I am looking for a well sorted/maintained 1994 or 1995 E420, to replace mine that was ruined by a paint & body shop.

I'd prefer low(er) mileage & black w/ tan interior though I am open to other color combinations.

Please let me know what you have available or if you know of anyone who might have one available.

Thanks -

it's a long story... I took it to a feller I knew who had a paint & body shop. I've seen many of the cars he painted and was impressed with his work. We made a deal for him to completely strip the vehicle & repaint and I would de-trim the vehicle & then reassemble. I left town and returned a few months later to retrieve the vehicle & it looked awesome. After a few months the paint started to crack badly - all over & I discovered he did not use PPG as agreed and that he did not strip the vehicle as we had agreed.

He then agreed to repaint the vehicle. I again had to remove all the trim before leaving town for several months & when returned to retrieve the vehicle the same thing happened after a few months, only much worse. I then stripped the entire vehicle myself. I had it down to beautiful gleaming bare metal before leaving town again, whereupon he was supposed to repaint the entire vehicle with PPG. I was out of town for approximately 8 months. When I returned, I discovered that he had not only failed to paint the vehicle, but left it in the desert sun.

Then a series of failed promises to complete the job over a long period of time ensued. Finally, one day he said he was ready to paint the vehicle and wanted my help so I went to his shop and what I saw stunned me. The vehicle was all rusted b/c he failed to apply epoxy primer, all the leather was completely dried out and badly cracked, the wood trim was completely ruined, tires were flat and dry rotted, weatherstripping needed replacement, battery was missing, sunroof was completely inoperative and misaligned, the car interior, trunk and engine compartment were full of sand, etc. I told him to refund my money, which he did. I then retrieved my E420 and left. That was several years ago and I miss my E420 more and more every day.

I realize I could repair my E420, but the cost to do so would far exceed the value - hence my WTB post.

I was contacted on another M/B forum by someone purporting to have a 77K original mi '95 E420. The detailed photos he sent me were absolutely perfect and every known E420 issue had already been addressed. I knew it was too good to be true and after prolonged communication with this miscreant it became very clear he was a scam artist. Not only that but after several days of communicating with him I was contacted by a site administrator who told me that member been previously banned for the same behavior.

I am completely dejected, as I have been looking for a good one for years and I briefly thought I had finally found a rare gem.

C'est la vie and my search for a good '94 to '95 E420 continues.

Wrong colors, no options, but it looks very clean in the photos. California car since new, no issues on Autocheck.

gsxr: Thanks, I saw that one and I'm thinking about it. I guess I'm being a bit picky , but the mileage is a bit high for my liking and it's the wrong color, as you said, but it might be a good one.

FWIW: I'm much more concerned about overall condition, than the odometer reading. I have a few 124's with 200-300kmi on them that are in excellent condition (other than the paint, which is always the weak point). The engines last forever, and everything else can be repaired/rebuilt if needed.

For the Polar White in CA, I'd start by asking for a lot more photos. It looks quite good in the few photos available.

gsxr: Yes, I'm aware of W124 greatness - I've owned an E420 since 1996. I agree with your assessment, and it does indeed look good. I realize that these vehicles are becoming rare, but I'm just not sure I can stomach a white E420. I will continue to think about it. --- Thanks.

500AMM: Once multiple paint jobs fail in such a manner, the only way to prevent a new paint job from failure is to strip the vehicle down to bare metal. The vehicle has had 3 complete paint jobs as well as multiple attempts at paint correction throughout its life. There were simply too many layers of paint, though none of the paint work done on the vehicle were due to collisions.

My E420 is located in another city where I maintain a secondary residence, & at this point I am considering going out there to perform an assessment on the vehicle to see if I can justify repairing the vehicle since I'm not entirely sure I'll be able to find another well sorted E420 in the time I have available, as I need to have another vehicle by March '25 at the latest. Other than the paint job and repairing/replacing the leather, I can do most of the work myself... but the search will continue for a good example.
