• Hi Guest !

    Welcome to the 500Eboard forum.

Since its founding in late 2008, 500Eboard has become the leading resource on the Internet for all things related to the Mercedes-Benz 500E and E500. In recent years, we have also expanded to include the 400E and E420 models, which are directly related to the 500E/E500.

We invite you to browse and take advantage of the information and resources here on the site. If you find helpful information, please register for full membership, and you'll find even more resources available. Feel free to ask questions, and make liberal use of the "Search" function to find answers.

We hope you will become an active contributor to the community!

    Sincerely,

Finding Links / Topics from Old 500eboard.com

Is there an easy way to cross reference a link from the old "500eboard.com" to the new "500eboard.co"? I have a bunch of saved links and I have had a heard time finding them. For example the old link that had color codes http://www.500eboard.com/forums/wiki_index.php?title=500E-Paint-Codes I can't seem to find in the new "500eboard.co".

I used search function multiple times "Paint Codes" "500E Paint code" "Paint-Codes" "500E-Paint-Codes" and can't find the above version in the new 500eboard.co

I tried just dropping the "m" in the "500Eboard.com" link above....still no luck.

So I guess I have two questions:
1. where do I find the above link in the new forum?
2. Is there a "generic" way to find a topic/thread if I know (save) the link from the old forum?

There must be something basic I am missing.

There is a "redirect" system that is supposed to take outgoing requests to URLs/threads at the old forum and automatically redirect them to the proper thread here (which was imported from the old forum). I've not been able to get that redirect system working like I want it to. I'll see what I can do in the next day or so to get it up and running. Right now I've got it disabled.

Thanks Gerry. I know the migration has been a ton of work and I am sure everyone appreciates it.

Any idea where to find the "paint code" link?

The paint codes were part of the Wiki section of the old site. That has not yet been migrated over to this site, due to the software not being ready for this version of XenForo by the developer. The Wiki software is in "alpha" mode right now, and thus too unstable to use. When it moves to "beta" version, which I expect to happen in the next month or two, I will install it and then we can migrate all of the old Wiki content over to this site.

Until then, you are SOL as far as the paint code information, unless you find it elsewhere on the Internet.

Thanks for the inspiring the SOL comment :thumbsup2: .... I found paint codes and will post them on new thread

Please do not use the "FAQ" sub-forum to make posts or start new threads. Generally we have other sub-forums that are more focused and appropriate for specific topic areas. In the case of paint colors, it would be the "Body Shop" sub-forum that relates to car body/exterior topics.

Thx, I suspect if the redirect system ends up working it will help a bunch of people who may have saved links that contained info that was useful but not so easy to find when using "search".

OK, I've done some work on this today, as well as some research.

Bottom line is that the redirect system will NOT work unless I remove ALL of the old vBulletin files off of the other server.

I cannot do this at the present time, for several reasons:

1) Images that were imported from external links pasted into threads on the old forum (rather than attached directly to the posts) are being imported here every day ... every time someone clicks on a link here that refers to an imported file on the old forum, it grabs it from the old forum and brings it and permanently stores it here. There are nearly 18,000 imported images over there, and this new forum has only grabbed about 6,000 of them so far. We are importing about 100 images a day, based on when people here click on the old threads and fetch the images.

2) The Photo Albums are still being migrated over to this forum from the old forum. This is a manual process, and I'm doing about 5-10 photo albums a day, as I have time. Some albums are only one image, while others have 100+. Each image has to be manually downloaded to my computer from the old forum, and then uploaded to the correct photo album on this forum. Just takes time, but I'm over half-way done.

3) The Wiki software and content is still on the old forum, and has yet to be imported here, because as I mentioned I don't have the WIki software installed here due to immaturity (alpha/development software that has extreme amounts of bugs). I expect this will change in the next month or two, as the developer gets around to completing it.

At this point I am not willing to remove the old forum from the old server ... yet. Google is slowly crawling and indexing this site, and will slowly replace links for the old forum with links to the proper threads on this forum. We are only three weeks in on this forum, and it will take weeks and months for more and more threads to be crawled and indexed by Google.

So, I'm going to put the redirect situation on hold, for now. The trade-offs are just too great at the present time.

MSQ,

The redirect system is now up and working. It should be seamless from today onward.

The exception to this is the Wiki, because it has not yet been installed on this site, and content migrated over from the old site. However all thread + post URLs referencing the old site are automatically redirecting to the correct content on this site. Big win !!

Cheers,
Gerry

Gerry,
Thanks for this. Super helpful. I had saved a bunch of old links that I used in doing homework on various cars over the last x years.
I also appreciate you letting me know.
New site looks good.

Mark

Thanks Gerry. So the short answer is YES.....

The long answer is I flunked the IQ test (i.e. I did not read your post carefully enough where you said wiki is not up yet) and the first link I tried was the one about paint colors (i.e. a wiki entry) and of course it didn't find it  ...then I reread your post.

The other ones I have tried work of course :thumbsup2:

All of my old saved links/favorites are working perfectly, thanks for all the work, appreciated Gerry!

Glad to hear it. Things are coming along with the forum, day by day, week by week. Hard to believe it was 5 weeks ago that I did the switchover, and on about 10 days’ planning and prep.

Gerry I am finding that alot of web links within 500E board are not working. Is there a specific reason for this? Or is there an ungoing - known issue to be addressed at some point

For example - see this post qouted below and try the links. It drops you at the home page.

You need a Ko-ken, Hazet or VIM Tools swiveling 5mm hex socket, 1/4" drive. There's more detail on this in this thread:

500Eboard

500Eboard

The VIM is by far the best deal, with the entire set of hex swivel sockets available on Amazon for around $40-45. The Ko-ken or Hazet is going to run you $25-50 just for the 5mm socket, alone. However it really is impossible to loosen/tighten these rear corner valve cover bolts WITHOUT this socket. A regular 5mm socket on a swivel (wobbly) adapter may or may not work, but most likely won't.

Your power steering leak is 80% chance the short hose between the reservoir and the tandem pump.

More details on how to fix that here:

http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?3902-HOW-TO-Removing-and-re-sealing-ZF-tandem-pump-(SLS-and-power-steering)

To do this job, you're going to need several things:

- a 12mm hex socket
- a set of reverse Torx (female Torx) sockets, to remove the reservoir from its base
- a new metal sealing ring for the hose
- a length of replacement hose
- I'd get new hose clamps (I used 4 of them, MB spec is only two)
- a new paper gasket for the reservoir base - get the cheap AHAZ gasket, not the ~$30 MB one

Cheers,
Gerry

Redirects are currently broken. Gerry mentioned in a different post that he's going to fix this when he has time, but it won't be easy...

I'll do my best to get redirects working again. They have been working on and off since the migration. I am not traveling this coming week, so should be able to get to it.

One complication -- I came within a gnat's hair of losing my left index finger yesterday in a heavy machine (non automotive-related) accident, so I will be recovering from that for the next 8-12 weeks. This will impede my ability to type a bit with my left hand.....

I'd post photos, but they are too graphic of the inside of my finger (bones, tendons, etc.).

Sorry to hear of your injury Gerry. Get well soon

Yes, Gerry, get well soon. Thank God you kept your finger - we're all happy about that - everything else will heal

If you don't mind, please tell us what/how it happened

Update on this.

From a technical perspective, what I have to do is create a new, separate 500Eboard.com domain on the server. Then I have to "park" the 500Eboard.com domain there, and rewrite some code that will automatically redirect all 500Eboard.com URLs/requests to their corresponding URLs on the new .co site. This automatic redirect will use the existing redirect system, which works very well.

I hope to have this done by Sunday afternoon, when I head out for San Diego.

Ideally, after this is done, any 500Eboard.com URL will automatically resolve appropriately to its proper 500Eboard.co counterpart.

My finger is healing. 8-12 weeks is the time it's going to take to get all better. I just went to the Dr. yesterday for a follow-up and they bleieve it is doing as well as can be expected. It is not infected. The finger bones should be healed/mended/rejoined in the next 4 weeks or so. The flesh will take longer to regenerate. I may or may not lose the finger nail, but if I do, a new one will be growing in place right behind it.

I want to let everyone know that redirects are now working again, and this should be permanent and not broken again in the future.

The only exception to this is Wiki links, unfortunately. I'll see what I can do for this.

However, I'm very proud that the redirects once again are operational. Please let me know if you have any problems.

Cheers,
Gerry
