FOR SALE 1992 500E, Smoke Silver/Brasil!, 278k KM, €42.5k (Someren Eind, Netherlands)

Friend of mine just bought it. I went to Holland to look at it and i was surprized.
This car is in original paint. I didn´t find any painted elements.
Runs well, plenty of stuff was done, also recently - gearbox, engine got all needed goods like chain and all around it etc.
Temp was nice while driving. Again, original paint...

Great looking car! :star:

According to what Jelmer posted back in 2011 is this the second out of two cars in this color combo in the Netherlands. That could have changed of course due to import, but an 036 with Brazil interior is pretty rare anyway so it's not that many cars to keep track on.

No affiliation.

Amazing coincidence!
Yesterday I ran into an A124 with this same colour combo, but even the convertible soft top is brown there.

The best is yet to come - it is for sale at MBCC in Fellbach, very close to Stuttgart, so I paid them a visit.
When inspecting the engine compartment, exhaust manifolds looked as new as @Niklas32 ones (with ceramic treatment applied) on his rebuilt car do...

This thing has ONLY * 850 km / 520 ml * on the odometer from new - I wondered if MBCC had restored it or put a new cluster, but my question was clarified by one on the technical staff there.

I must admit, I'm not sure if this would have a 5 (or rather 6) figure price tag - next week sales team will be back from Retro Mobil in Paris and they shall hopefully get back to me to share this information.

VIN = WDB1240611B791030

300CE-24 Smoke Silver / Brasil Leather and Brown top

Beautiful car - but I had the same question, is 850km since new, or since a "rebuild"? Pity this has the CIS-injected M104.

There's a 124.066 for sale here in USA, also Smoke Silver over Brasil... spendy at $28k USD (link), but only 26kmi.

Another one sold on BaHaT not long ago (link). 48kmi, but only $17k USD (link).

Doesn't look bad at all either - Mercedes VIN Decoder | Decode Your Mercedes-Benz VIN

Yes, mainly because the M104.980 lacks the torque of the 3.2 HFM as well, but has to cope with the extra weight (of around +250kg/540lb compared to the coupé 125.051) due to all the reinforcement job done to the body to withstand torsion and vibration tendencies.

I always wondered why MB made around 1,300-1,400 units of the 300CE (US name for MY1993, right when the C124 came with code 855), while Europeans would have gotten a '320CE (cabriolet)' badge (which didn't happen, except for UK/Japan, where it actually did!) of the A124-convertibles.

Now thinking, they might have not wanted/needed to deal with extra CARB-certification on the 'new' (convertible) model, and then having to do so again some months later (when Mopf-2 came, and at the time A124 for RoW got the 3.2HFM too).

one sold on BaHaT not long ago (link). 48kmi, but only $17k USD
The guy who won the auction got an absolute bargain then, such an specimen (in that condition and with 'relatively' very low milage) would rather easily be reaching prices of about € 30-45k - Mercedes VIN Decoder | Decode Your Mercedes-Benz VIN

Totally off the topic, sorry. When looking interior pictures of cabriolet above I'm wondering what the center console layout would be like if you've opted for webasto heater (SA228) and an trip computer (SA245) in a convertible? 🤔 Is this even possible?

I'd guess the trip computer was not available with the cabrio.

Interesting cars! Wish there was more info on both. The lack of any fan shroud on the silver A124 with M113 (?) makes me wonder about the rest of the conversion...

At first glance I thought you were meaning the difference between the M104s (3.0 KE-Jet and the 3.2 HFM) when you wrote 'little bit of extra torque..' LOL

Another A124 with an M119 will be joining the club soon, after conversion-build is finalised by a guy called 'Önder Aslan'..

Conversion project seen on the FB-group named "Mercedes w201 w124 w140 w123 w126 W460 Teile / Fahrzeuge / Restaurieren"

I will upload some pics I got from his FB-posts too.

Just in case anyone's wondering about paint colour on this A124 V8-project, I recall its owner having posted "GREEN BLACK METALLIC (189U)" - or 'Schmaragdschwarz metallic' in German - on one of his FB-comments when replying to this same question.

One of my E320 wagons (S124) has that very same colour, and strangly enough it looks more blue than green from almost every angle, as seems to be the case with the above A124 as well
Is that the original color for the car? I thought 189 was a newer color than 124s - but then again, there are 124s from 97 even, so what do I know 😄

Very cool to see such a project with the proper attention to detail; I'm curious to see how the rear fenders (and Sacco boards) will end up when he's finished 👍

Yep, that color was introduced in mid '93, see:

My E320 wagon (S124) is from August 1995 (incidently both of my E320 wagons - the other one in color 199 - rolled out of the factory one week apart)

Most likely it's a color change, but without the VIN to confirm, it's hard to tell. @WDB748372 might be able to query the datacard database to see if any 124 was ever produced with paint code 189.

No 124 ever came to USA with 189 Black Opal. That first appeared in USA on the 210 chassis, in the 1996 sales brochures. (Edit - except for the few 124's that DID show up in USA with paint 189! GSXR was wrong! See posts below.  )

@gsxr I thought @Surf Blau and you were referring to my 1995 wagon in that color, ha ha. I shouldn't be that self centered, of course :hammerhead: The A124 above seems to be a pre-facelift (MOPF1 cabrio) which indeed couldn't originally be had in color 189 (in Europe or anywhere else) as 189 came into being (in Europe that is) in mid 1993 together with the MOPF2 facelift

This thread got a little murky so I was having trouble keeping up! Was your 1995 S124 painted 189 from the factory? If so, do you know the production date? Could be some late-build 124's were sprayed 189 for Europe or Japan.

:strawberry:

I do see 189 colored 124s. I looked at all the 124 cabrios so that's 300CE-24, E200, E220 and E320 (chassis 061, 060, 062, 066 respectively).
No 189 300CE-24V but several hundred of each chassis otherwise. The earliest is from July 1995 VIN WDB1240601C274665.

I would've guessed that as well as I've never seen one but to my surprise there are 35 1995 (only that year) E320 Cabrios for the US. First one being WDBEA66E6SC278555 (photo attached, datacard here).

Interesting! And, it confirms that 189 showed up pretty late in production. July 1995 is almost 1996 USA model year.

WOW! Thanks for this info! I did not know that ANY came to USA in 189 Black Opal. Edited my previous post... :doof:

Cool, good to see there’s still stuff to learn about these cars :)

I thought this was a color that came with the 202/210 models, but thinking about it again the 202 was launched in 1993 already, so there was a massive overlap between it and 124s. I’m getting old 😄

I guess his car was white previously - but not completely sure about this, or he got rear side walls/arches from a white car though (?) to carry out the modifications and make a bit wider - and it's likely a US-model (VIN sticker on driver's door jamb, plaque on lower-left windshield frame seen too '?') that was re-imported to Europe.

And he states the A124 was resprayed/painted completely by himself (or a shop) with '189' Green Black metallic, applied with a 1.1 bar pressure. Some photos and a short video are attached.
