What's going on with the "G"?

Thanks to all the regulations, most cars really do look alike. The shape of G-wagen really stands out against the background of grey mass. I think the same algorithm is working for Jeep Wrangler's success

Here's one with some crazy options and even crazier price:

Desert sand my rear end - that's light ivory just like on my "87 TDT...

I don't necessarily understand the technical aspect of colors and design, but I like to think I have a decent eye for seeing what works and what doesn't.

That REALLY doesn't. Maybe the pictures have been tweaked, or something, but that color is really awful. Like, go-back-to-the-paint-store-and-have-them-remix-it awful.

Toyota has been pushing the heavy, solid color appearance for a while on their small offroad vehicles. They are approximately 300% more successful at it.

Be careful, I think Gerry has a G-wagen on order. Don't know in what color though :boxing::wormhole:

I had a G550. It was black over black over black over black over black over black. Which is basically the only way they should be made.

lol

For me, the 90s and its reverberations that last to this day in eastern europe have spoiled black color on prestige cars. I associate it with bandits, and bandits-cum-government corruptionists. It's kind of like Disco music. Used to be cool, now subject of relentless jokes/nausea inducing. I understand the perception is different in United States

I was just over at MB Arlington this afternoon.

Hold on to your wallet.
And wash up real good afterward.

DISCLAIMER: Those bastards have twice tried to f**k me on a new car purchase. I swore to them after the second time, that I would take every opportunity to bad mouth them in the future.

And, coincedentally, the first time was on a "new" G550 that had previously been delivered to a customer, but returned after a short time. Hadn't been Titled, but I was alerted to the situation by a salesman who actually had a conscience.

And, while I'm ranting against those assholes... the second time was on an E63S. They had one. I wanted it. Put down a deposit. They slow rolled me for two days on the paperwork, and then let me know they had sold it to somebody else. Not even a half-hearted apology from them.

I try to minimize time-in-state when it comes to Virginia overall. Mostly it's just to Reagan Airport ... in and out. Occasionally Dulles. Keeps radar detector exposure & related fines down.

There's only one "good" MB dealer in our area, IMO. And that's Euro Bethesda. Arlington are sleazy and Chantilly is a glorified buy-here/pay-here lot. The rest are merely occupying space.

Chantilly sucks so bad that they actually complained to MBNA about Euro making too many sales to customers in their "territory." The last new MB we bought from Euro had to have my wife's office in Arlington as the "sell-to" address in order to keep everything kosher with corporate.

@ace10, could you please unpack why Chantilly is a "glorified BHPH" and Bethesda dealer is good? It's a general curiosity on my part

I went to Chantilly for alignment twice and once to buy a part that I needed that same day. All experiences exceeded my, admittedly low, expectations. MB of Arlington's parts department is run by some old fart who marks up parts MSRP by 25%. I looked into his eyes and twiced my finger at the temple, when he arrogantly "justified" why it's completely normal. He was appalled that I was appalled, lmao

Random thoughts about Chantilly:
Small store, incredibly limited inventory.
When you drive up to the front, there is a pack of hungry sales drones ready to accost you. Nothing subtle or upscale about it. An inexperienced group who appear to lust after the Audi offerings next door rather than what they're selling.
I've heard that on the service side, they're the B Team. Big brother Tysons has the experienced techs who get the best of everything.
Not had any issues with the parts department the 2x I've used them.
The one time I called Roadside, the tech came from Chantilly with a fresh battery. Prompt and courteous.
I've never met or heard of anyone buying a car there. Which is very odd to me. And might be why they are so defensive about protecting their footprint. I suspect they sell a lot of entry-level cars.

EMC is a big store. Been in business forever. They have techs who have been wrenching for a long time. The whole service operation runs like clockwork, for the most part.
On the sales side, it's a hit or miss thing.
My SA is a track rat like me. A car guy. When I was using EMC for service, he and I would discuss the line items, and he would suggest the easy things that I could do myself in order to keep the ticket $$$ down.
They've got massive inventory.
They would send a porter to pick up my car for service. Even out at my house, and hour away.

Funny enough about Arlington... I had two good service experiences there.

I feel like I was ripped off every time I used Tysons for service.

I've heard good things about Alexandria, even though it is Arlington's little brother.

You made me think of this classic video:

"You can sense as it slowly but surely warps human nature to its ways....."

Cool to see an old swedish (?) car review. As recently as 2007 things were different. The stereotypes he's using is exactly why a black W140 is sort of mocking concept amongst 30+ year olds, in advanced Eastern European circles.

I think its actually from Turkey? I think? Anyways, I am with you 100% on that "mocking concept".

Uh. . . just bought a 2003 G500, so, one of the three 500E's must go to a new home.
