Values?

Hello All
What are peoples opinions on the value of our cars now? Cars below the 100k mile mark? I know that is vague but cars that are taken care of not neglected.
Values seem to be all over the place.
Happy Holidays.

Many pages of opinions gathered over many years .

While Hagerty claims to work off of actual sales data, it seems like a lot of their values are inflated. When I first got my 1965 220SEB it was a $3000 car, yet Hagerty wouldn't insure it for anything less than $5000. That's fine with me, but still, it's an example of where I think their values are somewhat inflated, and this is based on other cars I've checked values on through their pricing service.

My $0.02 on this as per having managed data and placed offers in at least 5 of these cars inside the last 14 months.

The few examples to be considered were in Very good condition to excellent condition and were trading between mid $40s to high $50s. Normal non Renntech nor AMG models. Also non limited. All sub 100k miles.

1.- Renntech optioned 6.0L offered at $75K, sold for $68K
2.- Limited optioned E500 offered at $65K, withdrawn from market.

The car I ended up with is an outlier so not representative by any means, same as that E500 Limited from Canada that sold recently on BAT, it is the lonesome dot on the their chart upper right corner. That selling price is non representative of anything IMO.

This result may be a good pointer as well. Did not see this car previously discussed in the forum.

VIN: WDBEA036E1RC139698

Love the color.

I believe that this one just hasn’t been seen by the right category of buyers/bidders. Very small circle of potential buyers at the time of sale.

@gerryvz before posting, I searched first by the VIN and nothing came up.
That's because you didn't search for a valid VIN. All US VINs have 17 numbers/digits.

The actual VIN number is:

WDBEA36E1RC139698

As we say in the high-tech industry, "garbage in, garbage out."

FWIW I am not fond of constant discussion of market price of these cars. It is like discussing the amount in one’s bank account. Uncouth.
I totally disagree. I think the "market" for the cars, and current observations on it, are completely relevant to past, current and future owners of the cars. For those of us who have owned our cars a long time, it is particularly interesting to see how the market for them has changed, grown, matured over the years. Market price and situation discussions are at the core of what we do here.

Not unlike oil discussions. And now gun discussions :sniper:

Agree wholeheartedly with @gerryvz , I also think market and pricing discussions are key to the uninitiated if they are reviewing or considering buying one of these cars. I wish I would've been pointed in the direction of this forum many years before I actually joined. Would have saved me some time and probably would have acquired the car sooner, not that I'm complaining but I spent too much time, effort and resources looking into cars which if I had posted them or most likely found them already discussed in here, I would've passed sands the $$$ for the PPI. But I digress. It was all worth the experience and education. So going back to this post, $36K+ for this Rosewood '94 example was a steal. So @Ctibulschii send us a message in a few years if you ever decide to sell..

Happy Holidays everyone..!!

Market price and situation discussions are at the core of what we do here.

Perhaps I can elaborate. I am not fond of discussing pricing as the #1 mission of this site. Personally I like discussing maintenance, modifications, etc. as #1 and then market pricing as a second or third priority.

Over the years I have seen forums (namely rennlist) decline in technical quality and the S/N ratio go down when pricing seemingly becomes the #1 focus (as opposed to a secondary or tertiary focus.)

That said, my dollars are not where my mouth is regarding this site. Cheers.

I was going to put the nadir in E500E prices in the 2008-2011 time frame.

If I had to give a single year, it would probably have been 2009-2010. If you go back in the For Sale threads to some of the earliest ones, you will see some shockingly low prices as compared to what you see now.

I would say that prices dramatically picked up from late 2016-2018, but have leveled off over the past 18-24 months. But, are still going in a positive direction, albeit very very slowly.

It is pretty normal for cars to hit their lowest value around 15-20 years after they were new. This is why W210 E55 AMG and W211 AMG models are such a great deal right now (basically where the E500E was around 2010). In the coming years, the non-modified and nicer examples are going to start going up in value.

Referencing another converation regarding the E50 AMG (nod to the @lowman), I believe that the E50 MAY have some very modest (5-10%) premium over the E55 AMG, due to its exclusivity and M119 engine. However, because it was never sold in the US, it is always going to be somewhat overlooked, because you can probably count the number of people in the US who know what an E50 AMG is on a couple of hands.....

I believe the E500E, with the Porsche connection and "old school" build quality of the W124, will always be worth more than the E50 or the E55 AMGs, though.

I’m just glad I bought my 500E when I did and what I paid for it. Buying now would definitely be more challenging and costly.
I agree 100%. All of us E500E "OGs" rode the curve down to the bottom, and have been riding it back up. I have NO doubt that I would pay, today, DOUBLE what I paid for my car when I bought it in late 2003.

There is only one way for E500E prices now and that is UP. I am glad to own one and watch that happen VS being outside looking in (like the Cosworth I'd like to add soon enough)

Of course the early Porsche assembled 500Es take precedence

I don't think that pricing and market value has EVER been anywhere close to THE primary focus of this site. The HOW-TO section of this site, the Wiki, and the Cars for Sale sections certainly provide the backbone of this site.

It actually seems that about 90% of the threads on the site these days, tend to point to one thing: CHANGE YOUR INSULATORS.

Of course, about 70% of the E500E HOW-TOs are courtesy of one single individual (no, not talking about you @liviu165).

As to the thread's topic, what year did depreciation curve bottom out for E500Es?

I was going to say between '09 and '11... I bought in Q4 '11 and 3 months later (the exact 20-year mark for my Jan'92 build) it had doubled in value according to Haggerty... that was pretty much the closing of the affordability window... after that the values rose steadily and rapidly along with the number of "young classic" articles that were written... sort of like what's happening with the E46M cars now, except instead of 20 years it's the 15 year mark there... I've owned them both since this time frame and while I've been happy to see the values rise, I don't think I'd pay what either are commanding today... but then again I'm not a seller at those values either.
