I just got outbid on a pre-merger AMG burlwood knob on RM auctions. It got up to a ridiculous price and I bailed out. But it started me thinking about where else to find one.

Can anyone recommend a good quality wooden shift knob for a 1992 500E? Doesn't have to be factory as long as it's good quality. Thanks in advance for any help. I looked on line but didn't see anything that would suit.

To increase your availability of shift knobs, you should upgrade your car to a W202 shifter shaft, then you can use twist one knobs from newer models.

mercedes amg pre merger automatic wood shift knob | eBay

Not sure what your budget is but found this one on eBay, really nice looking gearknob and supposedly original AMG (not entirely sure how to check authenticity on these) :beerchug:

I’d be highly suspect of that eBay listing as this are the pictures I used when I sold that knob!!! The buyer was in SoCal

The original AMG knobs are the exact size and shape as the OE Leather knob. All the fakes of this style are larger and more round.

Heads up that all of these knobs, even NOS, are a few shades lighter than OE burl that’s in good condition. It drive me crazy so I sold it.

I consider ebay one of the better platforms for buy/sell but indeed you need to be wide awake. FB Marketplace and Craigslist is a cesspool, ugh stay away:doh:

Yeah that's not a good sign at all..

They're cool gear knobs, you see a lot of fake ones but originals are few to none, I wanted one for my 300CE but decided to get a NOS sportline knob through a friend to complete my cars complete OEM look as it's a sportline.

Thanks for clarifying that, nice to know how to identify reals to reps as I've always been a bit clueless on these.

Appreciate all the help. I would just like a nice wooden knob that matches the interior wood, more or less, if possible. Doesn't have to be AMG- the one I was bidding on went for $300 all told. That's a bit much. Thomas, thank you and let me know what you have.

I found what appears to be a proper shift knob (looks like they are called 'buttons', don't ask me why). I ordered it from DE and it showed up today. I won't get to try to fit it until next week, as I am going out of town on vacation. From what I can see on the shop diagrams, it looks like the knox, which has female threads at the base of it where the rod goes in, just screws onto the shaft. If anyone has first hand experience with this, I'd welcome hearing about it, because the procedure for removing the entire shifter looks pretty complicated.

If it won't fit the 500E, maybe it will fit on another car.

Jim, can you post a photo of the knob you purchased?

The old knob+shaft unscrews after you loose the jam nut. Might be some YouTube videos showing how to do this. Try not to break any of the plastics on top of the shifter assembly, some parts may be NLA.

I tried to do this today, but the light wasn't good enough in the (underground) storage garage to see what I was doing. I'll get the car out and into daylight and see if I can get the old knob off.

Yes, I'll post a photo of the new one. If the old one turns out to be a knob and shaft combination, I probably bought the wrong one to replace it.

@Jim Rosenthal , maybe this could be interesting for you? No affiliation!
Maybe I'll try these guys. I have had no luck. Adsit advertise that they have them, but I've had negative experiences with them in the past, I would rather not trade with them.

Sorry for a late reply, I’m moving from one workshop to another, juggling a third that I’m leaving at the same time. I haven’t found the one I believe I have yet. I will come across it eventually, but I don’t know when exactly.

Yeah, I'd avoid giving Adsitco any of my $$$. Read their return policy very carefully before buying - they charge you for returns even if they make a mistake. Old thread here.

:fun:

They sent the wrong part, and declined to give a refund. This was years ago, but I don't think things have changed. I forgot to post a photo of the manual-transmission one that I have. I'll do so this week. Perhaps someone here can use it. I don't think it will fit any of my MB cars; I only have one manual shift car, and that car has a Getrag transmission.
