• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

Since its founding in late 2008, 500Eboard has become the leading resource on the Internet for all things related to the Mercedes-Benz 500E and E500. In recent years, we have also expanded to include the 400E and E420 models, which are directly related to the 500E/E500.

We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

We hope you will become an active contributor to the community!

    Sincerely,
    500Eboard Management

What about starting a channel on Facebook (for example 500eboard) where we can gtg, post videos, pictures and just talk? It is of course a small substitute and i don´t think it will interfere with this site wich is a much deeper source of knowledge in one place. Then it is easier to add friends and increase our network along the globe.

It is just a thougt:nobmw:

You can do all of the mentioned activities here. Facebook is good if I want to let all my followers know immediately that I just ate and am heading to the toilet.

On the bright side I suppose that's better than heading to the toilet and then telling us what you ate.... yesterday.

Actually the group Maui is talking about was started by a young (21 or so) guy named Allan. He's a real enthusiast with a lot of good ideas. Not your average kid, he knows what he's talking about and how to do it. And does it !
I see in him the future of the hobby.
If you have time, and so desire, I suggest supporting his efforts. Nothing better for a young person than to have mentors that they respect IMHO.

Just my opinion.

Actually, 500Eboard used to have its own micro-site on Facebook, and it was owned/administered by me.

I shut down and deleted my Facebook account about a year and a half ago, and so the 500Eboard presence on Facebook also went by the wayside, as it is dependent on a member account for its existence.

Honestly, after having been on Facebook from 2006 through the end of 2012 ... I don't know why anyone would want to be on it. It is a colossal waste of time, and from what I hear nowadays from others, privacy continues to erode there while the amount of advertising that is served up continually has dramatically increased.

No thanks. I would rather have everything here on this site, where no one has to deal with ads, and you get the information that you want with no BS. And no one is making ANY money in conjunction with this site, so there are no commercial interests involved. With PeachParts, Banzworld, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc. there is always an undertone of advertising and commercial interests involved.

You have to remember that the ultimate motive of all of these sites is NOT to help enthusiasts with their problems, and to help people solve their problems. The primary goal of all of these sites is to put advertisements in front of peoples' faces. Banzworld is owned by an Internet advertising company. PeachParts is owned and operated by a car parts conglomerate. Google, Facebook, and Twitter are basically advertising companies masquerading as providing a "useful" service (whether it is search engine, social connectivity, or playing videos) to consumers.

If you don't get the big picture of what these sites are all about ... it is all about $$$$$, and if you don't believe me look at their revenues ... you are a fool.

This site has no such interest. I don't sell parts, and I don't ask people for money, nor do I get money from anything or anyone. The motive of this site is pure, and as long as I'm running it, it shall remain so.

Cheers,
Gerry

The thing I love about this site is there are no ads flashing in your face and no wheel sellers filling up every thread.

This site / forum is a blessed relief from marketing and advertising. I appreciate everything involved in keeping it here.

Gerry,
I am actually disappointed to learn that you do not get some kind of compensation for this, though now that you've pointed it out, I don't see how you could given the lack of popups, etc. It is one, but only one, reason why this site is a pleasure. I hope that you are well situated. Other than some recent ranting on BaT, I have avoided these forums like the poison that they often are. After lurking here for a while, I've seen that you and the other frequent contributors are really doing some great and helpful things. That being the case, I've "signed on" put in a couple of cents in here and there. I can't imagine anything that would screw up what you guys have done here more than connecting it with "Social (disease) Media".

All The Best,
Dave

Yep that sums it up....need to go to the toilet, must post on Facebook ;-)

I think you should provide the option for donations, purely on a voluntary basis, that is, nothing in return for a donation nor any type of advanced membership and/or access.

It's a nice thought, but remember when Scott made donations optional when he ran 500Ecstasy. Quite a number of folks did donate, some multiple times. But there was never any accountability about where the money went, and ads were starting to run on the site as well.

The problem is that some folks were still donating at the time the site went down, and there is a lingering bad taste in the mouths of a few folks who did donate right as the site was going down, so they didn't get much for their donation.

I want to avoid any heartburn with regard to people paying out money and not feeling like they got something for it. Even if they donated voluntarily, there is still a reason / expectation for why they donated. I don't want to not live up to expectations, no matter how large or small.

We do have a two-tier access setup, but as discussed before, folks who are active contributors here and who have been around for a while, easily and automatically get this access based on pre-existing parameters. About 90% of the site's content (and 100% of the "fix-it" related forums) is available to anyone who registers. Even non-registrants can see all content; but to view images they have to register.

Couple of reasons for that -- one so images from the site aren't just randomly linked to, and secondly ... if someone finds the site useful or interesting, they're going to register. Even out of the folks who do register, we only see perhaps 50% visit the site more than a day or two after they first register. That tells me that these folks were looking for some specific piece of information, and they registered so that they could see the images, and they got (or didn't get) what they needed and moved on, having solved their problem (or maybe not).

Another thing is that the active contributors / posters here tend to be the folks who are the most valuable members -- they give things back to the community. And in my opinion, they deserve a little extra, in this site's case access to the considerable collection of E500E-related magazine articles and a few other sub-forums that have info of interest to more "advanced" or "enthusiast" owners.

Cheers,
Gerry

Thank you all so much for all the feedback on this one. It is good to get more views and since i run Adblock on my computer and don´t have any adds what so ever i did not thougt of that. My point was just to get all 500eboard members together, not so much to talk strictly about deep, techincal questions but to get a face on all members.

You do a big job running this site Gerry and i am willing to help you in any way i can whether it is by donations or anything else.

Greetings

If someone wants to start a 500E site on Facebook that is certainly their prerogative. I have no interest in such, nor any such site being affiliated with this site. Honestly I don't see any benefits that Faceplant offers to folks that are not available here. Anyone can be a registered member here, can get useful information about the cars (try getting any useful information about the E500E on Faceplant), and nobody is gonna have advertisements flashing in their face here (Adblock Plus or no Adblock Plus).

If "friending" people here is what floats your boat, there is that capability built into the Personal Profile section of the vBulletin software. The Gallery area allows you to upload as many photo albums as you want to. You can also create sub-groups here if you want to. So vBulletin has some of these Faceplant-like capabilities built in, if you want to use/explore them.
