For the life of me, can't remember what is the name of this grey-ish material that is used as the top base layer as shown in this pic?

I have a project "brewing", and while back, I was told by a local, very experienced installer (unfortunately retired now) that for older, slightly worn seat pads, a layer of this material is recommend to be used. This way, there is much less chances for the new skins to have wrinkles (steaming is still a must).
