Hi! Now that I am firmly in my fourth decade of life, I would like to fulfill one of my dreams that I had while in HS - to drive a 500E.

Ideally I would find One with less than 100K miles. I am located in Northern California and would be willing to pay a very fair price for one in excellent condition - to be used as a weekend car.

Thank you for any leads.

Welcome to the forum! Most E500E's for sale nationwide are posted in the classified section of the forum. If you keep an eye on those it will help you find the right car. Also, if you go back for the last 6-12 months and read up on the various cars for sale it will give you an idea of what's out there. Finding a non-black car will be a significant issue as more than half imported to USA were Pearl Black (paint code 199). The Wiki has an article which shows the number of each color imported in case you are looking for a particular color.

:welcome4:

Thanks for the warm welcome gang,

I remember when these first came out ---- I thought the MY1994 facelifted ones were more attractive.
However, 20+ years on, much to my surprise, I find the earlier 91-93 ones to be more attractive to my eyes with the more prominent grille and the black strips on the bumpers!

A 500E would fit nicely next to the Porsche 993 I purchased a few years ago and have been working on ---- the pair was my dream garage back then!

Welcome to the forum. Keep after it and keep in touch with the 500eboard. Don't be in a big hurry to land the first one you see UNLESS it's close to a 100 pointer. Then have your check book at the ready. The good cars are not for sale long.

Good Luck

How far are you willing to travel? There is silver one with black interior 96K miles 1993 500E for around $18

Hi gsxr - Im not able to private message you because the system says that your user ID is not accepting private messages.

Can you email me again? Thanks.

I would buy the best example you can afford regardless of color.

I own a 199 car, and dislike black. But I love my 036! Thanks Dave for pestering me to go drive it.

Like you, I did not want pearl black. I also wanted a 1993, but would consider condition over color and year. I did not want pearl black, but looked at one, passed on it, but a friend bought it. I ended up with a 93 Smoke Silver with Cream Beige, 1 owner car! I waited and got what I wanted. Good luck and I hope you find what you are looking for!

Funny, I got mine as a "40th birthday present" to myself. And like you, I had a certain car in mind. Hold out for it. I had been looking for mine for several years -- it just so happened that it found me, just before my 40th.

Cheers,

In my estimation, this is a personal process of compromise and priority.

If your top priority is exterior color followed by mileage and lastly by interior color, great. Run with it. Just keep in mind that you may pass some beautiful examples up. Since we are not at the 25 year import mark, just eliminating the 199 reduces the number of possibilities by 1/2. Given 1993 models are now 23 years old, this means an example with less than 100K miles would have been driven on average < 4,350 miles -- so this eliminates all cars used as a daily driver (which this car being a sedan lends itself to be especially as it lowered in value with age). Factoring in an interior specification, this universe gets smaller.

All of the above does not take into account cars which have been destroyed in accidents and others which have become donor cars.

I'm a huge fan of a lot of other colors than 199 but, at the end of the day, I found a pearl (black) and got it -- 1 owner, < 90K miles, gray interior

Good luck!

Oh how sobering. :-). I used the "I turned 40" line several years ago when I purchased a Porsche 993, but I think the search for that was easier - most specimens were not used to the extent that .036s were and there is more supply.

Question - once the 25 year EPA rule lifts, is it still problematic to get the car not just into the USA but also California/CARB?

Non-USA cars do not have the Check Engine light (or Diagnostic Module which controls the CEL), and this alone can cause hassles. The PO of my 92 lived in CA and had to get a letter from MBNA to pacify the emissions testing facility. The other issue is that non-US cars tend to be short on documentation (no CarFax or AutoCheck records) and they almost never have a nice thick folder of maintenance / service records either... especially auction cars... and you end up with the risk of paying a premium for a low odometer reading that may be false. Then of course there's the difficulty obtaining photos of the undercarriage from overseas cars, to avoid rustbuckets. IMO you are much better off buying a car you can personally inspect prior to purchase.

If you really want to stick to non-black cars (and I share your sentiments, btw!) you may have to adjust your mileage requirements. Well-maintained higher-mile cars can be equal or better than low-mile garage queens. It depends if you are concerned about investment/resale potential, or prefer something you can actually drive and enjoy.

These cars look great in nearly every color they were offered in. Just sayin. And I've owned one in 4 different colors. Enjoy your search!

GSXR is totally correct. He was very helpful when I found my 1993 Smoke Silver/Cream Beige. Thanks again GSXR!!! The car was one owner well maintained with just under 152,000 on the clock. It passed the PPI performed at the local MB dealer that serviced the car. I bought it and drove 9 hours home. I looked at 3 cars before I bought this one. Hold out for the right car, it is worth the wait!

Well ---- I can now say I'm super excited! I bought Jeff0093's Signal Red Car!
After transaction logistics clear, it will be en-route to me via transporter --- thank you Jeff0093 !!!

WOW. You snagged a unicorn there. Dibs on the Neez wheels if you ever want to sell 'em, lol. Congratulations!!

:deniro:

Thank you! Yeah the wheels .... ummmm .... they are really really really really sharp. I'll keep them for now! :-)
I've been voraciously consuming 500e board content for the past several weeks -----

If I ever am able to find a set of 18" Rial M800 ARCs, that would be another unicorn finding! ....

Tough day letting this one go, but it's going to a good home (most important to me). The combo of loosing my storage and the idea of down sizing to one summer car won out in the long run, I also sold my 2002tii on bring a trailer two weeks ago. Hopefully you guys will let me hang around here and help me figure out my next ride.

The wheels are NEEZ, not Evos.
