Re: FS in Richmon BC Canada

Looks good. I'll be in Richmond BC in a couple of days. Must resist...

Being a 1994 model (probably 1993 build date?) it's not yet 25 years old so would not be easy to import into the US. However, since it's a Canadian market car, I think (but I'm not certain) that it would be far easier to import than if it were a Japanese or Euro market car.

There were only a handful with black interior. 5 in USA, 7 in Canada, eh.

EDIT: VIN = WDBEA36EXRC116694

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Let's not forget that the price of $19,800 is in Canadian dollars. At current exchange rates, that's about $15K in USD. And 138kkm --> about 85kmi. Based on this, i won't be surprised if the craigslist posting got pulled because the car sold right away, or that the seller was inundated with inquiries and is thinking about increasing the price.

I think the seller is a guy called Eddy with a shop called "Flying Tiger" here in Richmond. He is well respected among the local Benz crowd.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Being a Richmond BC car, I don't see rust being a big problem. Richmond, a suburb of Vancouver, doesn't usually see a lot of snow (with this year's crazy weather being a big exception). And it rains so much that on the rare occasions that salt is used, it's washed away pretty quickly.

I grew up there and never had a speck of rust on any of my cars. That includes 80s Hondas that rust to pieces in other climates.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Yeah, rust is one of those questions I'd be asking about with my money out and the car in the air. Which means I'd be there. Already.

Hi Guys,
been watching, and reading all the great info on this website.

The seller is a very reputable local Benzer. :)
And it's been always garage stored.
Car is going to Chicago, from what I've been told.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Melville is correct. :applause:
Richmond is part of Vancouver, only 5 minute drive across the bridges.
Snow is rare here, except for the past couple of years.
Rust is not an issue; pretty mild here similar to Seattle weather.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Is the car officially sold? The listing is still active on AutoTrader.

So this is a 94, not 25 years old to be exempt from USA DOT/EPA requirements.

If it's going to Chicago, where's the magic to get it through customs?

Is someone throwing huge dollars to import this E500 as a grey market car, or are Canadian market E500's already Federally qualified?

It would be interesting to find out how it gets imported if it is going to Chicago.

Can someone local to the sale find out the details?

PS: I just sent an inquiry to the dealer, and asked if it was still for sale, and if he could share the VIN for a history check

Canadian cars are generally the same as North American cars for emissions/etc, the primary difference being the speedomoeter / odometer (maybe headlights too). As a bonus, Canadian cars have a USA-style VIN format so it doesn't raise red flags at DMV. The car should have the yellow emissions decal (see pic attached), if so, there is far less hassle dealing with emissions stuff. Overall these cars are much easier to import to USA... but I think there are still hoops to jump through.

I would love to know the exact process - paperwork, certifications required, parts swapping?, total cost...

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Agree with gsxr - because this model was also sold in the us in 94, and meets NA standards, it shouldn't be an issue importing. I imported a 94 Canadian spec LR defender last year so it can be done. Sounds like a great deal.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Passenger vehicles 21 years and older are exempt by EPA provided they have the original motor.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

There was not long ago silver on custom interior imported 1993 500e imported and sold in chicago also so yes it can be done

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

I don't believe Cdn approved motor vehicles imported into the US is an issue, but importing, say for example a Japanese JDM from Japan via Canada could be problematic.
I recall 15+ years ago, when a colleague of mine was asking all of us to go down to the local dealerships to buy brand new SUVs off the lot. Bank drafts were provided to the buyers to go buy these SUVs and once the papers, titles were exchanged, these SUVs would then go straight to a warehouse in Richmond where the SUVs were then signed over with a sign-over bonus of $1000 commission. These SUVs were then transferred across into Blaine and re-sold to Americans demanding these SUVs ( due to high demand at that time). Dealerships up here got really **ssed days after finding out their SUVs had left the country, and of course, no servicing work for them any more on these vehicles that have migrated south. On the new CDN vehicles heading south, I recall the only changes needed were the speedo display (converting KM to MILES).

So this is a 94, not 25 years old to be exempt from USA DOT/EPA requirements.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

The seller is a tad flakey. I emailed him this morning to arrange for a viewing. He told me "how about tomorrow? I am busy today". He did not state a time. I asked for a phone chat today and left my phone number. He did not phone but emailed 6 hours later to say "sure". I emailed him to call anytime this evening. He writes back: "sorry, I just sold the car 5 minutes ago". Never got to speak to him or even know his name. I complained about the fact he didn't have time to show the car and yet sold he sold it on the same day. He said the guy bought it sight unseen. Frustrated!

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

My old 1993 300D was also imported into Chicago from Canada but when it was 4 years old back in 1997

Congratulations, and thanks for posting the VIN, I'm attaching the data card for your E500

What's your location, did the car come to Chicago as an earlier post speculated? If in the USA can you describe the import process to us?

Thanks and Good Luck...

I did not buy the car. I communicated with the seller/Eddie and got a bunch of videos, pictures but have decided not to go with the car... As far as I know he said the car is going to Seattle, WA.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Hey guys,

So I am the mystery buyer of this car. I have been doing a lot of work these past 5 days getting everything sorted. First thing I did when I saw this post was call the owner we spoke over the phone he sent me several excellent videos and photos and then I immediately sent him a deposit to let him know I was serious. I then contacted everyone from border patrol in Canada to Mercedes Benz Corporate to obtain all of the necessary documents in order to get the car across the border. I reached out to a friend in seattle which was going to bring the car across the border for me and then I was going to have it shipped from his location saving me over a grand on shipping. That I found out was not an option as I read online. There were several misleading sources. I however with the help of my lovely wife was able to make sure the car was in fact able to cross the border. The only thing I may need to change in Chicago is the speedometer but I have a friend working for the DMW here so It should not be an issue. The car meets all EPA and DOT requirements. I received the golden ticket from Mercedes Benz today which is the letter of compliance allowing me to bring the car over.

Thanks to GSXR for posts of the sticker locations on the car!
Thanks to daantjie for posting the car !!
Thanks to everyone on here that has been very helpful and informative.

There is too much to go over at the moment and I am leaving Chicago at 9:00 am to Seattle where I will take a bus to Richmond BC and then bring the car back to my friends where I will have it shipped back to Chicago. I have not set up a shipping company yet but I am in no rush. If anyone knows of a fairly priced open carrier please let me know. I have seen quotes from 650 to 800. A lot of mixed reviews.

The car is owned by a Mercedes/AMG legend in my books, Eddy Lai http://www.flyingtiger.ca/ Ill let you guys read up on him.

Cheers Mark !

Re: Sale pending: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Black, 138kkm, $20k (Richmond, BC, Canada)

Congrats Mark!! and Welcome

It looks like you got a great car. Smoke Silver is really a nice color especially with the black interior.

Your past with old Benz's kind of sounds like mine. Back in 77 my wife bugged me to buy her a 1957 190SL. We paid $6.5K for it and I was on my way. I was very impressed on how a 20 year old car could feel so solid. It drove so smoothly and did not have one rattle. Soon things started breaking and I was forced for lack of $$ to tear it apart. I rebuilt most of it myself except the trans. Over the next 11years working on this car I developed a love/hate relationship with Mercedes. Long story short in 88 sold it for $19K and it was on a plane to Japan the next day. From there it got worse. Around 90 I picked up a 1964 220Seb Euro in Polar White/Black interior 4 speed stick on the floor and the one piece Euro headlights. After some work it drove great but the interior stitching on the leather rotted out and the seats fell apart. Again not enough $$ to re-upholster it so I sold it. I still regret that. Anyway then came a 67 230 Fintail with a blown motor which I rebuilt and drove for about 5 years. Next was an 84 500SL Euro for my wife who got bored with it and moved to a Cadillac. We still have it after putting 100K miles on it it sets all wrapped up in the driveway for the last 4 years or so. Then I got an 86 300E with 30K miles on it drove it up to 115K and sold it after spending a small fortune on 17" wheels and lowering it. It looked great but was a slug in the speed dept.

After finding Neil's aka "Need to Speed" website and scouring it for a few years and looking and driving no less than 5 of these cars during that time I finally got what I had been lusting over for a long time, my beloved 1993 500E 040 which I have owned now for 12-1/2 years and have never looked back. Absolutely the best car I have ever owned.

Now you are at that point with your new to you E500. All I can say is, I wish you the best of luck with your new ride and hope you come to love and appreciate the fine car you have acquired. Remember to " Enjoy the Journey"

Hope to hear an see more of you here on the board.

Take Care
