What is going on with the headlights, headlight wipers, and wiper panels?

Someone installed euro headlights but fitted the stock U.S. headlight wiper motors. The wiper arms are swapped left to right. It's a bad mod because the U.S. motors have a smaller arc, combined with the U.S. arms, it leaves most of the euro headlight without any wiper action. Beyond that, as you noticed, it looks odd.

FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, eBay Auction: $8K ($17.5K Buy It Now) (Colleyville, TX)

Just listed on eBay. At least a 2 owner car as it was bought by the current one in 2011. From the listing description:

"This is an excellent example of fine restoration. Excellent paint. Over $40,000 invested since 2011. Receipts and spreadsheet for work done since purchased in 2011. Driven 35,000 miles since restoration. Starting price at $7,999 well below market value. The selling price will be what the market determines on this listing."

Seller notes two issues:
1. Sagging headliner by the A pillars
2. Two areas of loose stitching on the front passenger seat bottom

Looks like part of the $40K spent included updated headlights to 1994

Funny you mention this. My car spent its early years being inspected/serviced in Colleyville, TX. Pics do make car look like 040 but it is indeed 199.

Headlights appear to have US-style wipers reverse mounted.

Some interesting SA codes on the datacard.

300 STORAGE BOX IN FRONT TRAY
664 LIGHT ALLOY WHEEL 7-HOLE STAR DESIGN 17 INCH
802 AEJ 06/1/M/X (whatever the hell this is...)

Everybody has their reasons, but $40K is a lot to invest in 3 years of ownership only to let it go. Could be a good opportunity for someone seeking a 500E.

Agreed. Seems like an awful lot. I wonder if there are receipts for all of it.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, $18k (Colleyville, TX)

I never saw this one in person, but I did ask him previously on where it was painted. Never saw the before pictures, but I think this one must fall into a car he likes, rarely uses and for the right price will sell.

Figure he spent ~ 10k on paint, harnesses, new eta, motor mounts. That would be 20k. Oh those rims are chromed now- what does that run with a new set of tires?

Dealership could easily charge 50% more. There was one in Austin (white car) which the owner dropped 10k at the dealer (low mileage car). Dave figured they pulled codes and replaced anything with a code!

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, $18k (Colleyville, TX)

How come that buddy invested 40K if there are:
NO proper 036 headlights (most likely current were bought used) ,
no proper wipers,
wiper motos,
wiper panels,
faded old grill ,
something weird and odd with the door panels leather (not restored)
heat damaged leather (not restored)

However car looks to be well taken care off and in decent shape. In addition, I cannot disagree that there might be 30/40K investment . It is quite easy to spend that money on 500E especially if one does not know right place for parts and is not DIY person.

Looks like it spent its life under the sun, leather is dry, wood looks faded even on the side panels and so on ....

SOLD for $9299.00

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, $18k (Colleyville, TX)

I'm the buyer of this car - I wish I didn't miss the auction last week - cost me about $900 more!

This is my first 500, but nowhere near my first Benz. This is my 9th Mercedes - currently have three now; '00 ML55, '03 C320, and '07 S600 (850hp). Recently I bought and sold an '87 190e 2.3 16v. Like the 500E it was one of my dream cars growing up. It was a fun car, but I couldn't justify keeping it with all my other vehicles.

On this car, I need to do the following (without even getting it)

1. Fix the headlights (can anyone point me in the correct direction?)
2. Fix the headliner and seat (already on that, got a convertible guy who can fix it)
3. Get those chrome rims fixed to painted or swap for someone who has painted rims.

Between the shipping to NJ, the fixes list above, I'm looking at another $2,500.

As far as the worn wood - I'm not sure if it's the pictures or if it's real - either way, that kind of stuff doesn't bother me too much.

I am super excited about this vehicle - combines two of my three passions - Mercedes & Porsche.

Here is my current garage - Hope to be an active member of this community....thanks for letting me rant!

2007 Mercedes S600 - (850hp)
2006 Porsche Cayenne Turbo S
2005 Porsche 911 S
2004 Mercedes C320
2002 Porsche 911 Turbo (850 hp)
2000 Mercedes ML55 AMG
1999 Porsche 911 4 Cabriolet
1995 Ferrari 456 gt
1990 Ferrari 348 ts

I think this 500E will fit right in!

Thanks,
Erik

Congrats. You can buy the euro headlights from the Mercedes classic center in Irvine, Ca. Contact Tom or Woody.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, $18k (Colleyville, TX)

You may need to change the headlight plug depending on what's on it now. I would also recommend some Osram Hyper H4 70/65 bulbs. I'm not sure about your wiper set up. Most people just delete them because they really don't do much unless you're in a snow storm. I also like the euro blinker side lights. They are a brighter orange and make a nice contrast. Just ask MBCC and they can order them from Germany. You can also check with lionel.rutter@mbofgainesville.com in Florida. Might be a better option since you're on the east coast.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, $18k (Colleyville, TX)

Thanks guys - looking at options now. Rear tails I like the smoked look - anyone know if I can get the 500E with the underline still? The emblem?

Thanks,
Erik

Possible danger Will Robinson? I have seen over wattage bulbs burn up headlamp units, headlight switches, turn signal/beam switch stalks, and bulb monitoring units. Use extreme caution, do some research, and benefit from other people's mistakes on the "bigger bulb" front. YMMV!

More Klink trivia time here: The primary function of headlight washers is to clean road salt encrustation from your headlights to avoid dazzling oncoming traffic. Thats also why they are compulsory with xenon and LED headlights in the ECE. Each salt crystal is a tiny lens, millions of them on your headlights is not good...

I don't know, they get me giddy. Cost me about $1,200 to get them 'sorted' on my 190 - worth every penny. If they are truly gutted, then I'll figure something out, but I hope to keep them.

Oh I understand! My last USA 500 (now owned by my friend tcg1122) that I did the euro conversion on I had to go whole hog with the correct wipers, the pneumatic range adjusters, everything...

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, $18k (Colleyville, TX)

Oh Klinkster you're such a company man. I have run the Osram 70/65 on two cars without issue and I know a few others here have too. I would not go any higher without proper relays but you have to push the limits sometimes. The Osram 70/65 says on the box "Off Road". Even if you don't go with the 70/65 I would still recommend Osram bulbs.

I know that you know what you're doing, Smokey! That was a warning to others. And do note that the word "possible" was bolded, not the word "danger". The extra information is greatly appreciated.

Let there be light! :jono:

RE: 500E with underline, best to ask Tom Hanson at MBCC at the same time you inquire re: Euro headlights. I obtained mine from him over a year ago, about $20, p/n 124 817 37 15. FYI, parts.com website still has them listed as being available.

What Glen said, again. ^^^

And, "Euro lights" are not the same as 500E Euro lights. Factory setup is 2 foglights and 4 high beams. This car currently has 4 foglights and 2 high beams.

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 168kmi, $18k (Colleyville, TX)

The car arrived a few days ago. I haven't had too much time to play with it. There are a ton of documents with the vehicle - I need to go through them. If someone did spend $25k+ restoring this car, they got ripped off. Nothing is really wrong with the car, just most of the vehicle looks like it's aged.

The wood is not faded. The wood in the rear is cracked bad - see photos.
The wash reservoir is cracked in a ton of places and leaked all of the fluid I attempted to put in.
The trim on the roof is separating.
The sunroof is not 100% seated correctly.
The Triangle leather by the mirror is falling off.
Some of the leather around the door pockets are separating.
Very, very springy seats.
The Non-OEM front windshield is chipped (dime size)
Some parts held in with - 'hot glue'

However, the body and mechanical are flawless. Runs and idles perfectly - extremely smooth. Shifts perfectly.

I can work with what I have - I think the price paid was just right considering the issues.

I'll fix what makes sense and drive her -

Erik

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 170kmi, $9k (Manalapan, NJ)

On eBay now. Many, many photos:

1992 Mercedes-Benz E-Class 500E 4dr Sedan

This 1992 Mercedes 500E is finished in Gray over Black interior. This is a very special car here. If you are looking at this car you know what it is. Only 1,528 of these cars were imported to the USA from 1992-1994. Mercedes contracted Porsche to build this super sedan and the performance numbers show.

Mechanically the car runs top. I have totaled up records that span from 2011 to 2014. In 2011, $12,617 of maintenance was performed, 2012 $9,094, 2013 $7,501, and 2014 $5,982. That totals to $35,194 in recent service was done to this car! All you need to do is drive it! The engine is very powerful and the transmission shifts smooth.

The car was repainted and it was a very quality job. The paint thickness readings are low. This car has never been in an accident. All panels line up as they should, this car looks great. I would give it a solid 9/10.

All features work as they should. The interior is a 8/10. The seats are clean with no rips or stains. The car was garaged and has never seen bad weather. The headliner is loose in areas but could easily be reset. The B pillar leather trim covers are loose as well, an easy repair.

The car has recent upgraded Genuine Mercedes European headlamp assemblies that cost $1,500. The tail lamps are also upgraded with Euro style. I have the stock headlamps and tail lamps for the car. I also have the factory original chrome rims for the car. The tires are brand new Michelin Pilot sports.

I have a stack of records and the original books.

Drive this 500E anywhere. This is the car you want! If the car had 25,000 miles on the dash you would believe it!

Call Jon at 908-797-2669 with serious offers only!

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 170kmi, $9k (Manalapan, NJ)

I have record of this car in my database, dating from October, 2010. At that time, the car was located in Mountain View, CA and had 131,248 miles on the odometer. It was listed on eBay at that time.

Here are my notes on the car:

"Car listed in Bay Area Craigslist and more recently on eBay. Same info given for both ads. Seller says: "1. All original except for European Headlights and an upgraded sat/HD/Bluetooth ready JVC stereo. I have all of the original radio parts if you want to take it back to stock.
2. I am the third owner and have the last 3 sets of records and also the original Bill of Sale. I have over $10000 worth of receipts in the last two years including a new wiring harness. 3. The car has the original paint, but the hood, roof and trunk are losing the clear coat. 4. Mileage right now is 131,2xx 5. Black Pearl Metallic/Black Leather interior 6. Everything works. A/C blows cold, heated seats, rear window shade, etc. 7. No engine modifications, chips, exhaust. Factory only." Sketchy photos but here is my own interpretation of them: Extremely thin paint on hood; requires repaint. roof paint horrible as well, needing repaint. Stock factory wheels; aftermarket stereo, faded console wood. Crack in rear seat wood between seats; seller says has Euro headlights. More info from seller: "At the end of October the car had a complete service and check on the car. Compression was 190 across the board except for one had 185. Replaced cap & rotor, spark plugs, valve cover gasket, heater hose, new battery, windshield wiper pump, etc.. Total bill was $3306. The car is located in Mountain View. The service was very thorough and checked for anything which needed to be replaced and replaced it. The front bumper has a crack on the left side. One very small door ding on passenger front door. If I keep the car it will be painted and front bumper fixed, the first week of January for $7500."

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 170kmi, $20k (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Will these idiots ever list actual miles on odometer? Says 1 mile and no pic of odometer on ebay and their site

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 170kmi, $20k (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

...and still only ONE mile on the odometer!

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 170kmi, $20k (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Anyone know of a good PPI checklist specifically for an E500E? Search wasn't my friend on this topic. TIA

Re: FS: 1992 500E, Pearl Black/Black, 170kmi, $20k (Ft. Lauderdale, FL)

Guys, what is a good deal price vs reasonable price vs top dollar for a car in this condition and mileage? I am only looking right now, but at some point I think I will buy one of these.
