FOR SALE 1992 500E, Smoke Silver/Cream Beige, TMU, $31k (Brooksville, FL)

Hi guys. I am the high bidder on this 500 E. USD26k. I thought i got a bargain here, but that was before I found this thread ...arghhh .
The seller made a counter offer not far above the 26k. Not sure what to do. I am in Europe. These 500E go for USD45-80k here... so the question is, whether the "restoration" can be reversed. What's your thoughts?
Hi! I'm in the UK, and could possibly have a very nice 500E for sale. PM me if you're interested.

Note to myself - not sure if new members can use private messaging? If you have problems, email me on stephendudleyjames@btinternet.com

Kinda depends if you intend to fix the car and keep it... if so, it could still be a good deal, knowing what you'll need to repair / reverse.

However if the idea was to flip / resell soon, there's a lot of unknowns which could erase the profit margin.

Either way, expect some surprises when it arrives.

BTW, welcome to the forum!

:welcome4:

I am the high-bidder... I got 24h to accept his counter offer ...not sure I should take it
I would 110% walk.....just based on how he comported himself in the auction comments.

Not to mention the fact that he knows little to nothing about the car, and the ins and outs of the E500E. So anything he tells you (as in his auction comments that "the car has had a complete restoration and has $52K in receipts") is absolute bullshit.

It is far better to work with an owner/seller/enthusiast here on this forum, who at least will be knowledgeable about the car, and there is an excellent chance that the car will be well known and vetted here. For just a little more, say 30000 GBP, you can do MUCH better than this auction car.

An age-old rule of thumb is to pay as much as you can up front for a car - you will be much happier with your ownership experience. Even then there is a well known rule that no matter how good of an E500E you buy, it is carrying $5,000-$50,000 worth of deferred maintenance (much of which is regular fettling). Something to consider.

Because of past issues with brand-new members sending established members scamming messages relating to ghost rare/NLA parts for sale, forum rules do not allow brand-new members to send PMs until they reach a certain tenure + level of engagement here.

I, personally, wouldn't touch it with a barge pole with this 'seller' without an in-depth physical inspection and a thorough review of the documentation. Add in the shipping aggro and expense -- forget it. If you are near Asten, NL, check out Geevers Classic Cars (Geevers Classic Cars | Classic Cars for Sale). Yes, they're a dealer but they're very transparent and know what they're doing. They specialise in older Mercs and 'Merican hardware ('vettes and Mustangs) but they could probably source a good 500E for you. Best not to scrimp in this market segment.

+1 with the above. If you are considering moving forward, getting an independent inspection PRIOR to completing the deal would be worth every penny. Then make a final decision based on the inspection report.

If the seller refuses to allow an independent inspection, run away as if your hair is on fire.

@Seb Your mention of UK residence came to me whilst I was writing the above.

Are you a member of Mercedes Benz Club UK? If not, you should be. We have an active community of 500E owners. Over the years, I have physically seen most of the on-the-road 500Es in the UK at Club meets. And sometimes members sell cars to other members. I witnessed a 500E member-to-member sale last September, for instance.

Thank you everyone. This is all v helpful. I think I give this car a miss. I own a 1968 280 SE Coupe and a 1965 911. My wife would make me sell one of those before I can get a new classic car... it would just add another layer of stress on top of the other unknowns.
I am in the UK and I am member of the MB Club UK. Will check their forums. Thank you PHK.
The issue with European classics is rust. Chances are that a 30+ year US (or Japan) import has a better substance... hence me looking at US auctions.
Do you guys look into Japan 500E imports?

Several of the UK-based 500s have done time in Japan but I don't think the members personally imported them. You might post an inquiry on the MBUK club forum.

When it comes time to sell mine, I will start with club members.

Can I just repeat that i have a very nice rust free 500E here in the UK that could be for sale. Email me at:- stephendudleyjames@btinternet.com

Many / most E500E's in USA are either rust free, or have minimal rust. Get a lot of photos of the undercarriage, it will be obvious if there is rust or not. USA cars will often have ownership/registration/title history available via Carfax & AutoCheck, and often also have service records available (like this auction car).

Japan cars often have ZERO history and no service records either. IMO they are a riskier purchase unless you can get a really comprehensive inspection.

If the car already puts you off even in photos,
if the seller puts you off,
if the deal is remote-only,
and logistics look like a headache —

what could possibly go wrong?

For a Mercedes enthusiast in the UK, I’d definitely recommend grabbing one of the last tickets on the late Mercedes-Benz SL-Class (R129) train.

The SL500 (R129) (M113) — and even the SL600 (R129) — still sit firmly in the “smart budget” segment.

I need a 4-seater.. but yes, I do look at the R129 SL500s... and even 320s... given where fuel prices are heading

The difference in fuel consumption between the M112 and M113 is often highly exaggerated.
Yes, the V12 M120 is a different story 🙂

From a long-term investment perspective, however, the V8 and especially the V12 tend to be more attractive.

…and even with a late SL320 with M112 and 722.6 (which is still 1800+kg), there are moments when you catch yourself thinking: “I wish I had the V8.”
