Tank in right fender well

See picture below - what is this tank for? It has 2 vacuum (?) lines attached. When I removed it the bottom chamber had some red (ATF???) oily fluid inside. Should I start to worry?

The upper / inner tank is for coolant overflow.

The lower "ant tank" is a vacuum reservoir. If it has ATF inside... make sure your vacuum modulator hasn't failed, allowing ATF to enter the vacuum system.

GSXR is correct — I didn’t look close enough at your picture. My bad. That’s what I get for looking at the photo on my iPhone, which only displayed the top half of the photo (a known bug interaction between XenForo and iPhone/iPad devices).

That is a vacuum storage reservoir. It stores a limited amount of vacuum for when the engine and vacuum pump aren’t running.

Thank you very much guys for the clarification.

Now you got me sweating... Well, I can't really tell if it's been there for a while or not. Since I bought the car I've had the tranny removed from the car twice. If memory serves me well my mechanic said that he replaced either the NSS or vacuum modulator with known good one (used anyway...) because he didn't like it. Now I don't remember which one he replaced...
I don't have any known issues with the transmission except a little harsh change from 2 to 3 and 4. Well, it may be as well me being oversensitive as no one else notices it. The only strange thing would be that when I tried to "soften" the gear change by turning the modulator knob all the way anticlockwise from the initial position there was basically no change. That was a little strange but maybe change in vacuum is marginal?

Gerry,

You probably know this already but my I-Phone 6+ has the same problem.

If I really want to see the pic, I tap the square box w/ the slopped arrow and it brings up the full picture.

This is just in case

lol

I have seen this documented with many other forum owners. The XenForo people are aware of it, but I am not convinced that it is an XF bug. It definitely has to do with how XF displays images, and it does not happen consistently. The photo display works fine on all desktop browsers and platforms (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.).

If you have the modulator with the plastic knob that only moves about 1/2 turn total, you need to pry off the plastic cap and turn the metal T-handle inside for additional adjustment. Try full-turn increments for coarse adjustment, 1/2 to 1/4 turn for fine adjustment. Remember this affects *all* shifts. Make sure there is no flaring at WOT/redline upshifts if you are softening the shifts. It's better to have slightly firm shifts, than slightly flaring.

I will remove the knob to do more adjustments and test drive the car when it's back on the road. Once the knob is removed - can it be put back? I remember reading somewhere that removing the plastic knob basically destroys it and it cannot be put back in place.

Although the old cap will likely crack or break on removal, it can usually be re-used. However once you pin down the final adjustment, you can buy a new plastic cap, they are only a few dollars. If you carefully file off the retaining tab on a new one, I think you can re-use a modified one indefinitely.
