Agreed - passenger rear suspension looks significantly lower than the driver side. SLS or spring issues, all part of the Gerry-spec $5k in deferred maintenance.

As to whether or not it's sold... call Emery or Zula at the number in the original post and find out!

A principle as immutable as any physical law. And remember it's $5K minimum, not simply $5K...

Re: FS: 1994 E500, BLack/Black, 151kmi, $10k (Welsh, LA)

5k is what a Nice 500e needs. I put this @ 15.

Exactly! Remember though, we've seen plenty of E500Es priced well above $10k that still needs the GVZ+ in deferred maintenance in the range of $10k. Hence, why it's refreshing to see one of these priced about right.

The car looks level to me. Perhaps uneven ground or camera illusion.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Black/Black, 151kmi, $10k (Welsh, LA)

Just called about this one. Sold to someone in Dallas, TX for 10K. Lucky!

As a beginner, I must ask, the figures of $5k~$15k worth of deferred maintenance, will this be to get the car up to a near impeccable condition?
Or is it a figure to get it just mechanically sound, good enough to be driven regularly without having to worry about getting stranded?
I'm tempted by slightly cheaper ones on the market with pretty high mileage but the comments of deferred maintenance has always managed to stop me.
As a college student, I obviously cannot afford much but I've always loved these cars.
My family has never purchased a used car or had an unreliable car in the past so I have yet to experience the dark side of car ownership..

No way that will make this car impeccable...that level requires starting with a 20k+ car and push 10 @ it.
Now everyone's def of impeccable varies...but if you want this car to be like a 40k mile example that needs nothing, multiple 10k stacks will be required...aka its cheaper to buy the car in the condition you Want.

Assuming you are paying a reputable shop to do the work (not DIY wrenching), around $5k should get it mechanically sound, safe to drive, and have minimal worries about being stranded. $15k should restore it to near-impeccable condition (for sure mechanically, maybe cosmetically too, depending on what you start with). This is in addition to the purchase price, which will be somewhere north of $10k unless you are shopping for beaters.

It's generally best to buy the nicest example you can afford. If you can live with tired paint and/or interior, you may be able to find a higher-mile, well-maintained example at a lower price point. There have been some really good deals this past year in the low/mid teens. Once the prices get past $20k, I'd expect the 'needs' list to be awfully short, but that's more fantasy than reality.

BTW - welcome abord!

:welcome3:

It is a common law that "The most expensive car Mercedes you can buy is a cheap Mercedes". This is particularly true with higher-end models such as the 400E and 500E.

You can certainly buy an $8-10K model that runs fine, but needs $10-12K worth of maintenance. That figure that is commonly quoted is not necessarily to bring the car to "show winning" condition, but rather to a condition so that it operates and runs as the factory intended. Meaning all mechanical and electrical systems operate as they should; the car is not leaking fluids; has no obvious major wants and needs; and has a DECENT level of interior and exterior cosmetics. Mainly mechanical and electrical though.

Honestly, as a college student I STRONGLY do not believe that a 400E or a 500E is for you, unless you have a budget of $5,000 annually for repair and maintenance if you are driving the car a fair amount. It is far better to get a lesser car such as a Honda or Toyota that is more economical and perhaps less costly to repair and run, and then "graduate" to a Mercedes once you are out in the job market and have steady income that can support ownership of such a car. The YOUNGEST of these V-8 W124 models is now 20-21 years old, and at that age there are significant issues with age (not just mileage, wear, paint, etc.) in terms of rubber items like fuel lines, brake lines, motor mounts and suspension items, many of which (brake and fuel lines) are safety related.

This is just my two cents. If costs are even the least bit of concern, WAIT until you are in a position to sink the necessary money into such a car ... or better yet just spend the money up front ($15-25K) and get the very best car you can. That way you will end up spending MUCH less money over time in repair and maintenance ... trust me if you buy a cheap car you're going to pay for more in the long run to bring it up to the spec that it would be if you just paid the money up front.

Cheers,
Gerry

In addition to what Gerry posted above... if you can turn a wrench, have access to tools including a hydraulic floor jack, can decipher the EPC and factory manuals, buy required parts at steep discounts off retail from reliable vendors, can read DIY threads on a forum, etc... you can restore a 400E/500E mechanically for a lot less than $5k-$10k.

If you have to take the car to the mechanic every time something goes wrong... and are also on the typical college-student budget... I'd recommend something a lot newer with an extended, bumper-to-bumper warranty.

:hiding:

I agree with Gerry. Unless you've got money to burn and lots of time to work on a car I would buy a honda or a toyota and graduate to the MB. On the other hand, there are plenty of W124 E320's out there for less than $2000 will get you from A to B for a while. The E320 is a great automobile with exceptional power for the size and weight of the car. Find one with decent maintenance records and it should get you through college and give you a taste for MB and its maintenance requirements. I would stick with 1994 through 1995 for the E320.

Thank you for all your insights! I guess I should hold off till later as suggested by replies. I'm currently in LA for an internship with Toyota R&D(TTC) and with a lot of 500e's on the market coming from this area, I was really tempted to go take a look at them. (I come from NY but attend school in MI, both of which rust free examples of classic cars are much rarer). I already have a pretty reliable car provided by my family but I've always wanted my "real" first car(as in bought with money I made) to be sth pretty interesting. Having seen some of these cars dip below $10k mark rlly made me thought it might be possible to own one but I guess maintaining it is a totally different matter haha
Thanks again guys!

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Black/Black, 151kmi, $10k (Welsh, LA)

Was not me!

To close the loop, I'm the new owner of the Welsh car. Previous owner, Emery and his wife Zulia, were very nice and really could not have been more gracious. I could not have asked for better car buying experience (and vehicle). He is a retired pilot and owned his own crop dusting company, both flying and maintaining his stable of airplanes and automobiles. He worked on the E500 himself and kept a detailed log of maintenance since purchased in 1998. Original paint is excellent, interior excellent and, after a test drive and 400mi trip back to Dallas, everything works (except one thing) and I can find no significant flaws. The one thing that did not work is the second tray in the Alpine 6 CD changer in the trunk. Emery told me that it never worked since installation new. Rear bumper is fine and the car sits level. WDBEA36E4RC074748.

Gerry, can you put it in the registry? Notwithstanding the above, I think (hope) that the car may be in the $5k deferred maintenance area vs. $15k! Thanks to everyone during my long search. I have been reading your posts way before I registered. I have been looking for a E500E since I read the article in Classic Cars about 4-5 years ago and your observations and informed commentary have helped steer me to this car. Phoenix, better to be lucky than good!

Thanks for the VIN. I will add it to the database. Since it was owned by the same PO for so long, it's probable that it's not in there as far as any detailed records are concerned.

Thanks for closing the loop, and PLEASE do start an OWNER thread !!!
