Contemplating the Cabriolets

Ahhhh - thanks! Strange that the next FIVE bidders (down to $14,500) all didn't want it after the winner welched.

:scratchchin:

Allegedly, I say this because it did not happen to me in any of my BaT auctions, if the winning bidder bails, you can:

  1. Relist
  2. Go to #2 bidder, #3 bidder, etc., etc.
  3. Walk away and get a refund
When I sold my 220SEb I was freaking out because the buyer hadn't responded to my emails four days after the auction close. I knew they were a foreign buyer but that was about it, as BaT won't share any details other than the buyer's contact information. They assured me that things would work out and that I should just chill. That tells me this occurs more often than one might expect. They did confirm the three options listed above, but said it was quite rare for someone to bail, especially when they had a chunk of change already spent on the auction fee.

I think I got an email from the buyer's son, explaining that "Dad" was on holiday in Italy and didn't have access to email and that he would follow up with me on Monday, which he did.

Still a bit of a nail biter.

I just wonder how many second highest bidders still have interest a week after the hammer falls. The BaT people told me they generally won't give out information or drop to the second bidder until a week has passed and the high bidder is unresponsive. That's a long time.

This feels like a $11-12K car this time last year.

I was going to call that a $10K car. Then I saw the price, LOL.

I didn't see any comments in the auction from UHT. Bummer.

Nice looking Cab on BaT

Richard Ball's red cabriolet is still for sale, too, if you're in the market for a flood car that's been "restored". He's got it on Facebook now for $29k OBO.

Yes. We mustn't forget Dick Pelota's example

Isn't she lovely?

Previously listed on Elroy's site for 109 large.

While I don't agree with the re-color choices herein, this is a great example of, to me, the best wheel/tire combo ever.
I count 8 different rings within the cap/wheel/whitewall.
The last year of that combination.

That’s a Beauty!!

While I'll agree that the cabriolets are stunning cars, especially in green and tan (mushroom?), I love the coupes more.

Beautiful car. Already at $45k on the first day of the auction.

I've done a water pump on a W112 300SE - not pleasant and very, very expensive. It's what convinced me to sell my 300SE.

Would you buy a car where they ground off the VIN from the frame rail?
Even though the VIN verifies that it is not a cabrio, the mystery persists. That is if you believe the VIN plate...
Crank windows on a 112?

There should also be a VIN stamped on the inside fender arch in the engine compartment as well as on the firewall under the insulation.

I've seen plenty of 111 and 112 coupes that had the tops sawed off and were converted to cabrios. Then they bill them as original factory cabs, in a greedy attempt to get as much money as they can. Most of them are junk, mainly because it was a hack job and the car was not properly reinforced. Generally, a knowledgeable PPI by someone familiar with these cars will tell whether it was a factory cabrio ($$$$) or a roof-hack-job ($) in about 10 minutes.

The sad thing is, that an original factory cabrio, as well as an original factory coupe (without the top hacked off) are both going to be worth far more than a coupe that was "transformed" into a cabrio.

What has astounded me is that over the past 5 years or so, even the "pedestrian" coupes and cabrios have started radically climbing in value (the ones with the 220 and 250 engines, let alone the M189 3.0 and M130 2.8 inline sixes). IMHO one of these cars is not worth owning unless it has the M116 3.5-liter engine.

Hate to disagree with you Gerry,
but after driving both a 220 SEb coupe (manual 4-speed) and a 280 SE 3.5 coupe that was hacked into a convertible earlier this year (both not mine of course), I totally understand why they have that value.
Both are not race cars of course, but both are perfect cruisers imho. Smooth and totally relaxing, a real time machine!
Good condition 220SEb´s are between 30k and 40k in Germany. If you consider the great look and built quality (especially the interior  ) nda quite high parts and repair costs many of this cars already have into them (think RUST, but also leather and wood, chrome, engine and automatic gearbox if choosen), this price is very fair in my eyes.
And if the car is in good condition, you can absolutely daily drive it.

I'm not saying they're not good cars. I'm just saying that my opinon & philosophy is to always get the highest end car offered, for maximum enjoyment and also long-term appreciation.

They are parting out a cabriolet because of head gasket and engine harness. Somebody rescues it, please.

The online reviews for the mechanic who's selling that car are pure gold.

Seems to enjoy yelling at his customers. One even claims to have something thrown at them. lol

I checked the reviews and I saw mostly good ones with a few negative ones but the owner addressed them from their perspectives. I don't know if they are really that bad. For this Cabriolet, I think that the owner gave up the car when quoted the cost to fix the harness and the head gasket. The harness is easy and cheap for a 1994, but the head gasket of course could be costly.

Jono of Blue Ridge might have the obligation to save this car. One of his gangs can, at least.

On BaT, this would be something like an $18K car.

Let's see what kind of money it will pull at the new place...

Only bad thing about it is the color. Ugh. Otherwise, it's got al the boxes checked as far as options.

"The selling dealer purchased this SL600 in 2019 and has put about 50 miles on it."

Flip or flop?

Brown top, brown guts would break up that Travertine nicely, I think.

EDIT:
I missed that this one did go through BaT last year. RNM. Very poor bidding.

The paint color isn't a Travertine-esty. But that interior color just doesn't work. Beige Overload! Black interior, or Brazil, would have been a nice contrast. Seats look worn on this for 57k.

I know Greg at BMI. I have bought parts from him in the past and just purchased some items from the cab. He is old school and capable. The owner of the cab has another nicer one so he is parting the listed one.

Speaking of R129s, I recently bought a 95 and need some help with a few things. 129 drivers please see my latest post in my owners thread.

Very nice. I remember the first time I saw the dash on one of these. It was at Drew Tibken's shop and had just been refinished. It took my breath away, and it wasn't from the fumes.

Sold for just over $100K, all in.

The seller had to be on pins and needles on this one. 3-4 hours before the end it was only at $57k. Unusual paint job and a lot of detail items kept the price down, I believe. Sad that there were things like knobs and such that were easy fixes they didn't address prior to the sale. How difficult would it have been to repair the manual choke?

Dan

R171 is not a bad looking little car. Proportions are kinda cute, like a puppy.
