FOR SALE 1991 500E, Silver Repaint/Gray, 167kkm, UK auction (Selby, North Yorkshire, UK)

No affiliation. USA-spec car that was apparently exported from USA to UAE, then to UK. Originally 199 Pearl Black, resprayed silver. Note it has the wrong headlights, they are standard 124, and for LHT (UK/Japan). Maybe it's me but this car looks like it has far more than 167kkm (104kmi). Underhood pics look like it will end up on the high side of GVZ's £10k law. @cascade would have a field day with it.

Datacard:

1991 MERCEDES-BENZ (W124) 500E

KEY FACTS
  • This W124-generation Mercedes-Benz 500E is a generously specified example of the marque’s modern classic ‘super-saloon’, offered in impressive condition throughout.
  • Under the bonnet sits a naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8, producing around 322bhp, driving the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission.
  • Originally a US-market example, this left-hand drive 550E was exported to the UAE in the early 1990s, before being imported into the UK in May 1999. It has benefitted from significant recent investment in mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment.
  • The car has been driven and enjoyed as intended, but evidently well maintained, and the odometer shows 167,228 Kms (103,911 miles) from new.
EQUIPMENT AND FEATURES
  • As evidenced by its build plate, this 500E was originally finished in Black Pearl metallic, but has since been resprayed in Astral Silver metallic. This work is believed to have been done when it was just a few years old to a very high standard, as the seller states there is no sign of the previous colour anywhere.
  • Inside, the cabin is trimmed in grey leather, featuring perforated seat inserts and an extended wood veneer trim pack.
  • It rides on a set of 16-inch eight-hole alloy wheels, shod in brand-new Pirelli Cinturato P7 tyres.
  • The factory specification includes a folding front armrest, electric windows, an electric rear windscreen roller blind, an electric sliding sunroof, headlamp washers and wipers, a Mercedes-Benz-branded cassette stereo, automatic climate control, electric drop-down rear headrests, electrically adjustable heated front seats with two-position driver memory, an electrically adjustable passenger door mirror, and a heated rear windscreen.
  • The car will be accompanied by its service booklet, an extensive folder of maintenance invoices, the V5C, the original first aid kit, a toolkit, a spare wheel, and a wheel brace.
CONDITION
  • The seller is not aware of any bodywork damage. They state that the car is in superb order, with no rusting arches or corrosion.
  • The Astral Silver metallic paintwork was resprayed to correct general age-related blemishes. It is now reported to be in almost immaculate condition, with a couple of stone chips here and there.
    • Stepping inside, the cabin is presented in good shape. The seller notes wear on the driver’s seat bolster, mild wear on the steering wheel, some minor cracks on the wood veneer trims, and that the rear-view mirror is loose so does not always stay in position. There are also stains on the boot carpet and creases on the seats, with slight wear on the passenger-side rear seat base and minor blemishes on the passenger seat base.
  • The seller notes that a slight vibration can be felt through the steering wheel at 70mph, the radio is not functioning, and the air conditioning works but is not cold enough. It is reported that there are no warning lights showing on the dashboard.
  • The car’s last MOT test was conducted on 19 July 2022 at 167,071 Kms resulting in a second-time pass with one advisory to monitor a non-excessive oil leak.
  • The car initially failed due to a non-functional offside repeater, an ABS warning light being illuminated, and poorly adjusted headlamps, however all of these issues have been addressed.
SERVICE HISTORY
  • This 500E’s most recent maintenance was carried out in July 2022 by Selby TVR, Sports and Classics Limited, where technicians replaced the mirror adjuster mechanism and the oil pressure sender unit.
  • Prior to this, a major service was performed at 165,519 Kms, which included the fitment of a new sump gasket, a gearbox oil and filter change, new front suspension top mounts, front brake flexi hoses and replacement pipes, new front brake discs and pads, a four wheel alignment, new front lower ball joint dust covers, brake fluid, a headrest wiring repair, odometer gear diagnosis and replacement, a new nearside rear window regulator, distributor cap, number plates, four new tyres, an air conditioning regas, and new engine oil and filters.
  • Other notable maintenance includes the fitment of a new battery, a full respray, the headlining retrimmed, all the alloy wheels refurbishment, and the replacement of the spark plugs.
SUMMARY
This W124-generation Mercedes-Benz 500E is a handsome and well-maintained example of the marque’s powerful modern classic ‘super-saloon’. Boasting a remarkably versatile combination of potent performance, a luxuriously appointed cabin, and renowned build-quality, it would make an excellent addition to any modern classic collection, and an exciting yet eminently practical companion for spirited weekend drives, long-distance touring, and daily use. In the seller’s own words: “It’s ready to drive and to be used without hesitation”.

Seatbelt over the bolster wear? At least there's another photo without the belt in the way.

More photos coming later, there's a mix of standard and stupid-size photos which the forum won't allow to be uploaded. Have to manually resize, sigh.

Strikes me as a rust bucket. As soon as I saw the rust behind the grill with the bonnet raised, “Britain” jumped into my mind. Car looks like it’s still wet as it sits, the best argument for all weather mats I’ve seen in a while.

:duck:

maw

Rest of the pics. This car looks like it had a rough life.

Ended "Unsold", which I assume is the UK way of saying "Reserve not met".

Is there any way to view the high bid?

AAAAAAAAND, it's back on Collecting Cars - someone thinks that potential buyers have the memory of a retarded snail, or they are hoping to find a new entrant to the market who doesn't know how to use the internet.

Collecting Cars

And, as I am in the market for a V8 124, I saw this car on Car & Classic auctions prior to it appearing on Collecting Cars

I agree it does not look to be in the best of condition. Have you seen the nautical blue one on Car and Classic? It's been for sale for ages.

There isn't much to go on for a forum PunchList and the plates are hidden. I really like the interior though. Unusual to see a non-leather one.
