WANTED WTB: SLS regulator valve

Hello.

I have to replace the SLS regulator valve. The excisting valve is marked R124 328 00 31, but that PN doesn't come up in the EPC.
PN 202 320 02 58 is comming up.

The valves functionality must be confirmed, please.

Thanks

Hi Arnt,

Yes, this is the correct part number. The valve is the same valve as used on a wide variety of SLS systems (including my 560SEL and SEC, and E500) and has been superseded to that 202 part number. In the US this part (through parts.com) is around USD $300 with a list price of ~$USD 420 from MBUSA.

I am leaving in 30 minutes to go to the junkyard down in Houston, where there is a wrecked but largely intact E420. I will try to get the SLS valve from this car for you (no promises) which will likely cost me $25-30 USD used (I recently obtained a spare valve (the same valve) from a 560SEL at this same wrecking yard).

Cheers,
Gerry

Wow - that was a fast response! :D

That sounds great Gerry, it could be a good one, unless the car has far above 160-190kmiles.
Here in Morepay it goes for $750 new from an indy aftermarket vendor, so it's definitely worth a try.

Ciao

No, the car only has something around 100K miles, so it's not too worn out and the SLS valve should be OK. I can check the instrument cluster as it's sitting in the trunk removed from the dashboard of the car. The car is raised up so it's pretty easy to get underneath to do this work to remove it.

I am leaving my house in 5 minutes to get there by 0930, before it gets too hot (even now it's 82 degrees Fahrenheit outside at 0830...).

This 560SEL (which is located very close in the yard to the E420) has never had the trunk opened so I am finally determined today to break it open (after trying 2-3 times previously with only small hand tools). Today I bring a small crowbar for more leverage....

Did you consider asking a Forum member perhaps to buy it new for you for $300 + shipping (probably another $12-15 or so) and send to you in Norway?

Cheers,
Gerry

FYI. The E420 was never offered with SLS in the USA. I heard of *one* E420 in USA with SLS, and I didn't believe it until I got the VIN and checked the option codes... and yep, it really came with SLS! That car had to be a special/custom order. In Europe, yes, SLS was an option on the .034 chassis.

The car in the salvage yard that Gerry will be visiting today won't have SLS, I guarantee. Then again, I was wrong about the 400ps Hammer motor, so you never know, right?

:tigger:

Ha!! Lets see what the bloke has to say when he gets back with his crow bar:-o:-o

You're right, the E420 didn't have SLS. When I had checked it earlier I was sure it DID have it, but Dave is correct. I REALLY swore it did....so sorry Arnt.

It does have ASR though, and is still fairly complete though getting picked over fast. I did score the stereo amplifiers out of it (still has the late (1994-1995 W124) head unit in the dash.

Crow bar, indeed. I actually brought a small (foot-long) one and I carried it into the wrecking yard inside of my shorts, with the rounded end looped over my belt to secure it. The 560SEL's trunk has been locked shut for months, and despite many tries with screwdrivers and the like I've never been able to get into it (nor have several other people who have obviously tried to). Finally I was determined that TODAY was the day I'd get in there. So I pried and pried, and still that damned latch held fast. Finally I pried up enough to make space to get my 8mm ratcheting closed/box-end wrench onto the ends of the plate on the trunk lid that holds the latch, and removed the two bolts. Voila ! The trunk magically opened ! And there wasn't much in there (a bit of a letdown) other than the tail light holders and ... the Hirschmann and a dirty spare wheel/tire.

Of the 560SEL, (which I got the SLS valve from a few weeks ago), I scored the vacuum pump from the trunk, front window regulators, front door vacuum actuators (both in good working condition), rear tail light inside pieces (the driver's side tail light bulb holder of my 560SEL is inexplicably very slightly cracked on one place, so it took me 30 seconds to replace it with the nice spare one from the wrecked SEL), the Hirschmann (as mentioned) and a few other miscellaneous & sundry W/C126 items.

Arnt, you can have the spare 560SEL SLS valve that I have, seeing as I falsely raised your hopes, if you want it, for the $30 that I paid for it. I can't guarantee it works 100%, but when I removed it from the car it was dry on the outside, and then plenty of hydraulic fluid leaked when I loosened the fittings. PM me if interested; otherwise we can order you a new one and I'll send it to you (or I can give it to your relatives who live in my neighborhood). Other thing I can do Arnt is to go to another local wrecking yard here in Houston that has a few SECs in the yard, and score one that way. They are more expensive and not so friendly to me so it will probably be on the order of USD $50-60 but that is still much less than a new one via parts.com. I can blitz down there at lunchtime this coming week on my motorcycle and do this, if you're not in a huge hurry.

Let me know what you want to do. Sorry about the false alarm with the E420....

Cheers,
Gerry

P.S. As I mentioned, I snagged the vacuum pump out of the 560SEL, which has superseded to the same pump that the E500E uses, according to the EPC. WOW, that pump list price is $440, discounted via parts.com to $317. Glad I snagged it....

I'm in the midst of parting a 93 500E, SLS works A OK, minus having to add a quart every 500 or so miles to deal with the leak @ the pump!

Let me know if you might be interested.

how can you tell, if the sls regulator valve is not functional?

Hello.

In my case did the rear end elevate higher and higher, and it didn't lower to normal/preset height. After bleeding the system and other checks, I disconnected the arm on the valve and moved it manually, even outside normal operating range, rotated it etc.. without any help. So I took it off and opened it for curiosity and to study the function and investigate for possible wear points on the internals. I have mentioned that in this thread: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?1028-SLS-adjustment
I promissed to come back with an explanation, but I simply haven't had time yet. What I can say so far, is that it is no point to open it to chek out the conditions, because non of the internals are available spares anyway.

Thanks for checking, Gerry. And many thanks for the offer, but you don't need to give away your own spare valve to me. Jono does also have one valve available now. I have also found a almost new valve locally, but it's not available in 2 weeks (it's on a wrecked car not released from the insurance yet).

Thanks

Arnt,

Let me know how I can help you.

I just now came back from a party at my neighbor's, where my Norwegian neighbors were present. I spent quite a bit of time talking with both of them (husband and the wife). I believe they are aware of your relatives having moved here, but have not met them (also there are a number of FMC More-payians here...). There are 3-4 Norwegian families who have moved to The Woodlands very recently, and about 35 More-payian families here now.

I will contact your relatives very shortly. Tomorrow I take my family to Galveston Island to for a quick holiday at the Gulf of Mexico...

Cheers,
Gerry
