Third Brake Light

1994 interior code xx4 would be Saddle, which is slightly darker than Palomino.

Most likely you'll need to find a used one of any color and paint it to match your interior.

If the old one is not completely destroyed, your best option is to repair it.

I’m good, thank you. I purchased a nice aftermarket one from Ocoto which was in the color I needed.
This item? The Palomino color will be close, but not quite right for your 1994 model with Saddle interior.

It was nearly the identical color and good quality but lacked the proper reflector and mounts. It had a makeshift foil reflector. Still, far better than any salvage item I could find.

Is it possible to retrofit the original unit's reflector and mounts to the new housing?

Not easily. While the housing was solidly made, it lacked the original’s internal molded standoffs which provide a mounting for the reflector. It should be possible to fabricate and glue something in there to locate the original reflector, i just didn’t have the craftsmanship in me. Something else I have noticed is at night the brake light housing seems to create a halo on the back glass possibly due to the poorer light management.

That's because it doesn't have the rubber seal to seal it to the rear glass, I believe. That prevents light from getting out around the edges and causing exactly the condition that you describe.

One could probably make a seal from a spaghetti-shaped piece of rubber.
That, or just go to the hardware store and buy a foot or two or really small diameter tubing and split it down the length with a razor knife. Press it over the edges, cut it to length, maybe even put a dab or two of superglue on it to secure the ends, and you're done!

Is anyone aware if the small u-shaped clip that holds the third brake light in place is still available anywhere?

The flexible metal+plastic tangs/tabs which make the 3rd brake light a friction fit, are part of the mounting base assembly. A new base includes the 2 flexible tangs/tabs. The plastic portion is often broken and AFAIK they are not sold separately, and are difficult to find used (intact).

:apl:

@gsxr , are the bases still available? Part number? 🙏
I believe all bases for roller blinds are NLA.

Last I checked, there was one color still available for the standard base (without roller blind)... if you only need the plastic/metal tabs, you could buy one of those to raid parts from it. I'm away from my EPC until after the weekend though...

@gsxr , my interior is gray. Any other color would look weird. I am using a black third brake light at the moment... Any further info you might be able to get hold of upon your return is appreciated
