FYI 3rd Brake Light Housing - Cream Beige - 001.820.41.56 - EDIT - STILL AVAILABLE

Does anyone have one of these for sale or hoarded some where? This is the 3rd brake light housing. Not the part with the tabs (which I have) --- I mean the part with the lens and stuff that the front cover snaps on to. I've had to repair mine (which has cracks) with JB Weld one too many times..... This is part 001-820-41-56.

See mine below:

What I need is part 28 in the digram (but I do not need part 29)

Jlaa, usually #29 (rear cover) is broken from sun/UV damage making it brittle... and #28 is generally faded, or has the lens melty. These are hard to find used in good shape. Generally if the rear cover breaks, I don't bother taking #28. But I'll keep an eye out in case I happen to find one. Hopefully someone else has a nice one; remember to confirm it's not from 94-95 USA model year / facelift cars, the color wont match.

Have you considered buying a brand-new one (available in black only) and painting the exterior Cream-Beige?

I had to do the reverse years ago on the Stigwagen, where the 3rd brake light was NLA in all colors. Managed to find a NOS one in Palomino (IIRC) and had to paint it black. Worked like a charm.

:pc1:

Thanks! Right, I broke #29 a few years ago and got a new one that is close but doesn’t exactly match bc #28 has faded. Now it is time for #28 to retire. I have already repainted the top horiz bar matte black to combat lens melty, JB welded the middle of the housing top where they all seem to crack, and now I have a new fissure in the corner as well. :-(

Yes if I cannot find a serviceable cream beige #28, I will paint a new one. I THINK but I am not certain that it would require SEM aerosol color coat code 4224 (pg 4) https://www.semproducts.com/manage/html/public/content/techsheets/sstcl_2009.pdf

The black housing is still available last time I checked and would not look bad if you used it. I did on mine which has the gray interior. I know the housing should be gray but most others don't.

Here's an idea. Buy a black unit and vinyl wrap it in the color you need.

Thanks! Do you know if suffix -6101 is the black color? My EPC shows 9051 as the black color?

-9051 is black, superceded to -7007 which is also black. You can only order -7007.
-6122 is green, and -6101 is likely green as well. Remember to check MB Classic to see if either show available.
Looks like only black and possibly blue may be available. Everything else, your RevParts order will be cancelled.

I am pleased to indicate that MB Classic Center in Irvine has 001-820-41-56-8412!! 8412 at the end indicates Cream-Beige Color. They have eight pcs in stock. Ordering 001-820-41-56 nets you the cover (that commonly has broken tabs) as well as the housing, so now I have a spare -8412 colored cover as well, which I will place on my shelf as a spare.

This is not the first time that I have seen something indicated as "Discontinued" on a Parts Revolution site, and yet, MB Classic Center still carries the part.

The new unit I received was manufactured in 2016, and my first step will be to 303-Aerospace treat the rubber gasket. Pictures below, comparing the new unit with my 27 year old unit. You can see that the 27 year old unit has black horizontal slats that are heat-fatigued, my repainting of the top slat notwithstanding. As well, the 27 year old unit exhibits the beginning of lens-melty-effect. At the same time, you can see the two fractures in my old housing. The middle crack is common; the one in the corner is not.

No need to pay ebay sellers extortionate pricing for crap condition CHMSLs.

...until the last 8 on the planet are gone. :D

Congrats on the score, Jlaa! That is superfantastic.

:wahoo:

Hahahahaha thanks @JwashE. I’ll be fine with my one unit - especially after converting to an LED lamp w/ tripping the bulb out warning .... to avoid heat.
