500E exhaust on a 4.2. Any benefits?

Since I will be needing a new cat back exhaust the question in what to replace it with? Are there any performance gains to be had with a 500E exhaust? I saw the replacement rear box is the same part number as the 300 cars. Either Mercedes has done their homework and a 300 rear section flows really well to take care of the 4.2 engine or it’s a compromise. Of course with my car having ignition failure i will need to verify my cats aren’t melted as well. Looking for reasonable ideas. This is a daily so I’m not interested in spending $3000 for exhaust like I did on my Citroen.

There will be ZERO gains. The exhaust systems are identical from manifold to catalyst. The 500E muffler tips will sit a couple inches too low under the rear bumper lip. And the 500E resonator is NLA. The 4.2L engine is not restricted in any way by the section behind the cats.

If you want something different at a decent price, get the Fox cat-back from Germany, with your choice of Y-pipe or resonator.

If your cats are shot... my condolences. Those are NLA and quality aftermarket options are $$$$.

:wormhole:

I looked into the Fox options. I like what I see and sent a email for a shipping quote. I guess the question is to resonate or Y pipe? GSXR have you heard the difference between the 2? thoughts?

I've only heard the resonator option on a 500E, and it sounds good... very slight rumble, still quiet though. I would like to try the Y-pipe and see how much additional rumble is available.

You might inquire how much it would cost to get both resonator *and* Y-pipe, if they'll offer that option. Shipping was reasonable last I heard, I think some people reported under $800 USD delivered within USA? Haven't seen an official quote since the dollar became so strong.

Thanks Dave. I think I will go the resonator route. If I did a manual swap then the Y pipe would make more sense. I will post the shipping quote when they respond for anyone else who is interested. I know the other exhaust I ordered from Germany I had them cut the pipes due to excessive length. Shipping was eye watering before cutting.
