WANTED W124 Transmission tunnel insulation wanted

HI All ,

I have pulled my transmission out and its being rebuild.
The original transmission tunnel insulation that goes on the underside of the car is perished.

I am looking for a new one asap before my transmission comes back from rebuild

Appreciate any leads or help.

NLA for a long time but I believe @gerryvz had offered a while ago to make his NOS unit available for someone to replicate the transmission tunnel insulation and for them to make those available for others for purchase. Can’t find the thread right now and since this was a while ago Gerry might not even be open to that idea anymore.

I made one myself from aluminium and polyurethane foam. I Suggest you to do the same.

Yep I have researched and am going to try this product and cut it to size,

I should probably take a piece of newspaper and create an exact template for the blanket from my NOS unit. That way it could be made available for anyone on this site who wants to create their own.
That would be awsome, Any chance you could help me out and do this over the next few days, as I have my transmission out for rebuilt and it will be back next week and will be going back in. In return I will cut a few out of the roll I am buyingh and have them available at cost price to anyone who wants one.

I can get to this later today (evening) I think. I can put my hands on the blanket easily as it is readily accessible on the top of one of my basement shelving units. How best to get you the template? Send by mail?

@mrindiafromuk , thank you for the effort of replicating this part. I would love to buy one of the replicas from you. My transmission will come out next week too and when that happens it would be great to be able to put in the insulation mat! Please direct message me the price and your paypal and I will get it done. Will send you my shipping address via dm now.

Thank you @gerryvz for making the new old stock part available for replication!

NP , I will cut as many as I can from the roll I am getting. The good thing about this material I am using it can also be self adhesive if the clips are broken

Creating this template has been an absolute nightmare. I was a full hour into it, and had to start over. This is because the blanket has major amounts of complex curves. Large sheets of newspaper taped together didn't adapt well to these curves.

So I restarted using much smaller (8.5 x 11") sized sheets of newsprint, which I tape together and which captures all of the curves much easier. You can't flatten out the transmission tunnel blanket due to it being "pre-molded" in a specific shape, so you have to attach paper to catch all of the curves and such. There are also plenty of holes in it (for various components) as well as perforated holes that may or may not need to be punched out if needed when installing. I'll do my best to capture all of these in the appropriate places.

Right now I'm two full hours into creating the template, and probably have two more hours to go; then go to the post office to mail it before 5 PM today.

Not the funnest project. I'd rather remove my E500's radiator or replace the front rotors on my 560SEC......

So grateful for the effort you are putting in. I did look at your pictures and had the same thoughts about the curves. I was already thinking that it is a good job that the padding I have ordered has adhesive. This means we can get a a template cut and the adhesive will allow for the pad to take shape sticking to the underside of the floor. I will make a video/pics of installation of pad.

Done. 5:30 PM. 3.5 hours + 1 hour for the first attempt.

Before the first try …

Some close-up photos for reference of the holes and perforated cut-outs. Any thru-hole I marked either in an outline or black ink if small.

From memory, the important holes are for the 2 heater box drains (foam tubes) and the O2 sensor connector. Many / most of the other locations are not used on the 034/036, which seems odd.

So out of the roll of material I got I managed to cut 3 extra beside my own . I have to be honest to save time I did not use the full template on my car because had a small window of time to install, and I sort of faced a significant labor bill to install the whole piece. So I cut out the old perished bits and added what needed to. The pieces I cut using the template are full shape. The material is soft enough to mold into the curves very easily. I left a little extra for trimming down. You will need to cut holes for AC drain and wire plugs. but that is easy once you are installing. use a craft blade. Clean surface with a spirit to degrease before sticking down. I only have 3 pieces and I don't really want to buy another role pf this material at $300. I do have the template given by @gerryvz for the next person.
