I am in contact with a local parting a E420. Has rust and a broken engine He doesn't want to fix it and doesn't want to sell the whole car.

Knowing my brain I will likely forget sth important so what should I try to get from this parts car?

If someone needs sth please feel free to let me know and I will ask about it too

ASR or non-ASR? Color combo? Etc...

:apl:

This is what i would take:

  • Sportline steering box
  • Speakers with warring
  • Plastic side panels in the engine compartment, maybe also heatshields
  • Zoom tubes if intact
  • Plastic hose going in to the brake booster
  • Driveshafts if in good condition without a lot of play
  • Rubber seals at the bottom of air scoops (I'm willing to buy them along with right air scoop)
  • Try getting NSS for cheap if it was working
  • EZL
  • Sunroof rails if intact
  • Throttle cable
  • Fan clutch if working correctly
  • Maybe front LCA's? if they are OEM and the rubber is intact (MB have only left side of late-LCA with sportling bushings left in stock, rest is NLA...)
  • Sportline shifter knob if in decent condition
  • Check if it has auto dimming rearview mirror, if it has one I would take it.
  • Rubber seal under the windshield?
  • Ignition wires clips
  • Front fender paneling, they are 400E420 specific not everyone know this and propably NLA, MB classic center is not even showing them. 7 years ago they where avalible for around $150 unpainted.
I'm probably forgetting a lot of things but that's what I remember of top of my head right now.

More stuff to add to the list above:

  • Fan shrouds (top+bottom) with rubber flaps, if intact
  • Fan shroud rubber flaps, if not shrounds are damaged
  • Fan clutch if OE Sachs/Horton and undamaged
  • All CAN computer modules and MAF (also EZL as Kridre mentioned)
  • Sportline seats, front & rear, other misc interior parts (visors, door panels, etc)
  • 2.65 ASR differential would be useful for USA/Japan 034's
  • Exhaust crossover pipe - may be rusted and not worth saving
  • Exhaust catalyst pipe - cut off resonator if necessary
  • 320mm front brake calipers & dust shields
  • Front & rear sway bars (036 bars are used on Sportline 034)
  • Complete instrument cluster
  • Front wheel speed sensors (think these are NLA)

Thanks for your input!
I asked him about the following parts yesterday:
Sway bars
Steering box
Interior (seats and door boards)
Maf
Throttle cable
Fuel sending unit
Instrument cluster
wheels
Air intakes
Engine bay plastics and heat shields
Fan shrouds
Differential

Will phone him tomorrow and ask about the other mentioned parts too.

If somebody needs something please feel free to let me know.

FYI on the throttle cable, last I checked these were available new - if so, buy a new one.

If this car has the 90L fuel tank, the 90L tank *and* yellow-top sending unit are both valuable. I thought the 90L tank was optional on the 034 in Europe?

Yes, throttle cable is available new for around $160.

Oh and do not forget to look at trans tunnel insulation, maybe it is in good condition but I don't think so.

Just to be correct, my list is not what I'm willing to buy but pats that I find valuable.

Only thing I need right now are rubber seals in air scoops that go under the bumper and maybe steering box heat shield if not damaged.

My engine mounts collapsed so much that exhaust manifold grinded away my heat shield in two places.

Whoa! Throttle cable pricing is far different in USA... only $36 MSRP (link). o_O

Trans tunnel insulation is almost always in terrible condition, and requires removing the transmission to access.

My list was also parts that are NLA, valuable, or otherwise worth saving from the junkyard.

BTW, I did not realize the front fender mouldings were unique to the 034! Any idea what exactly is different vs non-V8 trims?

:choochoo:

I'm late to the party, most has been said, but a few more stuff:
  • Engine undercover (called also bellypan), part number A124 524 31 30, if not cracked, missing pieces. NLA now, I doubt it will be reproduced.
  • If car has infrared locking, then IR receiver on driver's door, part number A124 820 01 97. Further - if there are (is) IR key, then key + the IR module located under the back seat, passenger side. Modules part number is A202 820 44 26 if the car has immo, or A124 820 59 26 if the car has no immo. The key and module are paired, so taking just a module won't give you much, unless you know someone who is able to pair a key with a module (actually, I know such person, just in case someone needs).
  • Front lights and blinkers, if made by Hella, and in good condition (Hella is not willing to reproduce them). These are not legendary E500 / 500E lights, but for those who may want to keep car on original parts, this becomes the only option.
I do not need the IR stuff (already have a pair, and IR receivers), but they go pricey on ebay. However, I might be interested in engine undercover (mine has cracks in the middle, I'm considering to give it for plastic welding).

UGH. I didn't know the splash shield / cover 124-524-31-30 went NLA... :banghead:

I wonder how long before the 036 panel is also NLA.

@744Brillantsilber: Merlin, let me know if there are other parts that you need which are cheaper in the U.S. I am going to be in Germany in Nov for a business trip and happy to bring parts back for you. Send me a note and I will give you my address to which you can have the parts delivered here in the U.S.

@gsxr Normal non V8 on the left and 400E420 on the right. I think this change is made to make some room for 16x7 wheels. Someone installed on my 400E non V8 moulding and the wheel made some room by itself.

I'm glad I bought the underbelly pan few years ago, if I remember correctly on the sticker it was made in 2008 with a lot of dust from storage.

I will be at the dealer in this week for some parts, I will ask again about throttle cable again, maybe they told me something wrong, but I'm almost 99% sure the price was 730PLN with tax so around $160... NSS is cheaper in US also, $90 at autohausaz vs 150 euros on eBay. I was trying to order it, but the shipping defeats the purpose.

Fortunately, I replaced mine a while ago. It hasn’t seen much time on the road. Maybe 3K miles. Still looks new.

AFAICT the E500E panel A1245242730 is still available... get them while you can.

Tip for anyone ordering - buy local, even if it costs more. Shipping that panel is difficult and the rear corners are often broken during shipment.

Doesn't hurt to replace the rectangular "nuts" that snap into the chassis (A0019949845), or at least have some new ones on hand, as a few of the 6 total are often stripped and won't let the screws (A2019900536) fully tighten.

Wish I had known about the 034 panel going NLA, I'd have picked up a spare. Used ones are always broken and if pieces are missing, they are difficult to repair.

:spend:

Merlin @744Brillantsilber, if the situation changes I am interested in both plastic headlight housings (sitting in the chassis housing the headlights). I think both are NLA, and BTW are they the same as for the 036?
