10 CD changer finally died after 23 years...

My car thanked me when recently turning 160K miles ...CD changer bit it and killed the battery overnite.

Hooked up and charged the battery and could hear the changer cycling thru the CDs every few minutes. ...and it wouldn't spit out the cartridge. Oh well. Not complaining...I haven't done really jack to the cars in literally years except drive it and put gas in it.

Before I send it to Becker for repair...anyone else have this happen and a ball park on price to fix?

I have a receipt from the previous owner where he had his CD changer repaired about 5 years ago through a place in Florida. Cost was about $450 (ouch). There is also a copy of an email he sent to a repair place that says in the process of changing CDs it hands up, goes to the rear, and pushing the eject for a cartridge, a motor inside starts and runs continuously and nothing happens. Eventually the device shuts off and doesn't show up in the mode setting. It did it once before and after a few days started working again. There is another document saying the customer took it apart and the worm gear is out of unit.

I don't know if this has any similarities to your issue, but I'm passing it on in case it sheds some light on your situation. Good luck!

This reminds me. I need to buy some CDs! I got rid of all my CDs in my last international move.

Dan posted a thread with a nifty conversion to a different CD changer that will replace the original 10-disc... IIRC, Becker won't repair the 10-disc unit anymore?

...Becker won't repair the 10-disc unit anymore

Yep I sent them all my components to be refurbished and they would not even look at the CD changer. They told me that they no longer had any replacement parts and were not expecting to receive anymore from Becker.

:rip:

Yeah, they won't touch the 10 disc. I bought two spares and took them all apart myself, and they basically are just bad designs. All the little plastic gears crumbled, and everything was super complex, and sorta fragile. I don't recommend messing with the 10 disc. Let me find my thread on how I fixed this without cutting a single wire.

Thanx guys ! Bummer they won't fix them anymore. I'm glad I checked here. That was exactly my symptoms....gears be a running but nuttin' happenin' out back and not showing up on the head unit.

...I'm sure there is a market, a small one, to keep these cars all original(?) Oh well. I got a nice paperweight out of it I guess.

I should prolly have the head unit fitted for an external cable instead and Dbried, thank you ....looks like what you did is the trick !

Contacted Becker to see if I could get parts and fix myself...Tom there said they can and have always repaired the changers, $450 .

Can either send in mine or buy a re-furbed one for same price.

Just a PSA...
