97 W210 E420 M119.985 into 95 W124 E420 M119.975?

I picked up a W124 95E420 (722.3 trans) today as a parts car (I want the wheels for the 92 400E) and then looked at a W210 97E420 (722.6 trans) that was parked up when the owner spilled a coffee in the shifter module some time ago. Supposed ran fine but went in limp mode and somehow the LR window was left down (I didn’t ask why…) or the regulator broke or something. Whatever, aside from that damage it is actually in decent shape aside from the crud. The 95 is actually in very nice condition aside from a few missing bits and a picked-over engine that supposedly had worn cams or something. I’ve got the missing bits (not engine though) but none specifically for that engine. No title but supposedly the 2nd prev owner had one but lost it. I might look into recovering a title somehow rather than parting out the car.

I haven’t actually looked too closely at the 95 engine, and just very quickly at the 97 walking around, so not yet sure what all is there between them.

But driving home with the 95 it got me thinking about getting the 97 (I offered $300, it has nice wheels too, the owner did not resist much) and dropping the 97 engine into the 95. I could probably get the electronics on the 97 engine/trans sorted by a buddy. But then I’m thinking probably easier to just use the intake stuff from the 95 on the 97 engine if it’s intact and working and not have to deal with the trans and ECU differences.

I could probably get the 210 sorted easily enough but that car doesn’t do much for me like the 124.

I also have a smashed slammed running 03E500 (W211) M113 with 722.6 that could be a donor, and I could probably get the electronics sorted out if the combo went into the 124. I saw a thread or two recommending not even thinking about that swap, but a guy can dream, right? I’ll have to look into that more.

Anyway, just some drive time speculations. Any thoughts would be entertained.

Unfortunately all of your ideas would not be practical. Anything is possible but the time invested and the frustrations will not work out in the long run. The W124 would be my focus if you can track down a title. Cam wear on a M119 is not something that happens. Maybe spend some time to diagnose the engine needs and if for some reason if the engine has mech damage find a suitable donor from a 93-95 R129.

The electronics from newer cars is not for the faint of heart. Specifically, the DAS (Drive Authorisation System) is tied to the ECU, ignition key, and IRCL system. All that stuff has to be active on the recipient W124. I've not heard of anyone (yet) being able to bypass all the stuff. Now, you could run the later engine with standalone injection (Megasquirt or similar) but... why? Alphasud is correct, the 5.0L with LH-SFI would be the logical upgrade.

If you are on a tight budget, you could convert the 1997 motor to LH-SFI if the 95 engine has damage that isn't worth repairing. Basically you swap most of the top-end stuff (including distributor ignition and intake manifold) from the 95 to the 97 engine.

The 722.6 is a separate discussion, not easy or cheap, but doable with aftermarket TCU... but the ROI kinda sucks unless you plan to keep the E420 for a very long time.

I have a buddy who could do whatever programming might be necessary for an engine swap so that isn't a huge issue. I have to keep thinking on the car, it is too nice to take apart but could be a fun restomod of some sort

The electronics involved here is well beyond typical buddy programming. If your buddy hasn't worked with this exact setup before, specifically ME 1.0 and transferring DAS authorisation components into a pre-DAS chassis, plan on some hassles along the way.

Maybe. He has dug VERY deep into various cars with mods and has a guy in Moscow who is even more of a whiz that he works with. When the time comes we'll see!

Hi guys!

I can see you're interested in swapping a m119 from -97 w210 e420.
Just wanted to show my work on this engine, using original ME1.0 as completely standalone.
This engine are going into w108.
Link to my Youtube channel.
Enjoy:

So you used the ECU from the W210 E420 in the other car? What sort of programming of the ECU was involved?

This is the most Nordic car video I've ever seen
Out in the arctic circle doing an engine swap outside at night...
