Rare 1994 Mercedes Benz E500 - $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)
Rare 1994 Mercedes Benz E500. Mercedes sent E320's to Porsche to be altered into the fastest and most expensive production sedan of its day. Porsche widened the stance, added the V8 and suspension and braking system from the SL500 models. Each car took 18 days to complete. Only produced from 1992 thru 1994 with a total of 10,000 produced. Just under 500 were shipped to the US in 1994. Very hard to find and especially at this price. Special features were done to this car when new. Rentech exhaust and upgrades to the motor. AMG wheels. Good overall condition. Call for more details. A great deal at $9900.00. 714-610-6223 Ken or 714-610-6227 Steve.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

Think we'll need to have one of the SoCal crew check this one out. (Karl?) Can't tell if that's 702 or 744 paint, 275 or 278 interior... pretty sure it's some combination of that though.

UPDATE 1: Based on Ernesto's information, it appears to be 702+275.

UPDATE 2: VIN confirms the car is 702 Smoke Silver paint with 275 Parchment interior.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, 145kmi, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

Looks like 702 to me, especially with the light interior. I think Hi Power, szvook, or TerryA are closest. I could possibly check it out over a weekend.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, 145kmi, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

I just talked briefly with the current owner of this car. Indeed it is a 702 color with light interior. Car was repainted and overall cosmetic condition was described as "good". There are no service records of this car and according to the seller it was modified by Renntech in New York for a Law Enforcement Department in Florida. Car has some modifications form Renntech (exhaust system, air filter box and ECU Chip) and other gadgets like integrated radar and strobe flashing lights. Owner was driving this car to meet another interested buyer at a local mechanic for a a PPI. I was told that post at Craiglsit generated lots of interest.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, 145kmi, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

I can't come out to play for the next 2 or 3 weekends, too much work...

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver / Parchment, 145kmi, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

I'm sorry about not being able to get further information for potential buyers. I was hoping that this will be a 744 Brilliant Silver color and also interested to find out the extension of the modifications made. Not really looking for a previously tuned car without documented history and Law Enforcement heritage. I am concern about the abuse that this E500 might have on such working conditions.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver / Parchment, 145kmi, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

Looks like a classic 702 over 275 (smoke over 'shroom) combo, to me. :mushroom1:

Hmm, that is very interesting . Never know/think that US gov. buys import cars especially for law enforcement . Would be a nice car to drive in ex USSR with strobe lights and radar. It also should have police loudspeaker as well ....

Could be a put together story to generate interest on the car... or to justify modifications like the "strobe :shocking: lights". Thank you but not my "cup of tea".

I don't know, it looks more like 744/278 to me. That is based on the photo where the paint color looks more silver and the cladding is not brown enough to be a 702 car with mussel grey cladding.

Has anyone actually seen this car in person?

Nah, this car was just bought by a local Police department either new or used and modified for mostly publicity I'll bet. It's quite common here in CT where Police departments will buy like a Firebird and trick it up with lites, vynil graphics like 'Don't Do Drugs' or 'Click it or Ticket' and parade it around at all sorts of events. Our State Police also have some high end European cars (could be confiscated cars for all I know) that they use in undercover highway patrols which also have all the flashing lites hidden, etc.

RennTECH in NY? Huh? 8-)

I know this car and it's owner. He also has another 500E. I met him a Cars & Coffee Irvine a couple of years ago. The exterior I would say is Champagne you guys will have to come up with the number. I cannot remember the interior color. I do have some pictures of it and his other 500E parked with my car at C&C.

From what I remember it was average in appearance. It does have the funny lights and the RennTech back box. Still had the stock resonator in place. I don't think it has any other performance mods.

The owner gave me the same story about it belonged to Florida law enforcement Narcs.

Jeff or Matt Stockwell have had some dealings with him also but it has been awhile. I have not seen him in over a year.

I Will see what pics I have.

$8k doesn't sound to unreasonable to me.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver / Parchment, 145kmi, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

I have seen this car in Florida many years ago, just spoke with the owner, offered him 7800$ in cash , he said that sold it

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver / Parchment, 145kmi, $9900 (Santa Ana, CA)

When I spoke with seller earlier in the day, he said someone was scheduled to look at the car. They bought it.

For future purposes:

He said Carfax shows original Miami car. Light conversion was done by TechoCar in NYC. All strobes/red and blue lights are hidden in turn signals and under flip up rear license plate. Maybe undercover car, maybe PPG Pace car (respray was mentioned somewhere above)? Rear window regulator/motor was failing. Back glass starting to delaminate at the edges. Front end rebuild was next on his list of things to do (bushings are deteriorating, thought shocks were OK).

My detailed records on this car are as follows. I apologize for all of the files attached.

Cheers,
Gerry

1994 Mercedes E500/Built by Porsche - $20900 (Rancho Santa Margarita)
1994 Mercedes Benz E500, with 150k miles.
Only 1,528 were built for the U.S.A. from 1991 to 1994, and this car is the last year of production.
This was the last year of the "wide body" E class for Mercedes. This car is Smoke Silver with Tan interior. The seats have been re-dyed and the look fantastic. The car has had a ton of recent service. The only thing that I know doesn't work is the driver's side seat switch. It works but not all the time. The car has newer style AMG wheels on it with new tires. The car does have books and manuals.
I have a paint meter, and I metered the car. The car is mostly original paint except for the hood and trunk.

Jeff

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

This car was #3 of 393 total imported to the USA for the 1994 model year... VERY early chassis number for a "facelift" car. AutoCheck (attached below photos) indicates the car spent 10 years / 100kmi in New Yawk, so take a peek underneath.

Re: fs - 1994 E500

That smoke silver looks amazing with color matched lowers - I've never seen it done and it's way better looking than I expected!!!!

I agree. This is giving me expensive ideas about my car...

Interesting that the seller says he thinks paint is original except hood and trunk. Smoke silver is a difficult color to match so my first guess was the whole car was painted and the lowers were done at that time.

What do the experts think about effect on resale value and also quickness of sale for a car with lowers painted to match the rest of the car (assuming we aren't talking about a pristine low mileage garage queen)? It seems like painted lowers generate a lot of comments here, but I wonder whether it generally turns buyers off or on, or if it's not really a big concern. From my perspective, I'd see it as a minor plus if it looks good but it wouldn't be a big consideration.

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

Melville, I definitely think the car is primarily original paint with the exception of the hood and the trunk. Study the hood and the trunk you can see these colors are different from the fenders/quarters. The lowers are also not a dead on match if you study the back bumper, it's pretty damn close though I would say it was a job well done. If you have a low mile garage queen, I wouldn't tamper with it. My 138k mile car I bit the bullet and color matched, my 78k mile 1 owner however I have not done it yet (as much as I prefer monotone) I am still on the fence about it as I'm afraid it may affect future value.

Regards,
Chris

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

Assuming it's not a low-mile collector car, where any modifications at all hurt the value... I'd say most of the time, matching lowers are a minor plus. But it depends on the paint color. IMO, for black (either 040 or 199) it's a huge plus, as the stock gray lowers were not particularly attractive to my eyes. For other colors where the contrasting lowers were closer in shade, it may not be as big of a deal.

This may be the first 702 car that I've seen with matching lower and I agree, it looks pretty darn good!

back on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/181976951017 <--Auction ended Jan-4, 2016. Reserve auction, no BIN option. Reserve met at $12,000. (!!??)

Mercedes Benz E500/Built by Porsche

This car seems to be an early production based on the Carfax. The car looks to have been sold new in New York. It has had 4 previous owners and Carfax shows no accidents reported or mileage issues. It was in New York, Texas, Florida, and most recently CA. I purchased the car personally in 2014 in Southern CA. I immediately put the car in my shop, TruSpeed Motorcars, and had the car completely gone through. I can provide a list of what was done. Since it was my car, I had everything it needed performed. The only thing that I know that doesn’t work properly is the driver’s side seat switch.

The cosmetic condition of the car is above average given its’ mileage and age. I have put a paint meter on the car and the only body panels that have been painted are the hood and trunk. The car does have some small rust spots in 2 or 3 areas. At some point in its’ life it had lights put under the license plate (red and blue). They worked when I bought the car, but I disconnected them. I have put later model AMG Wheels on the car, and they are perfect.

I have a set of books and manuals for the car, but they are not original to the car.

I have more photos of the rust spots and the lights if someone would like to see them.

Thank you and please email with any questions.

I'd sure like that RENNtech muffler... airbox looks nicer than most as well.

Sure hope they didn't cut the front bumper to install whatever that thing is (laser jammer?).

It's not bad - I've seen worse. Probably all stock. I agree, a thinner spring pad might be just what the Honcho would order...

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

You offer was more then generous. What does he want?

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

Good possibility he did sell for $12k but you never know. The seller had a low mileage 993 C2S in which I made a fair offer for and he refused. A month later he sold it for less than what was offered...

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

You think he would at least call you on your offer

Re: FS: 1994 E500, Smoke Silver/Parchment, 150kmi, $21k (So Cal, CA)

$12k seems too low to me. Even given the mileage and mods.

If he really did sell it for $12k, that is well under market value, IMO. Who knows, maybe they are doing some weird deal to avoid sales tax or something, and the actual sale is $12k plus an envelope full of cash on the side. If someone did snag it for $12k, that was a helluva deal.

If the new owner finds this thread, shoot me an email if you wanna sell that noisy old RENNtech muffler! :D

I think I'll hold onto the Renntech for now :D. I bought the car and am looking forward to having it delivered later this week. Was surprised I was able to pick up the car at that price. Had PPI done and car checked out well. Btw thanks to captruff for the referral of Matt at leistung autohaus for the PPI. He really knows these cars! I've followed the forum for years and am thankful to finally be an owner.

That looks like a great deal, but the car is heavily modded and has rust and a long history. It's kinda the opposite of "no rust, no paint, no stories."

Probably a good deal nonetheless at $12k. Welcome, Lsbm.

Cheers,

Thanks... I think?? Lol the car had lowers painted and someone installed lights under rear plate wasn't a big deal for me. I would've prob painted lowers anyway.

Congrats! If Matt did the PPI and gave the car a thumbs up, it was probably a great deal at $12k. Still can't believe the seller came down from over $20k and after turning down $15k previously. Timing is everything, right? BTW - where are you located, if the car is being delivered?

:welcome3:

Congrats! When you get the car delivered let us know how the color matched lowers look in person. Looks great in pictures but quality of a color match can best be judged in person. This car is making me think of adding a color matching paint job to my to do list.
