About this vehicle
This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is an original. The owner has had it for 5+ years. The vehicle runs great and is not regularly driven.
Seller's Notes
ready to ride
Exterior
the 500 E is easily distinguished from its lesser brethren. Because of its look, limited numbers, hand-built construction, and unique pedigree it is already considered a "modern classic", even within Mercedes-Benz. With a body so wide it did not fit the Mercedes assembly line they called on Porsche to hand build these cars making them even more special. This thing is Fast, Class, and ready to go!

No prior record of this car in my private database.

My notes: Car has tinted windows, later-model AMG wheels; delamination along passenger side of rear windscreen; huge double-woofer Kicker box in the trunk; car cover; trunk stops need replacement; cheesy eBay headlights and front corner lamps; big paint gouge out of front spoiler; tow hook cover is loose; satellite radio antenna on roof above driver's side of windshield; front bumper insert is cracked and looks like it is compressed; broken cheesy MB dealer cupholders on driver's & passenger's doors; shoe sole scuff mark on driver's map pocket; Stage 3 (near-terminal) case of DDD; does appear to have owner's manual pack (a bonus); light to modest wear on front seats; carpet stains on left rear transmission tunnel carpet; cheesy non-stock windshield wiper blade; yellowed expansion tank; zoom tubes have been replaced; underhood SRS sticker is peeling; windshield has been replaced at some point.

This is about 90 minutes north of me. If anyone wants it checked out PM me. Not sure if I'll have time before the weekend, but I can try.

Dan

That's a big price drop. Someone wants it gone before winter!

I quite like smoke silver on Sacco cars, but invariably it's paired w a light interior such as here which makes it seem a tad geriatric for my tastes. Growing up my dad had a later W140 that he bought from the head of MB Canada, a German who had it special ordered in Smoke Silver over black, with grey inserts. It looked great, especially on its summer Monoblocks, and was an absolute tank. I'll never forget waking up one morning to find several police cars out front our house interrogating my Dad while the car was on cinder blocks. Evidently some n'er do well knew the value of the wheels and tried to steal them, only to be caught by an early morning jogger. The car was fine, and it further fed into the drug dealer/gangster image that sometimes follows the W140 (and a young me loved).

Hey Gerry I’m interested in maybe buying it and would appreciate your opinion. Is it worth it? What’s the top dollar you guys will pay for an example like this?

Hard to say without going and looking at the car. You quoted my observations above. I have never seen this car in person.

Based on the limited information and photos, it appears to be a pretty nice example, and the reduced price is right in the ballpark. However as Gerry said, you either need to look at it yourself in person, or pay for a proper PPI from a knowledgeable shop. A few dozen more photos and a half-hour on the telephone (not texting, ugh) would tell you most of what you need to know.

I pulled the carfax report looks like mileage is far from real. Even though carfax says 1 owner.

AutoCheck shows 2 owners, and the listing says 2 owners.

The potential rollback is concerning. Detailed records would be needed to back up the claimed miles. Note that all the reported discrepancies are from the same indy shop, which is interesting. Again, a phone call would help. If the owner refuses to talk on the phone, or is evasive about the odo question, walk away.

Now on BaHaT. $3k spent on new seat leather front AND rear, and new carpet too?

This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 500E is powered by a 5.0-liter M119 V8 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. It is finished in silver over beige leather and is equipped with a sliding steel sunroof, 18” AMG Monoblock wheels, heated power-adjustable front seats, automatic climate control, and a CD stereo. The car was acquired by the seller’s spouse in 2025, and it is now offered with service records, a removed set of AMG wheels, and a clean Florida title in the name of the seller’s spouse.

The car is finished in silver with darker lower cladding and features a sliding steel sunroof, fog lights, a power-telescoping antenna, and a single eccentric-sweep windshield wiper. The car was repainted in 2017.

The 18” AMG Monoblock wheels were mounted with Continental tires in 2016. The car is equipped with Automatic Slip Control (ASR), and braking is handled by anti-lock discs at each corner. Service in 2016 included replacing the brake pads, brake rotors, front lower control arms, front wheel bearings, rear suspension accumulators, and the right tie rod assembly. The power steering pump was replaced in 2019.

The heated power-adjustable front bucket seats and rear bench are upholstered in beige leather, joined by a color-coordinated dashboard, center console, door panels, and carpets. Wood trim accents the dash, center stack, and doors. Amenities include power windows, automatic climate control, and a CD stereo. A trunk-mounted subwoofer is shown in the gallery. The carpets and seat leather were replaced in 2011.

The leather-wrapped airbag steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation consisting of a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, and oil pressure. The six-digit odometer shows 146k miles, approximately 35 of which were added under current ownership. A Carfax report notes a potential rollback in 2017 and a mileage discrepancy in 2020. Total mileage is unknown.

The 5.0-liter M119 V8 features Bosch LH-Jetronic fuel injection and was factory-rated at 326 322 horsepower and 354 lb-ft of torque. The throttle body was replaced in 2011. Work in 2016 included replacing the fuel pump, air mass meter, alternator, coolant temperature sensor, accessory belt tensioner, timing guides, cam followers, valve lifters, and all eight fuel injectors. An engine mount was replaced in 2017, and the wiring harness was reportedly replaced in 2018.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a four-speed automatic transmission and an automatic locking differential (ASD). The driveshaft flex joint, support, and bearing were replaced in 2017, and the throttle kickdown cable was replaced in 2018. The transmission was replaced in 2020.

The Carfax report shows the aforementioned mileage inconsistencies and history in Florida from new. A removed set of AMG wheels mounted with Contiental tires are included.

Rest of photos and CarFax. I think the indicated mileage may be accurate (assuming the odometer works and the gears aren't stripped). All the "rollback" reported numbers are from the SAME SHOP which could be a lazy data entry person, except for a single DMV entry of 130,000 which is also someone's guess, not an actual reading.

That all seems to have come out rather poorly. Note to Self: "No DIY seat covers."

And what are those headlights?

maw
Indeed, ulpholstery jobs are one of those things in automotive repair that really ARE best left to a professional -- particularly one who knows MB seating.

Those headlights are common aftermarket / Asian-made pedestrian W124 headlamps -- I have seen them for many years on eBay. All plastic.

Too bad, as these are a very marked step down from even the "Depo" aftermarket headlights.

I'm sure the user "SockPuppet" on HaT will chime in with some amusing anecdotes or observations, he/she always does.

:update:
Oops, looks like they already did!
:lolol:

Yeah, the spoiler is a, uh, spoiler.

Also, the tires are the wrong width AND wrong diameter. 215/40/18 is not only narrower than stock (!!), they are also the smaller diameter meant for standard 124, not the 036. The 036 uses a tire that is ~1" larger diameter vs all other 124.

Although the wheels are not AMG wheels as stated, they do look OK. I just couldn't figure out why they look wrong on this car. The tires create the goofy look. This car has numerous undesirable modifications that can be changed to make a good starter driver.

I had noticed this 2017 invoice for new seat leathers and a "carpet kit". I wasn't sure what the carpet kit was. The seller just posted some very unfortunate photos which show the molded-form floor carpet has been replaced with some funky aftermarket stuff, that leaves sheet metal exposed up front. In the rear footwell, I thought it had ill-fitting floor mats, but nope... that is the aftermarket carpet which is not cut properly nor molded to fit. I expect the aftermarket carpet does NOT have the factory molded-foam insulation underneath either.

This will be difficult to fix properly... seats need to come out, and a good used Cream-Beige carpet from a donor 034/036 "needs installed". From the seller comments, they seem to have a rather high opinion of the car's condition, and would not respond well to DaveyDowner observations like this. Gerry, with the new information, I dunno if this one will hit $30k. I also predict RNM for whatever the top bid is.

A lot of $$$ has been invested in mechanicals over the past decade, so there's that...

:yayo:

That's one-third of what a proper repaint should cost, if one-quarter. I paid over $12K back in 2016 when I had my 560SEC repainted in Houston, FYI. This is with lights/windscreens out, though, so it involved some labor.

It is unfortunate as to the carpets and seat upholstery. While probably fine to the casual know-nothing HaT bidder, the minor to modest "issues" with this car are starting to add up to something of a $20-25K bill to make correct, plus lots of time and effort.

I have been feeling this car may hit somewhere between $25 and $30K. But I could be wrong on this.

Wonder if the owner knows there's a thread here on his car.....

Seller added some info... he basically knows nothing about the car, he received it a few months ago as payment for remodeling the PO's home. The seller also added the current wheels with wrong-size tires, and the rear wing.

@Cleveland222 yes the cover matting is only there to protect the original [aftermarket] carpets. The velcro is ther to keep the Matt’s from sliding. Velcro caused no damage.
The steering of is covered due the the steering of being discolored (faded) I’m assuming from the first owner who put the milage on the vehicle.
The 2cnd owner completed the restoration and did not put much milage on the vehicle. Dr Courtney garaged the vehicle after driving after a year after the restoration. I obtained said vehicle as his General Contractor in a payoff from his balance doing a Remodel on his home.
I since added a trunk lid spoiler and the 18in Monoblock rims and tires finishing with the polishing and Ceramic Coating of the vehicle. I also replaced all rubber and the Radiator and hoses new (OEM) Also replaced the two window motors both driver side and left passenger back.
Over 52 thousand un three years was invested by the doctor. He lost interest with the vehicle due to he could not get more horse power from the vehicle. So it sat for 8yrs until I obtained said vehicle.
She runs perfect with zero issues. Love the vehicle but I have other classics I obtain to. This is a turn key vehicle minus the headlights he had replaced with 1994 headlights due to the fact he says he was not able to find the original OEM headlights. 100% Transparency is what we have."

I love how the owner says that the headlights were replaced with 1994 units because the originals were unobtanium.

LOL, the "1994" replacements are cheap junk aftermarket headlights, and have nothing to do with MB facelift E500 headlights.

It just goes to show how clueless this seller is. I also love his repeated claims that this car has undergone a "complete restoration."

Yeah, as noted above, the seller acquired the car as payment and only knows what the PO told him. That, along with BaT E500E sale history, may have created an "IKWIG" (I Know What I Got) syndrome. He may have accepted the car in payment thinking it would be worth a fortune, and having no idea all of the things the PO did wrong... and/or, the PO's shop did wrong.

I'm sticking with my RNM prediction...

:duck:

Now the seller has taken to insulting the Peanut Gallery(TM). Not a good look. Still at $15K. He got real pezzed when questioned about the spoiler, too. Calls the spoiler a "slight upgrade." And didn't he claim the wheels are AMG Monoblocks?

So this is a "Reserve" auction? How did BaT allow that? I thought they were pushing nearly everyone to no-reserve auctions.

If this one does complete, I don't think it's going to hit $30K. He's his own worst enemy on this auction.......and the REAL peanut gallerists (the usuals) haven't even bothered to chime in.

Someone really ought to tell him about this thread. That will REALLY set the dude into orbit.......

Oh snap! I didn't realize they were all flagged! Fortunately, the internet is forever... via email. Sure likes the 🤡 emoji:

Oh Man! There's a seller to make you feel warm & fuzzy and great to deal with LOL 😆!

I'm shocked this bid up to $26k. RNM of course. Seller shoulda TTMAR. He has no idea how much is wrong and is focused on the thick stack of (old) records for the 'restoration'. Solid support for the $22k range, top bidder overshot bidder #2 by nearly 20%.

About what I predicted.....~$25K. I didn't check the auction today to see the comments. I wonder if they'll stop him from selling on their platform in the future. It's rare to see a seller go that berzerk, at least on HaT. Here we've seen a few over the years, but even then they're somewhat rare.

It's going to take MONTHS to get over the bruising I got from "OurFamily." Sorry, not. April Fools! I don't understand why his posts dried up towards the end. Does BaT bar posts if enough flags are raised? The storyline is full of conflicts; says he's been a dealer for 15 years. He gives used-car dealers a bad name, if that's possible. 800+ watchers and he expected all of us to bid? Dream on, pal. We in the Peanut Gallery are promoting transparency on the facts of the car. Isn't that the right thing to do?

It is not apparent how much due diligence BaT did on this 'seller.' Listed as a Private Seller then gets all huffed up about his vast (15-year) dealing experience. Hopefully, this 'seller' won't get a repeat opportunity.

i'm suprised bat didnt just lock the thread...

And bat doesn't do any due diligence...
BaT doesn't even pay attention. They don't care. It would take too many people to monitor comments in every live auction, and AI isn't (yet) smart enough to do it for them.

:starwars:

So it's a classic flipper-dealer representing self as seller situation. This is exactly the trajectory that eBay took to irrelevance in its automotive auction business about 8-10 years ago.

Has BaT become inundated with dealers now? Or are individual sellers still the majority?

BaHaT is Dealer Central. There's a few private sellers still around though. Not sure there's any way to get a formal count, unless maybe someone could have a 'bot scrape the site and analyse the data?

Yes, Bring a Trailer has effectively spawned a new wave of dealers and niche specialists who operate with a clear focus on a handful of core models.

At times, it leads to some curious contrasts:
The E55k AMG (W211) tends to come up from private sellers, while the SL55k AMG (R230) is far more often presented by specialists.

P.S. Typically, those dealers and niche specialists take the opposite approach — resorting to almost nauseatingly polite replies, practically licking every commenter from head to toe.
like here for example:

Hi guys. I am the high bidder on this 500 E. USD26k. I thought i got a bargain here, but that was before I found this thread ...arghhh .
The seller made a counter offer not far above the 26k. Not sure what to do. I am in Europe. These 500E go for USD45-80k here... so the question is, whether the "restoration" can be reversed. What's your thoughts?
