We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

We hope you will become an active contributor to the community!

2016 International W124 500 Meeting - UK Edition

It's late, I'm lost! So a date is actually fixed? Somewhere in Germany?
As an ex-Brit, in France, I'm not keen on exchanging Alps/German autobahns for SE England, but I do see that those based in SE England might see it differently.
So a definite date: the end of June?

Ahmad, have you had a lot of mail coming to the in box? Seems like many here were taken by surprice, I was hoping for a more vivid conversation
on this thread. A lot of potential participants seems to be hiding away, so come on, a chance in a lifetime, is coming up. Roger

Roger, Gradually everyone who can attend will show interest. I have a few surprises this time which I will announce as things progress, one of them I already mentioned which is the fact that I am already here! unlike what happened in the two previous events where the organizer couldn't make it!! With that sorted, things will be well organized this time and people would not get lost!

What we need to see is more Scandinavian participation (since you guys have most of the 6.x car) . There are vessels from Denmark and the Netherlands to the ports east of London, from there its about 2 hours drive to any of the suggested venues.

For Germans, for example its a 6 hour drive from Stuttgart to Calais, onto the Euro tunnel, then a 1 and half hour drive.

So Guys, start spreading the news.. that 1 pint = 1/2 a liter : D

surely you miss the Great British weather by now, no? :D

18th or the 25th June, voting is open till the weekend on this... though everyone that got back to me prefers 25th (Good wood weekend)

If you would like to participate, send a PM with you Name / TEL / Country / and a bit about your 124036 (year,mods..)

No no, not Germany, Great Britten it is, Autobahns and Autorouts you have on the way there.

Christian, offcourse you can attend, you and a lot of Germans are needed to fill up the numbers too. Are the forums in informed there in Deutchland?
In the W124 club there must be one or two 500eds also I belive, You will fancy a pint of Lager.......

I will be there. I organised the last meet in the UK in December/January time and around 4 E500's turned up and 1 E60 AMG - lots of W124s too. We did it at MB World but the weather was horrible and we didn't let them know in advance. If we plan in advance I think we can get 12-15 UK cars to join (probably most of the cars in the UK to be honest).

If you want me to look into MB World Brooklands in Surrey more seriously I can look into the options with a view to letting them know in advance.

Either dates in June work for me and i'm happy to faciliate in any way I can.

Hi Bilal,

Welcome aboard! Your help is appreciated by everyone here. As for MB World, talks are already under way with higher management there. We have a bit of argument on the date but hopefully it will be resolved as 25th would be even more encouraging for participants as its the Goodwood festival week. They can attend the 500 event on Saturday and Goodwood either Sunday or Friday.

We need German, Russian, Scandinavian members to spread the news in there forums.

Gents. List of Participants and confirmed date coming up later this week.. need everyone to send me E-mail if they haven't so I can make the list.

Cheers

Let's settle on a date, as I'm starting to make my travel plans for the latter half of June. Y'all are going to be cutting into my travel plans in Italy....so let's get the date set. June 25 it is?

:jono:

Gentlemen, Quick Update:

- Date is Set: 25 / 06 / 2016 Saturday. Voting is Closed.

- I am sending updates via E-mail to everyone who has already contacted me, if you are not receiving an update please let me know.

Cheers

German "part" does not like it so far and will most likely not participate. We will make out own meet and stay in the motherland. We dont want any visits at shows or museum or whatsover... On last years meet and the year before, i'd say 90% voted for having future meets with more drive arounds and more staying at the cars and having talks about it + maybe fiddling around and diagnosing some of the cars. Stuff like that. Not visiting any museums or shows whatsoever. We meet for the 500E and not for other cars or non 500E related shows/etc

+1
I'm agree with Christian !
In fact, i'm not very interested by museums too.
However i should be really interested by

meets with more drive arounds and more staying at the cars and having talks about it + maybe fiddling around and diagnosing some of the cars.

Perhaps for next years ?

Well for me it's as far to travel to the UK as it is to Germany (and no ferry/tunnel either); especially if you apply a little man-maths!
Christian K: What is proposed by the "German 'part'", some nice Alpine passes? Are you still thinking end of June?
David

OK...so this still seems like it's a fractured situation between the "UK" people and "continent" people. The art of compromise would be a good thing here, and honestly just settle on a single meet for the June time frame, and perhaps have another one a bit later in the year elsewhere.

Given the politics that seems to be involved, I'm going to cancel my earlier plans to attend any European E500E gathering and just continue on with my original vacation plans for Italy in late June. And of course to do the Alpentour the weekend of June 17-19, which IS planned and IS happening. (Video from 2015 Alpentour is here: http://1drv.ms/1lA3szN )

Sorry for the false alarm on my earlier posts, about my intent to attend.

Cheers,
Gerry

Listen up! If the supporters of the UK leaving the EU get their way in the EU referendum on 23rd June, then the question of holding an International Meet in the UK will be academic, 'cos they won't let any of you "foreigners" in!

(Sorry - I just couldn't resist that!).

Let's hear it for staying in!

After the dismal performance of all those clairvoyant experts predicting the outcome of the last UK election it's good to see they're mostly keeping quiet on the EU Referendum result. We were never asked whether we wanted to join, only, years later, whether we wanted to stay in. I think the "in" vote can probably count on some of 300,000 Brits living in France (if these Brits can be bothered to vote and if you've only lived in France for a few years)! Brits living long term in France can't vote. For us Brits living in France an "out" vote would open a very messy can of worms; a field day for useless bureaucrats.
The EU bureaucracy as applied to cars and to trailers is already a nightmare (ask me how I know); it would be worse if we vote "out".

Hi Bilal,

Best to E-mail me as I need to explain what the current situation is.

Would like to welcome everyone, but unfortunately we need to maintain the 500 theme both for the media and for the venues. They are welcomed to attend though : )

Where are the pics from Sunday's meeting ??

Cheers Bro

Hi Ahmed - do we have a place for the meet?

Also are other W124's welcome?

Bilal

I will be in Florida this year during the planned meet unfortunately but hopefully next year I would bring my 500E also over on the Dublin / Holyhead Ferry.

Since it used to be your car It would be cool to show you around it and see the other 500's there myself.

Update:

I agree things are going slow here and my apologies for not updating sooner, I have some difficulties with booking a Venue. Our first choice was M-B World, although they agreed on hosting the event but later said they can't host us on the 25th of June.. 12th of June is their suggested date. Communication takes weeks with them !!

We have three choices:

1- Change the date to the 12th of June
2 - Choose another venue (Preferably around Surrey or Yorkshire as they have the best driving routes)

For option 2 I am looking into the possibility of participating in the Mercedes-Benz concours in Milton Keynes on the 18th of June. This we will know about this coming week.
Another option would be a drive through the scenic Yorkshire dales with our star/end points being the many castles in the area for photoshoots.

Your thoughts on this Gentlemen.

OK with 12, 18 or 25 June surprisingly but the diary is filling up quick so need to nail down the venue to allow forward planning. 12 June might be too soon for the others but lets see if they chime in.

Dear All,

Finally! Its sorted.

The 2016 International W124 500 meeting will be held at the 2016 Mercedes-Benz National Concours. 18/06/2016 9AM. A whole day of W124 500’s and everything M-B!
The event is held at the Mercedes-Benz UK headquarters in Milton Keynes (About 1 hour north of London) and is the most important event in the M-B Club UK calendar.. Hundreds of Mercedes-Benz cars on display and thousands of spectators.
Our cars will have a special display area and those of us who are M-B Club UK members are eligible to compete in the Concours.

- To participate please E-mail me and I will send you the Concours entry form. Deadline is 1st of June, all participants must complete the form and E-mail it back to me and I will post it to the Concours management (group entry).

First name of Participant list:

Hi, Please E-mail me with your details so I could have the form sent to you.

For participants from continental Europe:

There are a few ways to get to England with you cars, first is the Euro tunnel from Calais (then 2 hours Drive).. but if you never want to drive your nice car through Calais then the ferries are your best bet. There are ferries from Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and Belgium. Arriving either in Ipswich, Felixstowe, Dover, Ramsgate and Harwick.
From there its around 2 hours drive to Milton Keynes (Mercedes-Benz UK HQ). Ferries are around 300Euros for both ways (Return).. but saves you the fuel cost and mileage. The also arrive the same day.

For Participants from North of England:

Its around 2 to 3 hours drive depending on where you are, Milton Keynes is on the M1. a few of us can convoy if going there on the same day.

If you would like further information please PM or E-mail.

Dear All,

Please note that I am submitting the forms this Friday. Mostly UK participants!

On a brighter note, Mercedes Enthusiast magazine is on board to do an article about the W124 500s that will participate...one in particular will feature extensively in the July Edition ; )

We are set!

For everyone who can't attend with their cars, you are welcome to attend the Mercedes-Benz UK National Concours on the 18th of June in Milton Keynes (1hour from London).
Competition starts at 10AM and ends at 3PM. The concours organizers have announced a "Special W124" class for the competing 500s.

Getting the Red Baron ready, unrestored classic cars are so difficult to prepare!

Hi everyone,

We had a great day yesterday at the Mercedes-Benz UK National Concours! My first Concours participation as well.
Thanks to everyone who attended as part of the w124 500 meeting, I hope everyone enjoyed the day. Unfortunately we only had cars from the UK which reduced the number of participating cars. Nonetheless the 130 other M-B cars on show (Mostly from the 1980s and 1990s) made it a great day for everyone.

Pics later today, including the special class winner

I just realized I did not do well with the photography :(
Bilal help me out here bro.

No problem Ahmad - took loads of photos. First the non E500E's, then the E500E's, then my 500E :). Not putting all the photos up but if anyone wants the link to the full album give me a shout.

Thanks for organising the day, great turn out generally and some beautiful parts. Some of those classics are truely epic, the 300SEL 6.3 took my breath away - I want one!

Enjoy!

Brilliant shots Bilal, you actually shot most of the wining cars.
Lots of amazing cars, that Silver 190SL was a dream, there was a white 560SEL with burgundy interior as well. The 6.3 belongs to the club chairman.

And your car mashallah very classy.

I will get a few outstanding things sorted for the meet in september ; ) , see you soon.

Great pictures from the MB Concours event!

However, I think we should ask ourselves why so few E500E owners turned up as participants in the 2016 International Meet which was hosted at the same event.

I could not attend (because of the fairly late change in the date of the meet), so maybe its a bit unfair for me to ask the question. However, given that last summer's "ordinary" (i.e. not a specific E500E event) W124 meeting in Stratford on Avon attracted 12 E500Es, it's very disappointing to see only 5 or 6 cars (all from the UK) attend a special "International" meet of the marque!

What can be done in the future to encourage a higher level of participation, not just from the UK, but also from Europe?

Hi Stephen,

I have already described the issues faced by participants from Europe in getting to the UK, and everyone agrees that it is an issue as ferries services have been reduced in recent years as well as the really high cost, and the situation in Calais is too risky.. Obviously no one wants to be carjacked coming to the UK.

As for UK participants, Mr.Keers the chairman of the Club UK pointed out all the club admin personnel who own E500E, I was also approached by many participants who mentioned that they own an E500E or an E60.There could have at least been 10-12 more cars matching the 2014 European meeting, but since it is a concours everyone was bringing their best condition cars to win and this I think was a deciding factor. I am sure you know Sully who owns an E60, he brought in a W126 500SE with 24,000miles and won the sedan class... it was an amazing car!

As you know there are only a few dozen E500E in the UK, while thousands of E500E in mainland Europe and the biggest ever gathering was organized by myself (sitting in Kuwait) in 2014 at the Brabus HQ and we had about 18 participants. If it was part of a concours event we would have lost a lot of them due to the required preparation time needed to get the cars ready and the stringent judging criteria which can disappoint many people. There were standard W124s on display that were near factory condition! the Beige diesel park in front had 95kmi but looked like new inside out! it was on display at the Mercedes-Benz Museum. So for us to have this number of cars willing to judged I would say we did well.

I would like to thank everyone who attended and everyone that helped out in anyway, I hope everyone enjoyed the event and to see you all soon.

Thanks for the pics, great shots! I will sort mine out and upload soon! Nice to meet everyone.

Thank you for attending Jay, shame you had to leave sooner. I was caught up in the preparation and didn't have time to fully checkout your ride. We drove 3 hours at night and the rain turned the car into a mess!

You had the most awesome wheels of the day !

Excellent coverage.
Is it me or are those brakes on the Burgundy E60 stock E500E bits? Would the E60 not have come with SA's?

The SA brakes did not exist until 1999, introduced on the 129.068 chassis. Assuming any E60 build was done prior to 1999, the car would have stock E500E brakes, or whatever other aftermarket upgrades were available in the mid-90's (i.e., the Alcon or Brembo setups RENNtech offered in the 90's).
