W124 Diesel vs. 500E

Can somebody please explain to me why a W124 E300 Diesel is selling for more than a 500E? What's next....?
The car wasn't worth it. Not super low miles, no Dean/Wob effect, not rare colors, no options, nada. It was a nice car but not 500E-money nice.

This was a total pixxing contest between the 2 top bidders. As you can see from the bid history below, actual market value is likely in the $20k ballpark. The lone bidder at $31k was an anomaly, IMO.

$57,000 bid placed by Dlamb911
$55,000 bid placed by shanglander88
$31,000 bid placed by AHG2
$18,000 bid placed by PorscheGuy73
$17,500 bid placed by markholthoff
$16,000 bid placed by PlaneJunk
$15,500 bid placed by B_Newman
$15,250 bid placed by rbillings1

Time will tell if the winning bidder consummates the deal, or decides to take the $3k loss in BaT fees and walk away, after he sobers up. Based on his comment post-sale, it sounds like he really did want the car. I suspect the recent years of all-dealer service may have helped. From glancing at the photos it has worn sway bar bushings, collapsed subframe bushings, wrong antifreeze, and probably some other bits that add up to $5k in deferred maintenance - not bad.

I really want to add another Mercedes Benz diesel to my “colection”

My W126 with the 3.5 liter diesel engine was so slow but driving it was so nice with the long wheel base.

I suspect a turbo diesel in a lighter w124 with working boost wouldn’t be tooo slow haha

Wow - pretty amazing results for the seller.

There are some great cars out there - but I think @Bogeyman is right on the money. The easy to find ones are clapped out and need TLC. But they do respond great to that! And for the pedestrian models, there's a good parts supply. I've just about got everything sorted on my 87 300D and the entry level price of $2,000 made it easy to get into.

@ArauzMotoring OM603 w/ Turbo is no slouch and the handling is great! Much nicer than a W126, IMO. I recently sold my 1987 300SDL which is what I am comparing to.

Would still love to own a 400E or 500E one day - but love all of the W124s. I'd settle for driving a 500E sometime 🤣

i friend of mine installed an OM606 turbo with a 722.6 in a 350SDL. The thing would smoke my Euro 560SEC.

Go for a W461 / 250GD - Wolf from the German army. You'll learn to love snail speed.
