1994 Mercedes SL 60 AMG VIN CHECK NEEDED

Good day,

I was looking around the internet and found this 1994 Mercedes SL 60 AMG for sale in Ontario, Canada. It is a Japanese import. the VIN is WDB1290671F111408. I tried doing a VIN check, but it comes back as an SL 500. Would anyone on the Forum be able to look into this VIN for me and determine if it is an SL 60 AMG??

Attached are several photos of the car.

Many thanks in advance for any help.
AL

Datacard attached. It's not a factory AMG, as there is no code 957. However, it could have been converted to 6.0L by AMG Japan. Need more documentation beyond an AMG badge on the boot lid.

Since you are local, go test drive it. The 6.0 motor is a whole lot stronger in low/midrange torque than the 5L engine. And look for more evidence of the 6L conversion while you are seeing it in person.

Thanks gsxr, the car is about an 8hr drive from my place. I'm trying to gather more info to see if it would be worthwhile to go and look at. If it's a true SL60 AMG, I probably would go and look at it.

Kind regards,

True... but the lack of AMG decals on the valve cover, and also above the headlights on the crossmember, would make me want to get more confirmation. Also odd that a seller of an AMG car isn't showing any of the AMG decals which should be present on the car. Japan conversions were usually even more heavily decaled than the factory AMG cars!

:scratchchin:

I have texted and e-mailed with the owner for the pictures, which I got. He is adamant that it is a true AMG, but queries about documentation supporting it go unanswered. I recently sent an e-mail regarding the engine decals and even the stamped codes on the front of the engine block for an example, but no replies so far.........:scratchchin:

AMG Japan often put a sticker somewhere - often on the left door frame. Ask the seller if he knows about such a sticker. If so, you've got confirmation on that the car is more AMG than just a decal "improved" car. But it is quite hard to find out more with JDM cars in my experience.

Hi Bing,

I sent a photo of the stamped block on the front of the engine as shown above, from the E60 noted in earlier posts from Silverstar, to the seller yesterday. we'll see if he gets back to me about it and any additional photos.

Thanks for the notes for the 2 threads

Just FYI... SilverStar had a newer car with 119.98x engine. I'm not sure if the older 119.97x engines have the AMG engine number stamps in the same location or not.

:wormhole:

I think Arnt's (500AMM) 6L has a stamp somewhere at the back of the engine? But I've never been able to verify this myself when checking out a 6L conversion, and I've looked at few!

Thread update,

Just a quick note to say that I have not had any info from the seller showing concrete proof the car is an SL60. He did say it is in storage and will look for the engine stamp when he has a chance and get back to me. Needless to say I am not holding my breath. If I ever get any info I will reply again to this post.

Cheers,
:detective:

Good Day,

Just a quick note to update this thread.

I never received any additional info from the owner that the car is an SL60. I gave up on it a long time ago. Seems to be a lot of smoke and mirrors

Thanks to everyone for additional things to look for, and interest :)

Kind regards,
Al

Hi,
I thought from the beginning that it looked like an sl 60 but in my memories they were produced only in 1997 and after, not in 1994.
More investigations needed here...
