I like the way, @jhodg5ck, the video starts with a “click” and then we see an analog mechanical meter! So very Wes Anderson of you! It’s starting to feel as if I never have owned this car, but this little video received from @jhodg5ck of testing on the road has provided a spark. Hope she gets back to factory numbers. At this point nothing short of AMG perfection is expected....
Can you explain for some of us dummies (ok this one dummy) what we are looking at? We are measuring psi of .... of backpressure? how does one get a backpressure reading? Is there some sensor in a bung thing taht needs to be fitted?Jono is doing it right. That is the ONLY way to properly test for plugged catalysts. I use the same method. Based on the numbers, the engine was probably producing semi-normal torque off-idle, but at high RPM it was probably making stock 5.0L power, if that much.

Gotcha!Yes - measuring exhaust backpressure ahead of the catalysts. Either a bung has to be added, or the O2 sensor can be temporarily replaced with a an adapter fitting. Normal should be under about 3psi maximum at any RPM, at full throttle. Full load is required, can't test revving in Park (well, unless the cats are almost totally plugged, in which case the car would also be undriveable).
Jono, any idea what is causing the cat failures, besides age? Is the failure mode usually the same as on this car, increased backpressure, but otherwise OK (no dents, no rattles from the substrate breaking apart, etc)?... now searching for a Nice set of cats that would be appropriate for a car like this....a LOT of 119 catalysts are failing these days...similar to M120's IME.
I am sure it will be done right when it is finished (no pressure). BTW I am allergic to Cats, the furry kind though, not the kind that you are in search of at the moment.now searching for a Nice set of cats that would be appropriate for a car like this....a LOT of 119 catalysts are failing these days...similar to M120's IME.
I hadn't thought of that... but the Leistung setup would be near top of my list for that car, since the factory cats are NLA. Full system though, crate up the the AMG muffler in storage...@JAB12 @jhodg5ck — out of curiosity, if you have to replace the catalysts, is it possible to use the very nice front section and catalysts that @5thscaleracer has put together for 5.0 liter cars?
@JAB12 @gsxr I feel badly for trying to convince @JAB12 to spend yet more money ..... unless you hate money to begin with.I hadn't thought of that... but the Leistung setup would be near top of my list for that car, since the factory cats are NLA. Full system though, crate up the the AMG muffler in storage...
I tend to agree. I'd like for this car to run quiet though. (as in 'regular guy in an unassuming old Benz').@JAB12 I guess its either age related failure or the ignition issues that everyone had cause the cells to crumble and block the cats.
New is of course NLA, don't see an issue in running high quality aftermarket as even used ones from a E500E is a gamble.
How about Leistung font section + Leistung catalyst + new OE center resonator + new OE muffler?I tend to agree. I'd like for this car to run quiet though. (as in 'regular guy in an unassuming old Benz').
I have enough grumble in my little frog faced coupes...
Thank you @M104-AMG appreciate the lead. There's a gentleman that can open-up cats and replace the substrates with HQ cats that also pass CARB SMOG. I'll see if I can dig-up his contact info.
I am buying a model of one "particular" E500 tomorrowHot wheels released these recently. Already have become hard to find and 10x priced on secondary market. My son will have fun with the 1:64 for now.
I bought 6 or 8 of these a couple months back from USA! I figured it would be my retirement fund when they go NLA, like the real dealHot wheels released these recently. Already have become hard to find and 10x priced on secondary market. My son will have fun with the 1:64 for now.
