A6. I sunk your Battleship.
Approaching dusk, I had to visit my sister who lives across the River on the other side of town. I drove the 500E. I took the long way to her house which bypasses town & includes my favorite stretch of autobahn.
I lazily turned right onto an unbroken straightaway leaving town which crosses the River over a long bridge whose far end arcs to the right prior to straightening out once again on the other side. Halfway down the straight, the speed limit changes from 30mph to 45mph. As I meandered along in both thought and movement, something caught my eye & captured my attention while entering the arc.
There’s those stupid blue headlights…Coming fast! Someone’s in a hurry getting out of work & must be venting their day’s frustrations. German car. Gotta be an Audi or Bimmer.
The feeling hits. Instinctively, I gradually increase my speed accordingly.
On the other side of the River, the road straightens out. At an upcoming traffic light I normally turn right & then right again onto the autobahn which then provides a straight-shot to my sister’s house off the next exit.
Running smooth as silk, I look down at my speedo. Instinctively avoiding an overtaking by the thundering “blue-light special”, I notice I’m going north of 70mph.
Here’s my turn-off coming up. Better start slowing down. The approaching traffic light is red. Wow! And here’s that blue-light…Audi? Is it? Having woven its way thru the back-markers, it has started to ride up my *ass and now makes its move to the passing lane in anticipation of the light turning green...
...I just don’t know about all this wavy LED marker-light business. Must be the new wave of auto design Zeitgeist we get to look forward to. Kinda irritating, but maybe I just haven’t given it the opportunity for an unbiased assessment.
I know Audis are very popular cars now…in the manner of BMW of the previous few decades…always pushing the passenger-car envelope with the technological incorporations of their highly successful race program. Fairly or not, I’ve always carried an Audi astigmatism. Every time while driving over in Europe, when I happened to discover the source of the heavy black acrid smoke filling the beautiful blue sky around the bend…it was an Audi whose engine compartment was fully engulfed in flames with driver & passengers standing helpless by the wayside. Forever left was an impression upon me…Where was I driving to again?
Green light! Straight!
I steadily accelerate. The Audi is creeping up along my rear quarter panel. I vaguely discern its misty gray silhouette, but those silly blue lights! Shootout! Tromp! My foot goes to the floor & the torque starts pulling. 90..100..110. We’re both moving right along & I’m pulling away by a car-length. Audi-person doesn’t like this at all! They obviously had to see the rear deck tri-star of the thought-to-be easily dispatched antiquated black W124.
Oh the sound of the engine after 120mph! I back off just a little, but Audi-person has no intent of doing the same & starts creeping back up again. After this long racing stretch, the 2 lanes we are running will narrow down into one lane before a final exit to either the parallel-running autobahn or elsewhere into the hinterlands.
Who wants it more??!
I re-bury my foot into the floor. The lights of business signs & passing traffic on the other side of the highway barrier blur & mimic multi-colored impressionistic time-exposures. I am now a full 2 to 3 car lengths ahead as the road narrows leading up to the final traffic light which is green. Here’s where we get off. I head straight thru the light and loop back onto the autobahn to go……oh yes, to my sister’s house! Audi-person turns right to continue on their journey.
Ooh, what a buzz! No meandering thoughts at all now. I’m completely electrified...
...And I still get to drive my favorite stretch of autobahn to my sister’s house!!
