so my understanding is that all 500e's came w/ a 390 steering wheel. i have a 92 and i sat in a 94, the steering wheel felt smaller. is there an actual size difference?

The size SHOULD be the same on all years, at 390mm. The airbag shape changed during 1992 (USA model year) production from standard to the "triangle" airbag, but the wheel diameter is the same.
I had the non triangle wheel in my 92, which GVZ told me when I met with him that was a sign of a very early production 92. I actually liked that wheel better than the triangle in my 94.
It feels more like a laid back cruiser/"slab" with the old style steering wheel. I think it fits the personality of the car better - to put it simply, when I get in my silver e500 I turn up biggie, when I get in a Porsche I put on some classic rock and drive fast.
And I greatly prefer the larger "non-Sportline" steering wheel. MB was the last manufacturer actually selling a correct size steering wheel in a car, and that ended when they made anything smaller than 400mm standard, IMO...
I like the 390mm triangle version but REALLY wish they had added a vertically-adjustable steering column with the 1990 'facelift'. The 390mm wheel cuts into the view of the speedo right in the freeway-speed range and there's no fix I'm aware of, besides installing a Klink-approved larger MB steering wheel...

On the 126 chassis, MB went from a "proper" sized wheel in the 1989 models (a la my C126) to a slightly smaller diameter wheel in the 1990 models (a la my former 560SEL). It was a subtle change, but having successive years' cars in my possession, I noted it right quick.
