All,

I have an SECOND upper wiring harness for a late production E320 **without** ASR. It came off of a 1993 E320. It is NOT appropriate for E320 models with ASR.

MB part number is 124 440 56 32

The production date is November, 2011.

All connectors are in great condition, no split plastic, etc.

The harness is still available from MB, with list price $1,470, discounted to ~$1,090.

I will sell this harness for $175, shipped, in the US. Overseas shipping is additional, per actual shipping cost.

The harness is in great condition.

I also have ANOTHER harness for sale in a separate thread, the same part number.

This harness is still for sale -- if you have an later car without ASR, this is the harness you need !

Hi Gerry,

I am in France. If you had a upper wiring harness for an E280 without ASR, but with ASD (WDB1240281C070924), that might interest me. The one in my car (1993) is dead! I don't have the car at home right now, and I can't see the reference of the current wiring harness. If you need it, it will be possible soon.

Didier

This wiring harness is spec'd by Mercedes-Benz for the following models:

124.028 (280E/E280 -- cars built from July 1993 onward)
124.032 (300E/E320 sedan -- cars built from July 1993 onward)
124.052 (300CE/E320 coupe -- cars built from July 1993 onward)
124.066 (300CE/E320 cabriolet -- cars built from July 1993 onward)
124.092 (300TE/E320 wagon -- cars built from July 1993 onward)

The best way to confirm your car's part number is to look at the label on the wiring harness that is installed on your car.

MB part system notes that this harness replaces (supersedes) the harness part number 124 543 90 33.

Your car's data card from MB is attached. It has the VIN and engine numbers.

Here is the Mercedes-Benz parts catalog for your VIN (note your engine number at the top of the screen)

And notes from technicians (noting that your car does NOT have option code 471).

Would you have one for 1993 500E? Thanks.
It appears that the correct cable for your car (a 1993 500E) would be 124 440 20 06. This part number is available from MB for a list price of $505, discountable to ~$375.

(The harness part number 124 543 95 26 is only good until the end of model year 1992, and it's more expensive than the harness for the later cars.)

My mechanic suggested I take a photo of a part of the harness where the wires are deteriorating and the number on the connector is 1405400081 but when I google it I'm coming up with this title for the part below. Does this seem correct that I would need the part you mention above plus this one? My mechanic told me that I need the "engine harness" and from some reading I've done in the past I've read that there is an upper harness and a lower harness. I'm assuming of course that as he showed me the wire coating deterioration in the plastic channels on the top of the engine he must be referring to the "upper harness". Any clarification or pointing me to posts that will help me understand would be appreciated. Thanks again!

The number on the connector is going to be the number that is specific to that connector's piece of plastic. That's not for the harness itself.

Yes, the "engine harness" would generally be considered the Upper Harness, particularly if your mechanic pointed to connections on the top of the engine. The upper harness would have all of the connections to the fuel injectors, MAF, the cam magnets (on a 119 engine), and so forth and it would originate in the CAN box (computer box) area underhood (or behind the battery on an M104 engine).

The lower harness mainly goes on the lower part of the engine, to the oil pressure sender, oil level sender (on the side of the oilpan), to the alternator, starter, etc. and leads from the battery to these items. Here is the HOW-TO on replacing the LOWER harness on an M104 engine. You can see that it's a much less extensive harness than then upper one.

The number for the harness should be able to be found using this information below. It applies generally for the M104 or the M119.

Thanks Gerry!

I look at the part number as soon as possible.

AFAIK, the M104 harness is not different between ASR and non-ASR, despite the note in the EPC. As mentioned in the other FS thread, the EPC chassis/VIN break for M104 harness is WRONG. You must match the part number, or at least check the connector type at the thermostat outlet... the connectors are completely different. I believe the manually-entered note (which is not from Mercedes!) was a mistake from someone who ran into the harnesses being different, and did not understand the issue was a wrong VIN break, nothing related to ASR.

For the E500E discussion intermixed with this thread, there's no need to check part numbers on USA models. There is a break point between 1992 and 1993-up harnesses.

No, that's wrong @gsxr. Physically different part, with different part numbers. The ASR-equipped M104s have an extra knock sensor connector on the block -- actually TWO different knock sensor connectors.

Both of them are a royal PITA to get at, as opposed to the non-ASR cars. The non-ASR cars take about half the time to remove the harness than the ASR cars do. As someone who has removed both types (ASR and non-ASR) at the wrecking yards, trust me when I say this. The ASR cars' knock sensors are on the driver's side of the block, underneath the intake manifold stack, and are tough to get at when you're on your back underneath a car !!

The M104 ASR cars have different harness part numbers:

124 440 52 32, 124 440 40 33 (original/superseded number), or 124 440 27 33

The two non-ASR M104 harnesses that I currently have for sale were a BREEZE to remove from the cars, in comparison to the harnesses from the ASR-equipped M104 cars.

Gerry, I am not sure that is correct. The note is simply referring to the late-style harness, not necessarily related to ASR. We would need to have evidence of an early-build car with ASR using the "late" harness to prove this accurate.

The EPC only has a VIN/chassis break which is incorrect (and no mention of ASR except for the XPISS notes). The XPISS notes should be taken with the same grain of salt as when reading BenzWorld posts. The longer note from ROTOLOD is accurate. The first two, not so much.

Dave, see my above post.

If I remember correctly, non-ASR 104.992 engines only have one knock sensor. ASR-equipped engines have two knock sensors. The harness is different between the models to accommodate this. The branches of the wiring harness that go to each knock sensor have a fairly stiff/robust yellow and black striped wire. I know it well because I have cussed at them many times in the access and removal.

Here is the VIN for a 1995 ASR-equipped car (it should be slightly familiar to you): WDBEA92E5SF311289

Check and you will see that this VIN has code 471 (equipped with ASR). Look up the harness part number on your green-screen EPC, and you will see that it is a different number than the parts that I am selling for non-ASR cars.

Gerry, the EPC shows that VIN as past the (incorrect) cutoff, so it's only showing the late harness part number - screenshot below.

To confirm that ASR is indeed the issue, we'd need either an early car with ASR using the late harness, or a late car without ASR using the early harness.

It's also possible that only LATE cars, WITH ASR, use the "late" harness...

Never mind, I'm not going to argue. I will just say that anyone who wants to buy either of the harnesses that I am selling, should carefully look at the part number of the harness that is installed on their car, and consider purchasing this harness if it is appropriate for their car. Generally speaking, this harness for sale should be for a later car.

Hi Gerry,

Following my last message regarding my E280 (WDB1240281C070924), I don't see any number on the upper wiring harness in my car and I don't want to touch it for fear of breaking the insulation. EPC says part number is 124 440 52 32 with engine number 104942 10 003843. I don't know if 124 440 56 32 is compatible with mine?

Didier

It does not appear that these harnesses are compatible. Both are specified for 104.992 and 104.942 engines, but for different markets. The 124 440 56 32 is only specified for .992 and .942 engines in the US, Japan and South Africa markets. European engines are not shown for this part.

The 124 440 52 32 harness is also specified for these engines, but it looks for all countries including Europe.

So I think that the 56 32 harness is probably specific for engine equipment for a few markets, and would not be a good idea to get for your car. I would pursue getting the correct harness for your car. If you search more, you should be able to find the part number on the label on your harness.
