Looks nice in general. The muffler tips are a Japan-only thing, which is odd. The corrosion visible on the fan blade, valve covers, and other engine metal is concerning. I'd want a full batch of photos underneath with the car on a lift. And, the serpentine belt is fraying on the edge, indicating something amiss there as well. At least it appears to have correct E500 headlights, or at least the lenses. Where was this car between 11/2002 and 63kkm, and today?

$400k ask seems absurd in the current market. This isn't a Hammer and never will be. Seems like someone took the no-mile car that Seinfeld briefly owned, and used that as a basis for the near-half-million ask. Anyone recall what the record high sale price has been for a 957+958 previously?

Interesting datacard footnote. Someone re-added the tunk badges, so code 260 is no longer valid.

The codes 228, 260, 581, 810, 816, 819, 882, and 884 were retrofitted by the customer B+B Automobile.

228 - AUXILIARY HEATER
260 - TYPE DESTINATION ON TRUNK LID - ELIMINATION
581 - AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL
810 - SOUND SYSTEM
816 - RADIO REMOTE CONTROL FOR RADIO
819 - CD CHANGER IN THE TRUNK - ALPINE
882 - PASSENGER COMPARTMENT PROTECTION (INFRARED)
884 - TRUNK LID ADDITIONAL LOCKING MECHANISM (HZS)

Actually, AMG had a performance exhaust which was only available to "export" markets. Not sure where they drew back then the line: I.e Germany, EWG, .... The exhaust (chrome) end you could however have fitted as well on the German versions.

AFAIK there was no actual "performance" from the modified muffler. It was strictly decorative tips. It's possible the mufflers were cut open and the internals were modified, but I've never seen any evidence of this.

Does anyone have proof that the AMG-chrome-tipped mufflers were available as an option in Germany/Europe for the E60, or any E500E? I've ONLY seen these on AMG Japan vehicles.

:klink:

It was an AMG aftermarket muffler. Meaning you would have to go to Affalterbach and have it installed there. The muffler was not legal in Germany due to noise emissions. Not sure if it had any performance impacts, but you are probably right on this. In Germany they would add the chrome (deco) tipps for you.

I need to check if I can still find the offer and pricelist I got in 1997 for my E500. The two options I found worth going for was a mechanical diff-lock (Lamellensperre) and the ASR switch off.

I would put this car even at sub-$200K -- perhaps $175-180K. But you are right, these high-end "boutiques" like Copley and Hatch & Sons seem to have enough of a well-heeled client base that dropping $300K on a garage bauble (I don't think this particular example reaches that level, but....) is no big deal.

$400k is enough to secure a very nice SLR and still have room for a discreet four-door like a mint-condition S65 W221.

With all due respect to the “built by Porsche” narrative and the “pre-merger, 1 of 45” storytelling — the choice seems rather obvious.

Then again, from their perspective, they only need one lunatic buyer, not a hundred.

Automatic climate control has been retrofitted?? Sounds too substantial to be plausible.. And with all the other (alleged) retrofits, this car has been a bit too picked-apart to make it worth the top dollas (and then some) in my opinion. Granted, it does look nice in the pictures shared.

Also, did 124s ever come with an IR-monitoring system for the interior? Where is the sensor(s) located if so?

No IR-monitoring for the interior, just an IRCL remote key fob to unlock the vehicle as you walk up to it.

I noticed the ACC retrofit claim as well. Seems unlikely, at best. Kind of a downgrade IMO.

:seesaw:

Yes, but IMHO is was an extra cost option (at least during 1994 = the production year of the Ltd's, may be also on pedestrian 036's and other 124's produced in other years): code 882 (but only in combination with code 551); at least 70 Ltd's have that option code specified on their data cards whilst others don't (there doesn't seem to be any relation to the order location).

Edit: Just noticed in the 1994 Price List it's actually called "Abschleppschutz" (= something like: protection against unwanted towing), which costed only 172.50 Deutschmarks extra.... No idea why in english it shows up as "passenger compartment protection (infrared)" which is suggesting something different altogether
Where is the sensor(s) located if so?
Dunno

What exactly is this IR-monitoring system for the interior? I'm not familiar with it, on the 124 chassis (or even 210, or any 1990's model).

You mean InfraRed Remote Locking? IMHO that was standard on any W124 of the later production years (I have never seen any MOPF2 without it)
Yes - IRCL = InfraRed Central Locking. This was never offered in North America on any 124 chassis. I did not realize it was standard on MOPF2 in Europe!

If you can get the SLR to run. the Issue with the "1 of a kind" fuel pump is global and there is not replacement for the sealed unit for the past 4 years.

Looking at the sale prices of much inferior cars and the demand for valuable MOVABLE assets, the market will continue to rise along with other precious commodities.

Look at this .w210 pre Mopf E420 from 97.The switch means "Abschleppschutz" this is for stolen weels with an elektronic switch for leveling Tilt sensor.

And the other pic are Infrared "Innenraumüberwachung" Interior Surveillance. The Mopf away was this intergated into the Ceiling lamp. But this infrared System never seen into a W124

Isn't the towing protection to avoid car alarms blaring if the car is towed? At least that's what I learned from the movie "Twins" back in the day:

I had no idea 124s were ever offered with this, but at least this is a simpler system to implement than the IR-monitoring of the interior which would require something visible inside the car.

Dunno, the only thing I could find about code 882, is that it was only possible to order i.c.w. code 551 (break-in & theft alarm with immobilizer) which costed 920 Deutschmarks extra (in 1994), see: W123 Preisliste Nr (sorry, only in german....)
It was the same for newer models where alarm systems were divided into two option codes, just surprised to see it for the 124s.

The switch means "Abschleppschutz", this is for stolen weels with an elektronic switch for leveling Tilt sensor.
So code 882 has nothing to do with passenger compartment protection. The code 882 description in lastvin.com (on top of thread) is nonsense. It's nothing more than Abschleppschutz, and starts showing up (for the first time) in MB-pricelists in 1994

LastVIN is great for most option codes, but the rarer ones often gets mixed up - I literally just looked at an S123 with the option code 230, which LastVIN claimed was for a remote control for the auxiliary heater (which the car didn't even have). Turns out it was for a different rear end ratio..

I don´t want to be captn obvious, but to be absolutely sure we checked it in vedoc. Those are later added options-

Deep Respect for this executed /murdered car

It is not an E60. No adds in Datacard as the E60 Limited above. Everything else is cool.
There are couple of 6 liters out there with no changes in Datacard, i actually don´t get why do you refer to this car.
