I think you should provide the option for donations, purely on a voluntary basis, that is, nothing in return for a donation nor any type of advanced membership and/or access.
It's a nice thought, but remember when Scott made donations optional when he ran 500Ecstasy. Quite a number of folks did donate, some multiple times. But there was never any accountability about where the money went, and ads were starting to run on the site as well.
The problem is that some folks were still donating at the time the site went down, and there is a lingering bad taste in the mouths of a few folks who did donate right as the site was going down, so they didn't get much for their donation.
I want to avoid any heartburn with regard to people paying out money and not feeling like they got something for it. Even if they donated voluntarily, there is still a reason / expectation for why they donated. I don't want to not live up to expectations, no matter how large or small.
We do have a two-tier access setup, but as discussed before, folks who are active contributors here and who have been around for a while, easily and automatically get this access based on pre-existing parameters. About 90% of the site's content (and 100% of the "fix-it" related forums) is available to anyone who registers. Even non-registrants can see all content; but to view images they have to register.
Couple of reasons for that -- one so images from the site aren't just randomly linked to, and secondly ... if someone finds the site useful or interesting, they're going to register. Even out of the folks who do register, we only see perhaps 50% visit the site more than a day or two after they first register. That tells me that these folks were looking for some specific piece of information, and they registered so that they could see the images, and they got (or didn't get) what they needed and moved on, having solved their problem (or maybe not).
Another thing is that the active contributors / posters here tend to be the folks who are the most valuable members -- they give things back to the community. And in my opinion, they deserve a little extra, in this site's case access to the considerable collection of E500E-related magazine articles and a few other sub-forums that have info of interest to more "advanced" or "enthusiast" owners.
Cheers,
Gerry
