Bombarded with email notifications from old threads

The past week I've been getting bombed with email notifications from subscribed threads that I've previously marked as read.

Whenever I subscribe to a thread, I opt for no email notifications. Why is this happening all of sudden?

I figured it out. Apparently, when I subscribe or reply to a thread with Tapatalk for iPhone or iPad, I automatically get signed up for email notifications. If I use my MacBook's browser to subscribe or reply to a thread, I opt for no updates.

I haven't been able to find the same options on Tapatalk.

My notifications of old stuff has been off the charts as well, I think there was an update to Tapatalk and it is responsible for the notifications...just over the past 3 days. I am on iPhone, ipad and PC but only tapatalk on the IPhone.

I went to General Settings and noticed that the Default Subscription Mode was changed to Instantly, Using Email. I switched it to Through My Control Panel Only. I also went to my Subscribed Threads page and changed all threads to Through My Control Panel Only. Hopefully, that will stem the tide of emails!

Not been able to find that option through Tapatalk yet.

I have had just the opposite happen. All of my notifications stopped working. I have no idea what's wrong, and haven't had time to look.

I don't use Tap-a-talk, even though it is excellent. I am going to dump it then redo my settings and see what happens.

Found the option for email settings in Tapatalk and saw that I now get instant email updates. Turned that off.

Then here...

And finally, here:

Let's see if that works.

So far, so good. Whether that is coincidence or not, I don't know.

Hmmm, not good for me. I'm still getting a large number of updates from old threads that I've marked as read. Very annoying.

Just happened to me as well, not with PM's (which I have disabled), but with email. A forum member sent me an email 10 days ago and I just received it now.

Appears something is up with the software or server...

:callinggvz:

I'll do some digging into this. I don't know if it is an issue with the forum software (I don't think so) or if it is with Tapatalk.

Is there anyone receiving these emails who is NOT using Tapatalk mobile software on your iPhone or Android device? Trying to see if there is a common link isolated with Tapatalk users only.

By the way, I have been getting the same thing too, for PMs as I don't subscribe to individual threads.

Traveling this week, so it might be a few days until I get a fix.

Cheers,
Gerry

I also got the stored email barrage over several days time, but it seems to have subsided.

I'm on tapatalk most times and I don't get email notifications, which I prefer of course! I do remember disabling email updates though.

That would be me. I don't use Tapatalk and don't use any iDevice to access the forum... again, the specific issue I experienced was a valid email but sent 10 days late.

It may be an issue with the email server at the hosting provider. I may need to change to a different email server. It is possible that the email box is full and messages are being released as it empties gradually. I will check this out.

My email notifications for PMs hadn't been working for a few months. Over this past week, I've had emails from previous PMs trickle in chronologically. Gerry, your theory about emails being sent out as the storage empties makes some sense, I suppose. I wonder if it could be some setting that simply delays emails if a thread or pm goes unread for some time duration.

:update:

I checked the main admin email account at the hosting company. It only had 78 MB of mail out of a 2 GB capacity for the email account, so it was well below the limit (sent mail, deleted mail, and inbox). I deleted everything anyway so it is down to 0.

I did notice some returned/bounced mails (probably about 10-12 a day over the past few days) from various accounts, which may have been due to spam filters at folks' email providers. Seems inconsistent but I understand that some email providers do block email received from certain major hosting domains, including the one we use. I can't do anything about that.

I don't think the email capacity was the problem. I'll continue the quest for the problem.

Cheers,
Gerry

A couple of clues.

I just received two emails this morning for private messages that I actually received about 10 days ago. So, it seems there is some sort of delay in sending notifications out. I've also received a lot of emails about PMs from many weeks and months ago. So there is some sort of delay in the sending of email notifications for PMs (and perhaps also delayed threads).

Others who don't use Tapatalk have confirmed that they are also experiencing the same issues, so I don't think it is Tapatalk related. I haven't done any system updates at all in recent weeks, so I don't think anything has changed with regard to the vBulletin software.

So, I think it is an issue with the hoster's email account and the vBulletin interface with it. I will keep looking into the matter and consult with vBulletin Support.

Thanks for your patience.

cheers,
Gerry

I think there may have been some settings in the vBulletin email system configuration that has been causing email to back up in a queue, including thread update notifications and PMs.

I tweaked a few settings and we'll see if things change. Otherwise, I'll configure the settings to use a different email server for the forum.

I just now received a PM email notification for one that I actually received on December 30.

Appreciate everyone's patience with this. It may be a growing pain for the forum (given the e-mail settings that I had, for when the forum was smaller) in terms of the sheer number of messages constantly being sent, getting backlogged in the queue.

:update:
EDIT/NOTE:
Just after I reset the settings and posted the information above, I just recieved about 5-6 email updates, including some emails for PMs that I received TODAY. Some of you also may now receive a slew of backlogged emails as the logjam clears.

I'm not ready to declare victory yet, but please update this thread in the next few days if you continue to receive emails from the forum on PMs that were posted days/weeks ago.

Cheers,
Gerry

Floodgates have been opened, I received 4 emails in quick succession just now thanks Honch!
Were some for recent PMs/threads? Like relating to current (today) stuff?

Any other reports from folks?

Cheers,
Gerry

No, they were all from previous PMs. But I am now completely caught up. My thread notifications are not set to send emails, so I cannot report on that feature.

same here, notifications flooding in...old and new alike.. maybe the big purge is done and she'll be back to normal....:):)

Gerry, thanks for looking into a solution. Since 12/29 I've received 130 emails. The last one that I received today was a Happy Birthday wish from the 500Eboard. My birthday was yesterday, so that should be the last one. Thanks again for running this ship and for the birthday wishes!

Sounds like your backlog is getting caught up, MakeMeister !!

Others seeing a similar ending to the e-mail deluge?

Bueller -- ?!?

Gerry - I've received 2 older PM notifications since yesterday afternoon (...your local time +6 hours). I don't have any thread subscriptions ATM, so nothing on that. And I don't use Tapatalk BTW.
This hasn't been a big problem in my case, 20++ emails at max since new year, but thanks for checking it out!:beerchug:

OK guys - seems we may not be out of the woods yet on this.

Keep the reports coming !! I'm probably not going to be able to do much more before Thursday or Friday as I'm completely slammed today here in San Francisco.

No worries, it gives the appearance that I have bunches and bunches of friends!

Kids are forever ragging me about my "friends" on the 500E board.

FYI:

I just got a PM in the past few minutes and got a timely e-mail on it, as well as a Tapatalk instant notification on my iDevice.

:update:
Just got another timely PM e-mail notification within a couple of minutes.

This is promising.....

Looks like that was the only PM I got from the past, so crisis is averted.

.
No more old stuff at my side either over the later 48 hours - all notifications has been timely. :checkeredflag:

Anyone else still receiving days or weeks delayed e-mail notifications, or is everything all caught up again?

I'm going to call this "issue" fixed, since there seems to be no more bitching ;)

Thanks for the feedback and problem-reporting, all. Can't fix it if we don't know about it !!:detective:

:thankyou:

Cheers,
Gerry
