Hey guys
EU inspection carried out today, 20.11.2019, and EU Approved for 2 new years
PS: Car is now winter stored nice and dry, and can be helpful with storage until spring
First of all, read the text, and please see the pictures, and the video I attach
Unfortunately, the time has come for me to consider selling my "crown jewel", only because I want a new project, and already have another project in the form of another car that takes a lot of time..plus this 500 is starting to get close to where I want it to be
There is a lot to say about this car..so sit down, and read on if you are interested in one of the better w124 500e"s in the country.
Mercedes Benz w124 500e, Handbuilt by Porsche, needs no further introduction to this classic Wolf in Sheep's Clothing car
First of all, the "hint" with this car is that it has a chassis change history, which is of course approved by the Norwegian Motor Vehicle Inspectorate. This cannot be compared to semi-trailers anyway, as they are two very different things. Read on, and let me explain.
My car here is an original 500e car, and it always has been. The thing or "hint", is that it has the identity of a Norwegian 1991 model 500e that was wrecked. My car, which was then imported from Sweden, has had its original chassis number crossed out, and has been given a "rebuild" chassis number. But all in all, the car is an original car, as it still has the original chassis number where it should be, and the car has matching numbers on the engine and transmission, So the car is still the same 500e as it was when it left the factory in 1992.
Doesn't this scare you (which it strictly shouldn't, although I understand that this can bother some, but as long as the history is neat..then I have never seen any reason for it to be as negative as many think. It is often about ignorance, and that built up is mixed with OMbygd, which is totally different)), so read more about this car,as it is in somewhat above average good condition
First of all.
Body/Appearance:
The car is a 1992 model,Sold new in Germany. Car was in Germany from 1992 to 1996, when it was then imported to Sweden, and then came to Norway in 2007/2008. The car has a complete facelift appearance. It is originally 199 color, Blauschwartz, but is painted in Mercedes' color 197, Obsidian Black, which I personally like very much. The front and rear lights are clean, as they were replaced when the car was painted in 2009. This is quite "important".. as lights for these cars are an expensive affair. The car is not spotless on the outside, it has some stains here and there, as it is also used after all.. but it is very clean and neat considering what it is. The rims on the car are original Amg E55 rims, which are 8.5 inches wide at the front, and 9 inches wide at the rear. The rims are quite good, but with a couple of scratches here and there. The black 3-piece Amg rims that are in some of the pictures have been sold
I bought the car myself in July 2015, when I worked at Bertel O Steen.
And ever since then, the car has been a rolling restoration project. I wanted to get this car as close to new condition as possible, especially with regard to the underside of the car, but also make the car as good technically as possible.
The short version is that approximately 2500 hours of restoration work have been spent on this car. The car has been completely overhauled electrically as the car had an engine problem when I bought it, and that is why I bought it. This fault has of course been repaired, and as a result, the car's electrical system has been completely overhauled. Which is a BIG plus, as these cars are incredibly advanced for their age. AND with many other cars of this type, there are probably many potentially scary things lurking if you have not checked the car with a magnifying glass, Something you will not have to do if you buy this one, because I have been a detective here
ENGINE/DRIVETRAIN:
In terms of engine, I can tell you that X number of oil changes have been made on this car in the 23000km I have driven the car. This is because I have a philosophy that nothing cleans an engine inside better than fresh oil..so in the first half of the year, I probably had 5-10 oil changes to clean the engine inside (yes, I have dust on my brain
It is now still like new inside.
The water pump on the car has been replaced, which is a comprehensive job. The top cover gaskets, vacuum hoses/crankcase ventilation hoses have been replaced, which are often bad now that the cars are starting to age. The washer tank, expansion tank, SLS level tank, distributor cap and rotors have been replaced, there is a new upgraded upper engine wiring harness. The lower engine wiring harness has been renovated by me. A new oil separator has been installed inside the engine, an upgraded oil filter return valve kit has been installed, the internal pickup filter and rubber on the oil pump have been replaced. This was done when the oil pan was down to check the timing chain rails.
Otherwise, the engine sounds incredibly good. It has no leaks either.
The gearbox has had new oil and filter three times in the course of 23000km
The differential has had new oil 4 times in the course of 23000km
SLS level system has had new oil 4 times in 23000km
Power steering oil and filter have been changed 3 times in 23000km
Brake fluid has been changed every year.
Air filters have been changed every year.
Spark plugs have been changed 2 times in 23000km
Complete fuel pump system has been changed, two new original Bosch pumps, new filter, new pump suspension, new fuel connections and hoses.
Lambda probe has been changed, New Original Mercedes,, EXPENSIVE
Gear selector neutral switch on gearbox has been changed, Original Mercedes.
CanBox cover (Control unit cover) is New
Fuel pressure regulator has been changed
The car also has a full service history from day 1, to now.
The car has also received "new" driveshafts as part of the renovation, when instead of renovating the ones that were on the car, I got hold of axles that had been on an American SL that had low km. These axles were checked and renovated before installation
The car has an original exhaust system at the rear to the catalytic converters. From the catalytic converter, there is an aftermarket center muffler, and from the center muffler, there is a custom made "twin" exhaust. This was done like this because the car had this when I bought the car, and I chose to keep that style as the rear bumper has been cut out for the twin exhaust. But the exhaust system was built with new pipes. The sound is reasonably nice with this system, and it is a little louder than the original. But not annoying.
In the engine compartment there is also an original AMG air filter box. This has no effect function, but gives a nice touch in terms of detail. The original air filter box of course comes with the car.
CHASSIS
Here, EVERYTHING has been done, except for painting the rear crossmember itself.
I can mention that it has been replaced
REAR:
Rear wheel bearings in newly painted spindles, with new original Mercedes brake shields. New parking brake inner, with new original cables.
New original lower wishbones at the rear
Complete set of Lemfoerder trailing arms
New SLS dampers, with new hydraulic pipes
Diff has new seals on output shafts
New renovated original springs
FRONT:
New Lemfoerder wishbones
New original steering rods complete
New original drag link
New original auxiliary worm bushing (expensive)
New original Stabilus steering damper
Newly renovated / painted spindles at the front, with good wheel bearings, only new grease
New Sachs dampers, which are not for the 500e. These were installed when I combined a troubleshooting job with a "squeak" in the front with new dampers, also to avoid having to renovate the original dampers. It turned out that the squeak in the front was not these dampers, but the shock absorber tops which strangely enough made a minimal squeaking sound. So anyway, I have the original dampers lying around,,,and these SHOULD reassembled as these are specific to the 500e..as they have internal "Rebound" damping,,,which actually works as an extra strut to put it simply. But as I said...these come with the car, in addition to an extra set of spindles and hubs.
CHASSIS:
I have also focused on rust on this car.Like an old Mercedes..there was rust, and it has been here for quite a while. Not rust welding, but surface rust on the chassis, and wheel arches, etc.
This is completely renovated, rust has been removed, and the car has been given a nice finish on the entire "underside" of the car.All wheel arches have been inspected.Finish is black matt, as it best suited how they should be original.
Front crossmember, front spring mounts, wishbone mounts have been checked and renovated.Everything can be documented if there is interest in it.
INTERIOR:
The car has a beautiful leather interior, which bears the mark that the mileage actually matches what the service booklet says.
There is minimal wear and tear, and EVERYTHING electrical in the car works, EXCEPT ONE thing that I have not yet done anything about, since the fault is actually relatively "new", and that is that the rear headrests cannot be folded down, because the microswitch in the rear sunshade does not register that the sunshade is completely folded down..so then the headrests will not go down either. The sunshade works by the way. It is just a little bigger in the microswitch itself that registers the "down position".
I have installed a stereo system in the car, as the original system in the car was unfortunately removed at an earlier time.
I have installed a "retro" contemporary Continental player. This has CD, FM radio, DAB+, Bluetooth and USB. I have installed new front panels in the doors and dashboard..and used original speaker holders in the doors. There are still original speakers in the parcel shelf in the car. And the sound in the system works fine for me. It is not a "stereo car"...so I have never wanted anything more.
The car has electric seats in the front, where the driver's seat has memory
I think I should not say more..as I think I have covered most of it here.
There is at least little doubt that you are getting an above average 500e here.
Take a look at the pictures,,and you can judge for yourself
I am also attaching a video from my youtube channel. The video you see is a "buying guide" video I made a while ago. The 3-piece AMG rims are unfortunately sold. But I have 16 inch Evo1/R129 SL rims that can go with it, and I have another set of 18 inch five spoke rims that can go with it if you want a set.
When it comes to price, it is difficult to set a price considering the "chassis swap" history, something I choose to be honest about, even though at the same time I choose to see this as an original car with a history
As said and mentioned a few times already, the car is, and has always been a 500e, and not a deeded 250diesel.
But considering the condition of this car, and the hours and money that have been put into it..I feel that a price between 350-400 is what I can let it go for.
I am of course open to serious offers, and I underline SERIOUS offers.
The car is located in Stavanger, at a hidden address.
The car is of course sold in the condition it is in without any form of warranty. But I have tried to provide complete information about the condition by providing all the information I can, and to supplement it with a large amount of pictures and video. It is still an old car where things can actually happen, which is also the case with new cars
The car has also won several awards, such as Best Enthusiast car at the Wings n Wheels exhibition in Stavanger, Best 1990s car at the Bertel O Steen Autumn Exhibition, and Best 1990s car at the Motorama exhibition in Stavanger. Something I am very proud of
Thank you for stopping by, and feel free to send me a message here if you are genuinely interested.
