In Japan (having around 125 million inhabitants) there seems to be an avid 1990's MB-enthousiasts culture going on. Each time when I see 036's on offer for export, I can't stop wondering: why is nobody locally interested in those particular (often low mileage) cars? Why going through the trouble of selling them via these export companies or auction houses to get rid of them? It always makes me somehow suspicious. Particularly as I can't read nor check any of the maintenance documentation, if any. This particular one could be a truly brilliant car (no pun intended), but to me it seems a can of worms. Am I missing something here?

Maybe it's more money on export vs. domestic sales? Most of the Japan cars for sale, at least 036 cars to be more specific, doesn't have much records if any, but I cannot recall anyone being screwed on a Japan import either. The cars seems to match the sales criteria overall and they're for the most in pretty good condition. I guess a Japanese member here could chime in with some info around this.

I don’t know the specifics (how much at what age), just that taxation for older cars at one point becomes cost prohibitive in Japan, so exporting becomes a way to significantly increasing an otherwise very limited customer base

Tim, you are correct. It is very expensive to keep using older cars in Japan. When I lived there 15 years ago parking in an appartment block was $200 a month & the "Shaken" ( Tuv test/MOT) was ridiculously expensive, because they remove the wheels to check brake pads etc.
Also, they can sell them for more $$$ by exporting. So unless you are mega rich & the car is worth millions, it becomes too expensive to keep cars like the E500E.
A friend of mine who had a Ferrari 250 GTO/ Mercedes 300SL/427 Cobra & other mega buck cars kept them in a second house, with all the walls removed inside to accomodate the cars.

Also Japan is driving on the left side of the road, which of course means just like in the UK that these cars demands a true enthusiast.

Every time I see a UK car for sale in Sweden, it's almost always super cheap, even more so since Brexit. They are just not in demand, who wants to sit on the right (wrong) side in the car? Only if you're mainly doing track days since most tracks have a majority right handers.

And I'm only talking fun cars here, I don't peruse the classifieds looking for normie cars. :)

I just bought this E500 Limited from Japan. It's an intriguing car . Should take 1 month or so to come to Miami. Has Japanese service records that I will have to translate when it gets here. Has some modification from what I can see

1- DB Fender Duct
2- Stainless steel muffler
3- Triple timer
4- Front lip carbon spolier
5- Front Strut Brace.

Makes me wonder if there is chipI won't know until it gets to me . Anyone with more experience can tell me why would someone install a 3 timer? picture I have is not vert focused so can't see well.

its not turbocharged so maybe its just a logistical timer ? or is there any specific modification that would require a 3 timer ?
It has a cool umbrella that comes with it :)

Thanks

Congrats on the purchase! The 3 gauges in place of the passenger airbag are not timers. They are:

Coolant temp
Vacuum
Voltage

See photo below (from post #1 on this thread). That appears to be an aluminium Wiechers strut bar, btw... NLA now, only available in steel.

Congratulations on the purchase. I like this unique vehicle.

There is a video review of this car (in Japanese) that can be found on YouTube.
