Aside from Jimbo, who else can convince me that it'll be fine outside?? Suburbanites don't count! City dwellers I'm interested in:bump:

I used to, but with the car cover on it at all times. Now it's in a garage (at home and work) and I still cover it.

Bing:

Depends on what city....

Chicago -- might as well just drive it to the chop shop, Detroit -- you wont even have a chance to get out of your car before it's stolen, Monte Carlo -- you can leave your wallet on the dash of a Ferrari convertable with the top down and it will still be there in the morning.
Suburban areas, such as Brixton for example, are probably much safer...

Kind Regards,

Ron

I do. It's parked on the public parking next to my house. But then again, I live in a quiet area without many cars passing :)

Do remember that the paint they used isn't available now anymore due to environment restrictions, but it's MUCH better than the water-based junk they use now. The only way to break it is to park it in 40C in the full sun the whole day, each day, or to scratch it with something sharp. Mother nature can't hurt it.

[sub]Do I sense some second thoughts about selling the car? ;)[/sub]

I never do. Even always try to park it inside.
Parts are very popular and cars got stolen just for it....

On this note, yes I agree, we don't get extreme weather here, but....

this I'm worried about! 124s in London are quite popular with Thieves for export to african countries, especially being a left hooker!

Am I having second thoughts, maybe ?:?

So is your PC and/or laptop, your iPhone/whatnot. You prefer not using them because of this? Have it insured, don't park in areas with much wall paintings and large groups of colored people who watch you driving and walk towards you when you park.

Seriously. Of course it's best to have it stored inside. But not keeping/having/buying/using something because you think it might get stolen is just dumb.

Duh!!!!

In the UK its not only the typical car thieves, thugs and such.. their major problem is youth gangs who cannot be touched by law because they are "just kids"... you can get stabbed to death and you can't fight back (that's child abuse)... careful out there bing.

Sounds like they need a few clones of Bernie Goetz in the UK.

In the UK you cant park anything half decent in the road of any urban area. No respectfor anything, will be "keyed" because it is there. Stolen for export well that is something else. Ladas were a target some years ago in the NE of england for export to Eastern europe. I have had cars stolen from my off street parking in Middlesbrough and broken for spares by "travellers". But we must respect their human rights to do what they want!!!!! Bernie would be jailed.
It must be difficult for you guys in the USA to understand how expensive life in London is, renting storage or a decent garage will cost you as much as to rent a home in Houston. As for parking on the street in Ibiza no, owners have no regard for the condition of their own vehicles let alone anyone else.

Phil

I travel to London at least twice a year, and have actually looked into buying property there, so I know how expensive it is (depending on where, of course). It's pretty expensive, but in the same general ball-park as any large US city (San Francisco, New York, etc.).

renting storage or a decent garage will cost you as much as to rent a home in Houston.
Indeed, a good reason to move to a place like Houston. You can have a nice, band new, lavish home with a swimming pool (and a good-sized shop for your car collection & tools) on an acre or two of land near Houston, for the price of a shanty in London. And nice sunny weather to driver your cars in :)

But then you've got to put up with Americans.
/me runs for cover

Seriously, though: is that problem a general problem or only in a few neighborhoods?

Only in certain neighborhoods like most cities - but thieves do travel and target nice areas. Mayfair/Knightsbridge/Kensington/chelsea areas are flooded with fancy cars and it's the only city I know that leave their 200k cars on the streets - normal for 458s/599s left overnight and sometimes go missing.

This is the second 124 stolen in a month:

Oh crap, now I've gotten scared. I'd explode if they'd steal my 500E.

This week I'm going to see to some sort of tracking. And a camera!

There is a "report" of German state-television "ZDF" floating around on youtube, whos topic was IIRC "modern alarmsystems and GPS tracking"... and guess what cars they showed in this report? 2 or 3 500E's that have been stolen by polish poeple.
Tactic IIRC was they steel it with a trailer (so forget any alarm system and immobilizers -they don't care) and then they park the stolen car a few weeks near the boarder in the Berlin area and then picking it up with "concealed" trailers, means trailers with a "cape" around them.
To bad i can't find it anymore, searching for it since a year or so, was viewing it on youtube back in 2009.

I have researched car security systems during my bachelor degree (thesis in new automotive security system). I can say that there is no alarm system that cannot be overcome. Former Daimler CEO Prof.Schrimpf had his armoured W220 S600 stolen in Stuttgart, car was never recovered although it had GPS tracking and was Armoured !!

The tracking system can be found and removed, alarm systems are short circuited, doors opened without breaking windows nor locks. cars can be simply put into steel/metal containers and GPS signal wouldn't be available.

a stolen 500E in Germany which was recovered was stolen just for its trunk lid and rear seat bench !!! the 500E specific parts were not stolen !?

welcome to the Euro...

Now you're really frightening Jelmer. @JB , like you said it's insured.

Yep, if they want to steal it they'll steal it!

Insured, my ass. If I drive this car into a tree or it gets stolen, I'll have to pay it back to my company, at once. Meaning, no car, but much debt.

I've had one break-in, a while back in my previous car. They stole my Becker car radio, wouldn't be worth more than 10€ for them, but they did break window, costing me big time $$$.

Call me an asshole, a nazi, a fruitcake, whatever, but I firmly believe that people who STEAL should be shot. Causing so much trouble, pain, money, etc, for such a low selfish gain? Bah. Can't get lower than that.

And yes, this thread has really awoken me, and I *will* think of something. Even if it's only to hurt the burglars.

I like the countries with laws that cut off the hands of thieves...unfortunately, no matter where you live these days, even here in the peaceful, bucolic, back-country hills of CT, folks will still try to take what you have.

Man Bing....is it really that bad where you are? You rent or own?

Nah! Hit and miss really - of course if you leave valuable stuff in view then you might as well leave it unlocked to save u a smashed window, but this is in any city I expect. I'm really more concern about having to clean the car more often, UV damage and insurance cost . (Not being locked up the premium goes up by 30%) And as mentioned earlier, to a certain extent, 124s can be a target for parts but I'm not losing sleep over it.

I live in and own a appartment ( or as we say Flat)

The W124 is still 4th on the list of most stolen cars in Germany, Diesel models in particular.
Mostly stolen by you know who for parts.
