i have a soft spot for the 3 piece aeros....i actually purchased my spare set of aeros that i have for my sec from this seller. He is a stand up guy, and has a really nice selection of vehicles in his collection. Hopefully the new owner will drive the crap out of it....i know i would

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

Just keep reminding yourself that the yellowed coolant overflow reservoir is the same one which it left the factory with and the owner replacing it prior to the sale would knock countless value off the price of the car.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

I was just musing to myself over what a strange lot we are. We pick the smallest nits and then when there's a car that we can scarcely find fault with, we think, "Oh, screw that! This car's WAY too nice for me!"

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

Regarding the wheels, y'all know that I generally like simple and strong looking wheels, and actively avoid multi-piece ones, but those five spoke 129 AMG multis just bang like an outhouse door in a hurricane...

that the impression i sometimes get from this crowd...its almost like they want to devalue their own cars....if this sells in Canepa territory it should help the value of your cars some degree i assume....doesnt help me much because im still recovering from fixing my w126

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

It’s a nice car to be sure. Not sure why the driver’s seat bolster pic (34 of 98) is photoshopped. But OK. Put that up there with whatever other complaints you have about the listing. But I have no problem with high selling prices for nice low mile .036s, for obvious reasons. Mine has never been a daily driver, so none of these high premiums for garage queens offend me. Although, someone should price deduct for removing the phone, the vintage stereo bits and the coolant reservoir tank. Maybe sell the wheels to fund those “fixes”.

Cheers,

maw

it's really nice to see some clean and well kept E500E's come thru the listings lately!

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

I'd love to see this car go for top dollar at Bring a Trailer or ebay. The higher the price of E500Es like this that get sold means the higher the value of my own. I was really making an observation more of how “into this” we are. Mine was not intended to be critical of us, or anyone else...

I'd love to see this car go for top dollar at Bring a Trailer or ebay. The higher the price of E500Es like this that get sold means the higher the value of my own. That doesn't mean that I intend to sell my car anything ---- but higher values would give me a false sense of superficial smugness that I chose to buy wisely. :-) :-)

From your lips to God's ears, I hope we have a GENUINE sense of superficial smugness!

I was just musing to myself over what a strange lot we are. We pick the smallest nits and then when there's a car that we can scarcely find fault with, we think, "Oh, screw that! This car's WAY too nice for me!"
:runexe:
Isn’t that the way it works though? It’s what captruff’s signature says.

The “peanut gallery” can be intense for the uninitiated or newish member.

A few people here like to pick nits, particularly with higher priced cars that are billed as if they just drove off the showroom floor. And have the asking prices from owners in the “legal marijuana” states who just discovered the properties of tetrahydrocannabinol.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with letting prospective buyers know what they are getting into. The peanut gallery guys are quite adept at picking up things I could never begin to see.

The combination of ever-higher high-water marks for our cars along with fewer and fewer on the road (scarcity) is a good thing for us long-term owners. As I’ve been saying for the past 15 years, the market for the E500E is following the market for the 6.3 and 6.9 models almost to a “T”.

Cheers,
Gerry

Cheers,

Jlaa correctly pointed out that I did see and drive this car in December of 2016. I didn’t go over the car with a fine tooth comb but my impression of the car is consistent with everything being said in the ad. The owner is an enthusiastic collector. He has another .036, a C43, and a two Cosworths, plus many non MB cars. He also lurks on this forum and is likely reading this thread. This car is worth serious consideration for the buyer seeking a top quality car. I’d want it with the original 3L CA plates though!

Well Mr Owner, if you are lurking, and reading this thread, then please PM me and tell me how much cash I would have to part with to get you to part with her? I can't do it now, but after this Summer I should be able to. Of course, assuming your ebay sale doesn't bring in what you had hoped.

My goal is to build myself a mini stable of very low mileage cars that I'm not afraid to drive. I've got my e320 that's as good as that BATS car that just sold. Now I'm looking for a similar condition cabrio, and would love to have a late model e500e that I can put a few thousand miles on per year. Been working my tail off for a long long time for a liquidity event, which is now finally in sight. So, I should be able to pull the trigger later this year, and I won't complain about the upward movement in price as long as its an exceptionally maintained vehicle.

And for me, these are lifetime investments. I'm buying 'em to drive 'em and enjoy 'em:)

And oh, buy the way, I wouldn't want any wheels other than these on that car.

The sports wheels are very cool, but I just prefer OEM all the way.

My experience is that higher-end models don't tend to last on the market too long, unless the price is highly unrealistic. Usually sellers and buyers are able to come to a common point pretty quickly, once the buyer settles on the car.

My recommendation is to pull the trigger NOW ... as it's very very likely this car won't be around in a few months, let alone in 10 months.

Another GVZ rule -- have the money in hand and be ready to jump FAST when you see the car you want, because they never last on the market. Numerous folks here (Melville included, and others) can vouch for this. It's like a contingent offer vs. a clean offer w/pre-approval on a house.

Cheers,
Gerry

Oh no.. :(
This is probably the lowest milage 036 ever revealed here and chromed wheels has nothing to do on that car IMO.
(has never been delivered as a stock item BTW)

The chroming was a dealer -added "upgrade." For the bargain price on $1295, per the add on window sticker.
Selling dealer also painted the lower cladding.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

Exceedingly common to see chromed wheels on MBs sold in Southern California, and somewhat common for cars sold in Texas and Florida.

My own E500 had chromed stock wheels when I got it (it was originally a Southern California car, as well), and I ditched them as soon as I could.

My former SoCal 1990 560SEL also had chromed stock 16-hole Gen 2 W126 wheels.

Sigh. At least replacing tasteless, chromed wheels is an easy fix.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

any guesses on the reserve amt?

Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk

If the car had an Ask, I'd guess in the $80-100 range. Hard to say where it'd sell, but maybe $75-80.

The longer the listing remains on eBay, the lower the selling price will be, IMO. Which is contrary to fundamental logic, but big money would have swept in already.

Robert

:a1:This is why my 500E still sports the original / now yellow coolant tank. I think members fitting new coolant tanks now are severely devaluing their cars. Just wanted to get that out there - I did not mention it before as I did not want to upset anyone who had gone to the bother of replacing their tank!

Thanks, Gerry!
I rarely comment negatively on people's taste & preference, and all are free to do what they like with their cars. But it would be disappointing to see chrome wheels on a rare lowmiler like this. EVO II in diamond cut or AMG Aero II would be the only choices IMO. Luckily it's bolted parts. :star:

Yup. There are not a lot of good W124s of any type so if you are in the market, unless you have a ton of money and a lot of time, it's not realistic to wait for the perfect car. And when you find a good one, pounce. I've been in the market for a little while for a new (old) car and looked into a handful of cars. None were right (except for a sportline coupe that was taken by someone else ASAP after the ad was posted and a 996 911 on BaT that was sold by a member here but was just out of my price range).

Then, a couple of days ago, I had a conversation about a car. The next day the seller sent me a few photos. Within a few minutes we were talking price--and that discussion didn't last long. It went like this:

"I'll sell it to you for $X."
"Will you take $X minus $Y."
"No."
"OK! I'll take it."

Could I find a better car for less money? Maybe. But maybe not. And if I can, it would certainly take me a lot of time. Time spent not playing with my kids etc. and time spent without a car.

Also, when I asked for pics, I specifically said I did not want photos of things like rock chips. Just any major cosmetic issues that can easily be seen even if you're not looking for them. I like nice drivers, not garage queens. I've learned that when buying a car, only worry about things I actually care about. Does it have rust, dents, poorly repaired accident damage, damaged clear coat etc. If I can't see it from 2 feet away, is it worth saying no to the car when I'm not looking for a collector quality car or garage queen? Not to me.

Speaking of jumping fast, this seller has a bunch of cars. The day after we made a deal for the wagon that seemed the best, someone else came by to buy the next best wagon. If I had waited, my wagon would probably be going to someone else.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

Why are we crying about the wheels.. The seller has given byou four options.... The car can suit your hearts desire

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Pearl Black/Gray, 23kmi, eBay (Orange, CA)

It looks like a great car!!

Who cares about the wheels. Looks like the Owner has any kind you want. If you can afford the car you can afford any wheel you want.

I have an idea!!! Maybe we can all chip in a $1.00 and make it a 500eboard.com 'CLUB CAR'.
All members get it for day as long as I get it FIRST!!!:jono:

Got to admit that sharing would be to the delight of the car transporters.

It just looks that way to me. I understand the phone and stereo are original. They’re obsolete to me. But I’m not in the market.

From the receipts shown in the photos, one can deduce that the seller is related to if not actually gallery 81 motorcars. I am really envious of all the awesome hardware that the seller has available to him (from Internet / Social pictures). More power to him! What a first class enthusiast.

i didn't realize the chrome wheels were a dealer addon. i grew up in CA and saw so many models with chromed wheels that I just assumed it was stock.

I am going to reach out to the seller and let him know my situation. I can't pounce now. But who knows, maybe we can work something out that works for him. I am certainly willing to give it a try, especially if I only have a slight chance of securing her.

I'm getting ready to ditch mine, as well, blooming things have corrosion on the inner rim and specifically on the lip where the tire seals. Had 3 slow leakers that a tire shop tried a quick cleanup (didn't work) and then used what they called "lip seal" goop that did work but isn't permanent. I've been surfing for a stock aluminum set, only other alternative is probably to have them cleaned up by a wheel pro and keep them filled with N2.
